True story.  My best friend is a teacher.  Took him 7 years to get his degree because he tried a business degree and flunked out.  He loves snow days.  Never would even think about going.  I told him since I'm already paying him, he should shovel my driveway.

Anyway, when I finally earned my 5th week of vacation, I was excited.  He told me if he had 5 weeks of vacation a year, he'd kill himself.

Typical teacher.

I'm saying that it is the system's fault because at a certain point students are not allowed to be held back.

And just were did you hear this story?

I experienced it personally as a teacher.  I would give students an F, but they would get passed on anyways.  Teachers don't have any control over who moves on to the next grade and who doesn't.

But when those poor students get good grades and are passed along to the next grade, even when they didn't pass the class, then that's the lazy teacher's fault.

WrongAgain, in many states, you can not hold a student back unless you have the parents consent

Let me see if I can help you, since you obviously need the little bus.  I do not work in New York.  I have never been to New York.  Since you seem to come from the west, why are there so many idiots in Colorado?  At least you have personal experience there to base an answer on.

But, as other more intelligent posters have tried to tell you, when schools fail, the problem usually starts at home and spreads through the entire community, including teachers, administrators, and the local school boards.  Did you ever read the Joe Clark story?  Perhaps you should.

I see you are unfamiliar with the practice of "social promotion."  There's even a wikipedia page for your viewing pleasure:

Let me see if I have this straight.

You have a lazy friend.  That friend is a teacher.  Therefore, all teachers must be lazy.  That was a very in-depth study you did there, little fella.  Hope you did not take too much time from your quality time with Mom doing all that research.  If you hate snow days so much, why not move to Los Angeles?  Sounds like you would fit right in.

So?  I'm not attacking you personally.  I'm attacking teachers in general.  Just because you go to school when it snows doesn't mean our education problems are solved.

Since you seem to come from the west, why are there so many idiots in Colorado?
The public school system and poor teachers.

Did you ever read the Joe Clark story?
Joe Clark was a good teacher, who cared about his students and actually taught them and kept them from failing.  He was one in a million.  Most teachers don't give a shit****.  And you know it.

I didn't say all.  I said most.  Maybe you're one of those who got a poor public education...

Nathan,

You and others have it exactly right.  Teachers who fail too many students get called into the office, and told to find "a way" to get these kids to pass.  Once a kid learns that he does not have to work to do work, they will not.  I had my very first principal give me one of these "heart to heart" talks.  And, those of us who simply cannot give even a D to a moron like the masterbater, have found that a 69.5, while an F, rounds up to a D-.  He probably earned lots of those.

In many states, you can hold a student back.  However, states that pass students even if they fail is ANOTHER problem with our educational system.

If I was a principal, I'd wonder what these teachers were doing wrong also.  Why aren't they teaching the kids?  Too many snow days?  Not enough planning?  Did they themselves not get the proper education?

Again with the staggering ignorance.

Joe Clark, who was at one time a teacher, gained his fame from being a Principal.  One who was willing to buck the school board, the parents, and Yes, the union.  Look it up, rather than trying to sound intelligent about the man.  You can not camouflage ignorance with rhetoric, which you have proven time and time again.

You are providing a perfect example of why we cannot teach many kids.  Some morons simply refuse to learn.

Too bad there aren't more like him.  Most just fall in line and take their pay check.  One of the problems with our educational system.  Most teachers became teachers because it was the easiest education to get, and had the most vacation time.

It's a job to them, not a career.

Our teacher friend gave us the perfect example.  Joe Clark.  Those kids didn't want to learn or care to learn.  But he taught them anyway.
