I attended the game game today in Lakeland...I was very impressed with Matt. He is a big guy who hits the ball hard. He had a homer and a nice double.

He looks like a ball player. Definitely a guy who could be of value to the Tigers if Prince Fielder or Victor Martinez were to miss any significant time. Atleast I assume he can start out in Toledo. I don't actually know his background much.

The game I attended Matt Tuiasosopo played 3B (Cabrera was in WBC) and did a fine job going 2 -3. Looks like a good get er done player who can fill in if needed down the road. I believe he was a rule 5 player so he needs to be on the roster to keep him on the team.

Tuiasosopo is not a Rule 5 pick. In camp on a minor league contract and an invite. He will get assigned to Toledo, is my guess.

Matt is basically in competition for the last roster spot with Don Kelly. he has played both corner OF and corner IF spot in the minors. neither are on the 40 man and with the lack of need for late inning defense (no Boesch/raburn) he has just a good of a shot as DK.

It's crazy that he's also played middle infield. He doesn't appear the type. But if he makes it over DK, even I, his proudest fan, won't be that upset about it. Then again, his numbers aren't that great in the majors or the minors. So maybe keeping Donnie Boy around, based off his near HOF #s, wouldn't be that bad either.

If this gig doesn't work out for him the Lions could always use another back-up QB.

I guess this means as much as DD made the deal for Kobernus JL loves Don Kelly. So we may see DK unless by some miracle Tuiasosopo makes the team over DK.

With Avisail Garcia going to the DL and Boesch outta here, the Tigers have just four outfielders coming north for sure: A-jax, Hunter, Dirks and Berry.  Given that Donny K can play both IF and OF, I think he has a realistic shot to be on the MLB roster.

OOPS ... Day late and a dollar short:

LAKELAND, Fla. -- [Rick Porcello] has earned the No. 5 starter's job in the [Detroit Tigers'] rotation, and [Drew Smyly] will start the season in the bullpen.

Porcello was 10-12 with a 4.59 ERA in 31 starts for the AL champions last season, when Smyly went 4-3 with a 3.99 ERA in 18 starts as a rookie. Porcello is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in six [spring training] appearances; Smyly is 4-0 with a 3.38 ERA.

Detroit also said Tuesday that utilityman [Matt Tuiasosopo] will be on the opening-day roster. Signed to a minor league contract in November, he is batting .327 with six doubles during [spring training].

Tuiasosopo has .247 avg and .392 slg in AAA and AA, in more than 2300 AB's over 7 years.  Much of this was done in two of the best hitters leagues around, the Pacific Coast League and Texas League.  It's a nice story that he's coming north, but a leopard doesn't change his spots.  Reality should hit very soon.

Marques, who is Matt's brother.  Their dad is Manu, a d-linemen that played at UCLA in late 1970's then many years in the NFL.

Tuiasosopo signed a professional baseball contract after graduating from Woodinville High School. Although he chose baseball, Tuiasosopo had a promising high school football career. He was selected to play in the 2004 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Before signing as a professional baseball player, he signed a letter of intent to play football at the University of Washington.

Matt was a highly touted high school option QB (like his bro) but chose baseball. I'm sure he can still throw the pigskin just fine unless he developed a case of Drew Henson (which is possible).

A six pack of my wife's Summer Shandy says he could beat out Kellen Moore if given the opportunity (notice how I don't bet my own beer) Surprised
