The Beer Cart League

March 9, 2009 7:30 am

Mich, I am sending a message to CBS admins to appeal the use of your avatar.  And I am not so sure the phot should have been allowed, but that's a different matter.

I hope you were watching the 'heels beat the Tar out of Duke yesterday and once again winning the ACC regular season title and securing what has to be a number one seed in the NCAA tournament.

If not, I have it recorded and can send you a copy.  Seriously.

At least you like the Steelers, so you have that going for you.  Which is nice.   Wink

The CBS admins must have had an awful lot of time on their hands to be able to review every avatar from every user, as well as all the other posts they have to review and complaints they deal with.

And now we are going to get Troll Buttons and who know what else that most of us won't use properly.  I hope they are happy with the results of their changes and did it for a postive reason and not just to justify their time.

Tiger is back this week on a "regular" tour event.  It will be interesting to see how he does.

I survived - just barely. It appears that my absence didn't help my golf lineup any. I'm pretty consistently mediocre this year. However, it looks like Sportsline was kind enough to give me a shiny new troll button. Jimbo, Prev, Assure, Ace, and anyone else procrastinating, just a friendly reminder, I'm really itching to use my new toy so don't provoke me. Not signing-up for March Madness Bracket Challenge will be considered trollish behavior. March 15 is selection Sunday so get to it.

The Beer Cart League

March 10, 2009 3:22 am

This post is mostly for Jimbo but anyone interested in losing may also take advantage.

It seems to me that the most important aspect of any major fantasy sports is the timely use of waivers/free agents. This seems particularly true for hockey, basketball, and baseball where teams play several times a week and the seasons are long. There is a greater chance for hot/cold streaks as well as injuries. I know it seems like I'm stating the obvious but I think playing the waiver/FA game is more important than the draft or implementing a hitting vs. pitching strategy (although this has changed slightly with the new scoring system - I'll say more about this later). Last season, majority of the players that contributed to my winning came via the FA route. In fact, everyone from the original draft excluding the undroppable players got replaced at some point and even the undroppable players were replaced via the trade so I ended up with only 2 or 3 drafted players. So other than your 1st and 2nd round picks, the rest of the draft doesn't seem nearly as important as paying attention to the waiver/FA - of course, if everyone did that then you might make out like a bandit in the draft.

Last year, I would give a bit of edge to pitching because good RP (relief pitchers) were just as valuable as good SP (starting pitchers) and it seemed that the teams in our league with the pitching consistently won more H2H against teams with hitting. A good example is one of the teams in our league played the "2-start" pitcher strategy (use the FA to fill the pitching roster with two start pitchers for the week) and he regularly outscored the other teams by a bunch - just didn't quite work in the playoffs.

The year the scoring changes for batting has changed but only minor changes. The pitching has changed significantly - Win 7 points vs 10 points, Save 5 points vs 10 points, and shutouts 5 points vs 10 points (I think, not 100% on the shutout). Anyway, you can see that saves by RPs are half of what it was last year so it will be a little more balanced in pitching vs batting or even slightly favored for batting. Point being that draft strategy may change some, especially RP and waiver/FA may play even a bigger role than last year.

Jimbo, I hope I didn't confuse you with all that. I'll try to add more but that seems like enough for you do digest for now.

Nads, thanks much for taking the time to give me a few tips.  As i stated, i know nothing about MLB and even less about fbb.  I don't even have anyone around me that has played it so I am a complete dunce when it comes to strategy.

Back to what i really know, golf.  That is, at least with fantasy golf, I know how poor my choices are.  My poor choices for this week, just to give everyone a heads up, Tiger, Ogilvy, O'Hair, Clark and YE Yang.

At least that's what they are currently.  The first segment ends this week and in our money pool at work, I am only 8,000 points behind the leader for the $100 prize.  We are both about 600,000 ahead of the next highest player, so it's almost a two man race at this point.  Wish me luck.

that's scary....we'll both sink to the bottom or rise to the top. my choices are exactly the same, except i have johnson instead of clark.

