Free Agency moves.

March 1, 2013 7:24 pm

Sorry guys tapped enter after I entered my subject.

We all know FA is in a few weeks from now.

I would like to get everyones insight on which way we think would benefit our team best when FA rolls around.

Who should we keep, cut and should pursue.

For me, it's easy to throw names out there, of both who we should keep, and sign. The problem is we do not know the financial aspect of what the players will settle for. There's reports that Hartline is commanding 6 million + per season, Wallace upwards of 12 million.

If these are true figures then signing either is foolish. So to sit here and make these decisions with only half the information is kind of pointless. Of course, as fans that's what we do. lol

I'd like them to keep as many of their own free agents as they want to keep. I am guessing Hartline, Smith, Starks, and Long are in that discussion.  The likelyhood of that happening are slim.

As far as bringing in free agents, any offensive skill position player they think will upgrade the offense is fine by me.  I would also expect the secondary to be addressed in some fashion. I don't believe looking for a pass rusher in free agency would be smart. It will either be too costly, or a player in decline, or both.

Some names to consider outside of receiver:

TE: Jared Cook, Fred Davis, and Martellus Bennett
RB: Steven Jackson (HA, but a decent short yardage runner, and would provide insurance)
OG: Andy Levitre
OT: Andre Smith, Sebastian Vollmer
DE: Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril
CB: Brent Grimes

Keep in mind I said consider, a lot of these guys could be over paid. I would not over pay for any of them. None of these guys are true impact players. Jackson was, but is clearly on the decline. I would like to see them target one of the TE's provided they do not plan on drafting one early.

Crack a beer, laugh at the money teams are wasting on free agents and then get back to the draft board and watching college tape?

That would be my prefered FA move. lol

Once the dust settles you can then survey the scene and cheery pick some vets that can serve as stop gaps (until you draft and develop long term solutions), and look for some younger guys that may have done little with their teams but could fit better in your system (providing at the least some roster depth).
The only area I've really "given in" on would be WR - Due to the talent available, and the need to surround Tannehill with talent, I would invest in a guy like Jennings or Bowe.
Also if they don't re-sign Smith CB is enough of a mess that it would get me to consider the options there as well.....You could wind up with a better player than Smith for the same amount, or less you would have paid him anyway, or go 2 for 1, bringing in a couple guys and hoping at least one proves their worth.

I don't have many specific names, because I wouldn't really be looking to target the big name guys.  (Again outside of Wr)
But that's just my philosophy.
Like FF4E was saying it's tough to say for sure without knowing the kinds of contracts these guys will get......So I'm not sure who those guys will be that you can wind up getting as potential starters for minimum financial risk.

^ I'm more and more starting to agree with that philosophy. I'd rather sit out this free agency, have a good draft, and have excellent cap flexibility for years to come.

I'd rather use this off-season as one to rebuild.

Teams have to use at least 89% of the cap. So they'll have to spend that money somewhere. What you don't want to see is them over paying veterans to lengthy contracts.

True they do have to spend much of the money.
Maybe Levitre is an option worth exploring, because of his age. I saw him mentioned in the first two posts.  I'm not familiar with his play, but if he fits the system and can anchor a Guard spot for the next 5 years he could be worth a contract in FA.

Within my philosophy, you could still spend the money, it's just how you choose to go about it.
I'll give a concrete example.  We all agree the team can use more of a pass rush and some depth on the DL, especially if they do lose McDaniels and also to protect themselves in case Vernon does not improve the way the team expects.
Maybe they will find help in the draft, maybe not.......so how do you address that in FA?
I would not throw big money at Johnson, Avril or Bennett.
Instead I would focus on the next group - Veterans that could still contribute (Umenyoria, Freeney, Abraham) and the second-tier guys that could contribute and possibly still improve within a new system (Idonije, Galette, Gilberry).
I'd rather bring in whoever you can get from that group on a short-term deal for reasonable money than making the big splash.

I can live with them saving some room under the cap as well, because theoretically if they do draft better they are going to need the cap room to resign quality drafted players.
The only reason we have all this cap room to begin with is because they have drafted awful.  Not just Ireland, but those that came before him.
The Ginn first round pick, the Beck second round pick.  Merling, Henne,Langford, Davis, now maybe even Long and Smith........They all represent high picks that should be the foundation of the team on or moving toward their second contracts, but they aren't around.
Which is why I prefer the short-term FA deals - You can supplement the roster and build a competitive team while still building through the draft.......and those contracts will be coming off the books when you have to resign guys like Jones, Miller, Pouncey and Tannehill who will hopefully prove worthy of sticking around (and hopefully the bulk of this years picks turn out to be quality guys as well).

