If Marino won a SB, best qb ever?

I seem to remember it as the latter, that simply put, his team around him was not so good.

That's funny. I remember Marino screwing up and then getting outrageously mad and yelling at all his teammates.

NFL, well I didn't say he was perfect in the playoffs lol, but seriously besides some pretty good receivers, what other help did he have either on offense or defense?

If Marino won a SB, best qb ever?

I say yes. Marino is already known as one of the best, in my view he was also the best pure passer the game has ever known, if he had won even one SB I think that would have been enough to even surpass Montana, your thoughts?
NO, the reason being is that a 38 year old Montana took the Chiefs to a 11-5 record and an AFC title game his first and only year there after missing a couple of years. The only other players that I can remember on that Chiefs team was an aging Marcus Allen, Derrick Thomas and an average J.J. Birden at wide reciever. I might be wrong here, but I do believe that was the last time the Chiefs won a playoff game. I'm not pokin fun at the Chiefs. Just using that piece to help me explain my opinion.

As great as Marino was, do I think that he would have been able to take that Chiefs team to the playoffs much less the AFC title game? No, I don't, especially at  38 years old either.

Personally, I don't remember one way or the other, but about a year or two ago, someone, I believe it was slashsnake posted quite a comprehensive piece on showing that Marino was not handicapped by his team in any way in comparison to other greats.

Honestly, I don't really remember too well either in his playoff games, well I can't really comment on that since didn't read that post, but seriously, besides some pretty good receivers, I can't think of any other real help he got either on offense or defense in all his years of playing.  If I am wrong, then I stand corrected but that is how I remember it.

But putting aside the hypothetical about him winning a SB or SB's, if I ranked my top ten qbs of all time, would probably put him around 7th or so.

In terms of the person comparing Favre to Marino, I disagree, in my opinion, the reason why Favre leads the league in so many stats is the fact that he played so long.  That may also explain why he holds the most ints ever.

Finally though, wanted to mention that I really do believe focusing mainly on rings shouldnt be the situation.  For example, I think Aikman was a very good qb, however, I would never rank him as a top ten of all time even though he is 3-0 in SBs.  The guy had a hall of game running back, hall of fame wr, great tight end and one of the greatest offensive lines ever, in addition, had a good defense.  In my humble opinion, if Marino had that, he could have won 5 plus SBs.    Yet, we view Aikman as being clutch because he is 3-0 in SBs.

But Hell, winning a SB seemed to transform some podunk mediocre rube QB into an Elite QB in the feeble minds of some of the most idiotic people. But that's the Eli Manning  Ben rapistburger story, and we are supposed to be focusing on Dan the Man... fixed it

And I remember Marino buying his guys Isotoner gloves for Christmas, lol.  But that was just a commercial.

There are a lot of QB's I would take ahead of Dan Marino, so, no, that means he's not the best QB ever.  If OP wants to say that Dan Marino would be better than, say, Tom Brady if Dan had only won a Super Bowl, then so be it, but he isn't the best ever, lol.

Well Super, I am not disagreeing with you, for me, the reality is I have Montana as most do as #1 ever.  But is a nice hypothetical to imagine if Marino did win a SB or a couple where he would rank.

Joe Montana  said Brady is the best   but I have him at #2  and Joe at no#1   Brady has better stats in every category  except the most important  SB's  4-0  and no picks    Joe Cool  the best

Just to be clear, I wasn't making a statement there.  I'm just clarifying that, by saying Marino would be best ever if he won one Super Bowl, you must therefore be saying Marino is better than everyone else, including Tom Brady, by winning the one Super Bowl.

Yes, it's a changing of eras which prevents it from being an apples-to-apples comparison.  If Brady had played in these guys' era for example, we know for sure he'd have one less Super Bowl (because the Tuck Rule did not exist).

NFL, again am not necessarily disagreeing with you, but a player is awarded a good prize such as the MVP for that year, yes, it is not the same as the Super bowl ring but having great stats in a year can win the MVP in a given year.
The MVP has been a beauty contest for seasons now, and often doesn't go to the most deserving, but to the media darling of that season.

As for Bradshaw and Marino, Bradshaw played some of his best games when his team was in the playoffs, Marino never really seemed to be capable of getting up for that challenge.  It doesn't mean Bradshaw was a better QB, but it is another piece of data to throw into the mix.

So Marino at 1-1 (and at 2 INTs assuming he didn't throw any in the hypothetical win) would be better than Joe at 4-0 and no INTs?

I wasn't claiming that as an overall, Pin, but if someone refuses to realize than Bradshaw was better than Marino in the post season, then they are a hater or have mental issues.

Marino played in an era where a DB could mug a receiver all the way down the field instead of a 5 yard cushion.  Hard to compare with today's hands-off policy.  Same for Jim Brown.  He weighed in at 230 lbs of muscle, which is more than most LB's and some DE's.  Based on Marino's quick release, his innate ability to read defenses quickly, and his amazing accuracy, I would rate him as the best, or at least in the top 3.  How would today's QB's perform if they had played when Marino did. where receivers were harrassed throughout the route?

Gotcha Joe  and thanks for the clarification.  Now in my opinion is that a no ring Marino is better than a 1 ring Favre, but not better than a 1 ring Peyton.  Good argument would be if Marino won 1 SB  would he be better than Peyton or not? Guess  matter of opinion

No, that's Joe Montana. To be the best ever he'd have to have won 4.

So, what about Bart Starr... the QB that lead his team to 5 NFL championships in 7 years?