Nads, I hope to get in the bracket pickem ,but it will depend on if CBS gets the brackets up soon enough forme to make picks. I know how much CBS frowns on players not participating or not making picks. I am going on vacation later next. I will be going to Bristol ( less than 2 hours from my house) to see the Nascar race. We'll be there for several days camping so I'll see the Nationwide race and the Cup race. I just hope we can get some dry weather by then. They are predicting rain at least through Tuesday. I'm ready for racin' the way it ought to be.

You might be a troll if:
You have difficulty getting up from a prone position.
Tourists want to take a picture of you.
Your head outweighs the rest of your body.
Turtlenecks cover your face.
You have to put your shirts on feet first.
Your pubes are naturally pink, green, or purple.
You are only 2 feet tall but you still meet the height requirements for rides.
You have difficulty shopping for hats and helmets.
You frequently get mistaken for a mascot.

You might be a Sportsline troll if:
You have more SIDs than you can count on one hand.
You've had more than one 90-days timeout.
You've used the word "troll" more than once in a sentence or more than three times in a paragraph.
1 is the highest score you've ever given for any post other than your own.
You regularly carry on a conversation with yourself.
You can switch SIDs within 10 seconds.
You've used the words "your mother" or "your sister" while chatting with a total stranger.
You know what the word "outsider" means.
You regularly get negative scores.
You frequently use symbols to communicate.
You frequently use font sizes taller than yourself.
Ruining reputations and getting people banned is more enjoyable than winning in fantasy sports.
Your av has been deleted.
You've directly attacked a member (eg called someone dumb).
Someone has used "The Button" on you.

Ok, time for the next installment of fbb for dummies.  Each team will draft 21 players with up to 16 players active each week. You are allowed 1 catcher, 1 first baseman, 1 second baseman, 1 third baseman, 1 shortstop, 3 outfielders, 1 utility, 5 starting pitchers and 2 relief pitchers on your active lineup. Last year you could start any combination of SPs and RPs but this year you are restricted to max of 2 RPs so you'll need to draft pitchers accordingly (ie don't load up on RPs unless you plan to trade them before first lineup is due). BTW a utility player is essentially any non-pitcher or a wildcard player. So you'll likely fill this spot with your best hitter from your bench who isn't already active.

Something else to consider during the draft and FA is picking up players who are eligible for multiple positions. It allows for lot more flexibility in managing your roster (ie filling a position while one of your key players is mending from injury). (note: a player who is eligible for multiple positions will earn points regardless of what position they currently play or what position you have them slotted for as long as you start them - eg a 1B who is also eligible for SS, 2B, 3B will earn points regardless of what position you have them on your active roster as long as it's one of the eligible positions thus 1B, SS, 2B, or 3B)

You might have too much time on your hands if:

You can write lengthy (but funny) posts about trolls.

Ditto for CBS trolls.  (But again, still funny)

You can take the time to teach dummies how to play fantasy _ase_all.  (And I do mean dummies, so thanks for that).

Speaking of golf, where the heck did Mickelson come from yesterday?  He went crazy on his second 9 holes.  Looks like McLovin is headed for the oven again.

I agree with that Fantasy guy.  I thought it was clean but we should let the officials decide.  Oh wait, they already did.

Way to go, 'heels.

Mich, of course there was contact but it really did look legal to me.

Of course there is a possibility that I am biased.

On a completely different subject, I am really not looking forward to about five days of rain here in Charlotte.

Well Mich, I watched UNC lose to Florida State yesterday.  And it is indeed raining, raining, raining here, so the world looks kinda bleek at the moment.

Fortunately, the rain will stop (eventually) and the 'heels will be a number one seed in the NCAA tournament, so I have something to look forward to.

Hope you are still high and dry in Myrtle.
