Oakland Raiders 2013 Cap Trouble

With the [Oakland Raiders] currently in major team cap trouble heading toward the 2013 March 12 deadline, a few veteran contracts may be in the making for termination.

Tommy Kelly, DT

2013 Cap: $11,099,270

2013 Dead Figure (Pre June 1): $6,324,270

2013 Dead Figure (Post June 1): $2,108,090

Rolando McClain, LB

2013 Cap: $6,675,000

2013 Dead Figure (Pre June 1): $10,895,000

2013 Dead Figure (Post June 1): $3,631,666

[Darrius Heyward-Bay, WR]

2013 Cap: $10,601,000

2013 Dead Figure (Pre June 1): $5,260,000

2013 Dead Figure (Post June 1): $1,753,333

The Raiders need to make moves NOW in order to get under the estimated $121M bar due the 2nd week of March. However, you’ll see with some quick adding here that the Pre-June 1st savings to release this players is a mere: $5,896,000 – hardly worth the trouble. Post June 1st (when the dead money is split over 2013 and 2014), the savings soar to a total of $20,882,514.

Oakland will need to get more creative in the coming weeks to get themselves in stable position – and possibly retain or bring in new free agents to improve the roster. It’s not likely that a major improvement can be made this offseason, barring a steal in April’s draft. Realistically speaking 2013 is a “catch-up” year for this franchise that will need to get younger and cheaper fast in the major skill positions.

The Raiders are only 800k over the cap, not in terrible shape.

The New CBA has caused every team problems, not just ours. The new CBA did not cause us to pay mediocre players tons of money, but there is going to have to be a few years in which the market will have to adjust itself. Many teams have several good players becoming free agents and they are in no position to bring all of them back.

Heck the Ravens are flirting with releasing Anquan Boldin because they need to pay Flacco. I predict there will be alot of player movement for the next couple of years until the ridiculous contracts expire and there is a new market value for pro bowl caliber players. I guess the owners won.

March and June are always key months in football. I do know that you can carry the hit over 2 years, so that makes some degree of sense. I thought though that all signing bonus money and things of that nature had to be ironed out in March not June. Thats why the dead money would be so much greater before March than after, because you are accepting all liability for the bonus in one year, rather than splitting it over 2 and if you split it over 2, roster bonus money, accelarators and other things wouldn't apply at all. Also consider that DHB isnt under contract after this year and if they can split his contract that is also why the hit isnt as great from one year to the next.

I like Sportrac but some of their numbers are off and quite honestly nobody has the exact figures for every team other than the league office and the team in question.

The problem the Raiders ran into last year with all the dead money hits they took on was that in almost every case the players they cut had roster bonus money due to them in March. So if they waited till June to cut them they would be inheritating more dead money even while splitting it over 2 years. Plus you have to be under the cap by certain times throughout the year and they werent last year at this same point and time.
