Boldin Just Got Traded

March 11, 2013 4:24 pm

It is being reported that Boldin was just traded to the 49ers for a 6th round pick. The deal is contingent on boldin passing a physical.

It's a shame. Would have liked to see some sort of cap friendly extention get done, but I can't hate either side for it. Loved Boldin while he was here and if the Ravens were going to have to cut him anyway, I'm glad they were able to get something for him, albeit not much.

A little surprised about that move, I think he was a huge part of your SB run last year, and thought him and Flacco had good chemistry together but at least you guys were smart and got something for him.

Good move for the Ravens. Boldin was a goner anyway you cut it so they should be happy they got something for him.

Boldin Just Got Traded

I know Ozzie is a master at evaluating talent and can bet that he has something up his sleeve but it is a shame to see Q go. He was so instrumental during the playoffs and a little bit of me says we kicked him to the curb with little or no respect. I hope he does well in SF as he was a true great guy.....but it sure does free up some more much needed cap space.

His cap hit was projected to be $7,500,000....that is a big hit and puts us near $20,000,000 under the cap now. Something is up and I am dying to know what Ozzie has in mind.

6th round pick for Boldin.  Pure cash cut move and was well needed if the Ravens were going to retain Ellerbe.

This means that Jacoby Jones and Tandon Doss have to step up.

If you lookk at all the rumor mill articles Cleveland is trying to take every free agent we have ala Rex Ryan. They are going after Kruger and Ellerbe. Cary William's agent is reporting they are fielding offers from numerous teams. how true all these are is for everyone to determine on their own.

Jacoby will definately have to step up but Doss.....I am definately not sold on him so far. He drops more balls than Mike Wallace.

I thought he was worth more than a 6th, but we gave up a 4th for him 3 seasons ago so I guess his Kelly Bluebook value depreciates that much.  I guess Randy Moss will be history next.

I'm seeing a lot of talk about Doss and Jones stepping up.  Really it's Doss because you ant JJ speeding down field and not making physical grabs over the middle.  That's Pitta teritory now if not Doss (who I'm not high on at the moment).  With 12 picks now they will have good options to address need in the draft (not usually Ozzie's style) or they can trade up even multiple times to get who they want.  They can use also picks to trade for affordable plug and play players.

Fans have slammed Doss for that one game.  He's had all of three total drops in his two year career and 2 of them were in the same game.  That game just happened to be a playoff game.

I'll assume everyone has already forgotten Boldin's wide open drop in the superbowl or his TD drop in the 2010 Steelers game?  Or Torrey's many many drops in his history?  Or the many drops Rice has actually had that nobody ever mentions.

Prior to the playoffs, everyone was talking about how Doss had some of the best hands on the team.  He's made some great catches in limited time folks.  Let's give the young guy a chance.  Remember, Torrey was gonna be run out of town in preseason also.

Thank you RR1.  I was going to post the same.

As much as I hate to see Boldin go, I'm glad the Ravens traded him to another contender.  The 6th rd pick isn't so bad whe you have Ozzie and Ernie drafting.  Their 6th rd picks are usually turn out better than most team's 4th rd picks.

Don't understand this move, player talent wise I would trade Ellerbe for Boldin in a heartbeat. At 7 mil, Boldin was overpaid...but that still won't justify us overpaying Ellerbe (if we do). We have cap room now, but we don't have a true #1 WR. But you can look at it another way, Flacco is the highest paid player in NFL history. Earn your paycheck, you can't complain about what you have or don't have now. We see elite QBs play better than Flacco with no receivers. Its now Flacco's job to turn Torrey Smith into a pro bowler just like Manning, Brees, Brady, Rodgers, did with their once no name guys.

I would've liked to see Boldin released and get a chance to sign where he wanted. But correct me if im wrong, i think we save more money by trading and not cutting him. 49ers are getting a steal. Guys like Mason, Boldin arent guys who make plays based on their speed, so they have longer lifespans, i think if the 49ers re-sign him they have a solid WR for maybe 3 more years.

Tandon Doss doesn't have anymore potential than a guy like Deonte Thompson imo. I think we will need to make a draft pick in the first 3 rounds at WR.

Granted Doss has not got the playing time this year and I'll give him that, but the spotlight may be on him and I know it is not fair to have to replace a guy like Boldin but it's all part of the game.

I still think that Ozzie has something up his sleeve.

That's the popular opinion right now, just like Torrey was as preason bust.  Just how we wouldn't go anywhere without Mason and Heap.  Just like the entire team was in trouble with Suggs having a torn achilles while Redding and Johnson were gone from the team and the offense couldn't make up the difference.  I could keep going from just over the last three years

Coincidentally, a lot of popular opinions don't play out as facts.

3 drops...and only caught 7. Let's not lose perspective, he's done nothing on the field.

Correct, he was due 6 mil but contract hit was 7+, we would have only saved the 6 and carried the remainder in dead cap space if I understand it correctly.

Caught 8.  One in the playoffs too Tongue out.

Ok seriously folks, the Ravens clearly had no intention of keeping Boldin past 2013, evident by the fact the asked him to take a pay cut intend of doing a cheap extension.  So I ask, would you guys have rather they just cut boldin and caried over a 1.5M or so dead cap hit while getting nothing for him?  Those are the only two options.

This really is Mason/Heap all over again in terms of reactions.  I'll say it again, an inexperienced "supposed bust" named Torrey Smith dropped everything thrown his way then got full time action and we all know how that turned out.

I am totally fine with them making this move. The Ravens have some promising young players on the roster in Doss, LaQuan Williams, Thompson and Streeter that will eventually need to be moved up and have the opportunity to show what they have to offer.

7 mil cap hit for a 32 yr old receiver who has nearly 10 years of wear and tear on his body was too much and rightfully so. The Ravens have to spend their cap cash wisely to keep a competitive team on the field and having to use young cheap players is the main way to keep a team rolling with the changes.

If we couldn't extend him, I agree with the move. Doesn't mean I'm happy about it. Yell

I think you're talking about starting Doss, and if that's the case I don't think he walks in as your #2, he may earn it in camp, but he will be challenged and he will not be the favorite to win the job. I expect Jones (if his ass isn't cut for spending 3 months dancing with Karina Smirnoff w/e her face is) to be the favorite unless we sign a talented free agent wideout or draft one early (like 1st round)

*put on evil hat* What if we signed Wallace? Joe could do some serious damage with that deep ball, but I would bet quite a bit his character concerns make him untouchable.