Well said. Thats a solid opinion.

Lots of wasted money in the past on former 1st and 2nd rounders. Look at where that brought us? Big setback the past 7 years. This is why its gotten really frustrating to see this team fail year after year. I agree whe shouldnt go and spend like fools on quality players this upcoming FA, but we need to find a few proven players come FA. Like Rym said we need to go get Bowe or Jennings. Also upgrade at CB cause personaly I HATE Smith, hes just overated. Also Marshall is a waste of cap space this year. I would cut him and get Cox, Talib or even Rodgers Cromartie. Then go and draft a couple cb for the future.

My expectations this year are high due to the fact that we are in a good position to upgrade anywhere we wish to eighter threw FA or the draft.

Ive been big on Bowe for a long time and wish we could land him. Also have wanted them to pursue Cook. By adding theses 2 would change this teams enormously. Also you guys might not like this one cause it aint a sexy pick. With our 12th pick this year I would really want Warmack. He is arguably the best player at his position. He would solidify this line for years to come and also provide us with running lanes that we lacked last year.

Im enjoying what we all think and wish would happen this year.

Thanks for replying and wish to read some more opinions.

cheers. Go Fins.

I was just thinking...

What would you guys think if miami signed Bowe, re-sign Hartline then possibly drafting Austin at 12. And maybe getting Lattimore in the later rounds.

Wouldnt that be something.

Money talks, also im sure hes gonna wanna flirt with other teams to see the options they offer and also most importantly the foundation teams have.

KC has had some serious issues down there especialy with the suicide last year in the facility.

If that were me id want a change of scenary, we are all human here.

Not speaking has a fan here just being a realism, we have a solid shot at Bowe.

I think that was my post in January - The premise being, how you create an explosive offense in one off-season.
lol

Only I had Jennings instead of Bowe.  Though I really have nothing against Bowe, he may cost a little more (if available) but if you wanted to insert him there instead of Jennings, I'm fine with that.

You look at the better offenses and it is both quality and quantity at the skill positions, and the way to be explosive is by having players that create matchup problems.  That was the whole basis of my Austin argument - If you line up 4 wide with Bowe/Jennings, Hartline, Bess and Austin - Someone's matched up with a LB, S or 4th corner.  I don't think there's a team in the league that has 4 corners that can come in and stop that group.  Plus each one of those guys brings a little something different and can compliment one another.
It's my dream scenario because I think it would be exciting as hell......and it puts Tannehill in a position to succeed.

If you really wanted to go for broke and turn the biggest weakness we've had into a strength you can even try to trade back into the first for Eifert.  Or there's the possibility one of the 3 "E's" will be there in the 2nd and you can address TE as well.

I've also been pro-Lattimore......But as the months go on I'm not sure it's completely logical, or just wishful thinking on my part, because he was the most impressive back I saw in college since AP.  I'm not sure if he'll be close to the same player, or I just hate seeing someone so talented go down like that and it's just wishful thinking he'll make a triumphant return.
If Dr's do think he'll be close to 100% he would be a nice guy to have stashed away, when Thomas most likely confirms he's not the guy moving forward to pair with Miller.

Fitting in with the new system and being young, Glen Dorsey guys. Really think he can be an excellent 3-technique in the Phins' defense.

In 2012 he was +1.8 overall in just 115 snaps. That included +3.5 vs. the run and 2.1 vs. the pass with only one quarterback hurry.

In 2011, Dorsey was +17.7 against the run and -11.6 against the pass. In 2010, he was +16.4 vs. the run and -13.1 against the pass.

Seems like a solid defender against the run in both the 4-3 (2011), and 3-4 2012 until he got hurt. The question is would he be cheaper then Starks?

That's exactly the type of guy I was talking about.
You can bring guys like that in with very little risk.  If they watch the tape and see some upside or feel he'd excel in the 4-3, why not bring him in?  Assuming his lack of production isn't due to work ethic or being a head case.
I wouldn't expect him to live up to where he was drafted, but he was talented enough to be a top 5 pick coming out....Give him a change of scenery, let him compete, and even if he just provides depth with a bit of upside, it'll be worth it at the cost.  Anything more is a big win.

Since we're talking about second-tier DT's - Sammie Lee Hill may be the one that intrigues me the most.
From what I've read he's been a pretty good pass rusher (+5.6 this year rushing the passer on PFF) and he's only 26 years old....He hasn't had a ton of playing time, but that may be due to playing for the Lions and their deep DL more than anything else.
I like him as a buy low candidate, that has had time to develop and perform in a rotation, and that could shine if given a larger role entering the prime of his career.
