Lucky for them they can still get hot at the end of the season and make the tournament.  What a novel concept!

NIT at best. Leon Rice is doing a pretty good job with this young team though.

True Steely, Boise State is not that deep and they seem to be going through a whole bunch of injury problems.  They could still turn it on just before tournament time IF they can get healthy and gain some team chemistry.  They are still a pretty good team when they can get it all together.

I think the NIT would be a disappointment after the start they had, but I've always been a NCAA tourney or "yawn, who cares" type of basketball fan.

Interestingly, Palm still has BSU projected in as a 10 seed. I guess that makes sense given you have some good wins this year despite the bad losses. Good wins vs Creighton and Wyoming is offsetting the bad losses vs Utah and Nevada. To BYU's detriment with have 0 good wins this year. We don't have any bad losses (worse is FloridaSt who aren't that bad), but we just don't have any good wins at all to offset that. So I think unless we can manage to knock off Gonzaga and St Marys and Utah St, we're NIT bound. You guys on the other hand still have a definite. With 2 good wins already wins, and another couple of solid wins against NMU, Colorado St, Wyoming, UNLV, or SDSU and BSU probably should go dancing. Good luck to your team. Haven't really followed them close enough to know anything about your injury situation.

Cut that a little short. Make that "You guys on the other hand still have a definite shot."

and looking at you guy's schedule, your last 11 games are pretty brutal. I only see 2 relatively easy games - @FresnoSt and Nevada at home. I'd pick BSU over Air Force but they could punk you the same way Nevada did, AFA is better than Nevada. Those other 8 games though, wow - tough schedule. If you guys come out the other end of that schedule with less than 6 losses I'll be impressed.

With all the flack you guys get for SOS in football, at least nobody can rightfully harrass you about your BBall SOS the rest of this season. That's one tough schedule.

Here's some numbers that puts your remaining schedule into perspective:

BSU's best win so far: Creighton - RPI 30

Remaining games on your schedule:
2 games - ColoradoSt - RPI 22
2 games - UNLV - RPI 17
2 games - SDSU - RPI 29
1 game - Wyoming - RPI 54
1 game - UNM - RPI 7

That should give you a little perspective re: how tough your remaining schedule is.

Boise's SOS happens to be last in the conference at the moment at 123 in the RPI.  Here's the link:

New Mexico is at 5 and UNLV at 22.  The closest to Boise is Wyoming at 105.  As a conference the MWC is rated #2 overall behind the Big 10 and ahead of the Big East and ACC which still trips me out!

B4L, I guess I should have been more specific. SOS really isn't used in bball. Being a football fan, I understand why you'd focus on SOS. I probably should have said RPI, it's a much more used metric in college hoops than SOS is. It's part SOS, but it's also who you beat, who you lost to. A team could have a very high SOS but a very low RPI, and a team could have a very high RPI but have a very low SOS. We go more by RPI in bball than sos.

Say for example team A plays 11 games against top-50 RPI opponents and team B plays against 3 top-50 RPI opponents. That's going to give team A a much higher SOS. But if team A goes 1-10 versus those opponents, and team B goes 2-1, that's going to give team B a higher RPI. Really is logical if you think about.

So that's why we put more weight on RPI than we do SOS in hoops.

I stand by my comment that looking at your remaining 10 games (11 in my original post - now that you got beat by CSU, make it 10) - you compare the RPI of the teams you have left on your schedule and it's actually tougher than Duke's remaining schedule, as an example.  That's why made the comment about how nobody can give you an flack - about your "remaining" schedule. BSU is just now starting to hit the meat of their conference schedule.

Compare how many top-30 RPI teams you have left on your schedule versus how many Duke has in their remaining games. That's why I say your remaining schedule is tough. On the bright side, BSU still gets UNLV, Wyoming, CSU, and SDSU at home. I still think if BSU can win 3 of those games they're going dancing this year.

Also consider that in Div1 college hoops, we're talking 347 teams, not the 124 or whatever in CFB. So out of 347 teams, if you're top 60 or so in your RPI ranking you're pretty damned good compared to the rest of the field.

Good points Steely.  Also we have to realize BB is not like FB in that all it takes is for a team to get hot going into the Conference Tournament and all the sudden you are in the NCAA field.  I think there is still that possibility with this team.  Of course if they continue to be plagued by injury they may never get back that team chemistry going into the tournament.

It is hard for me to give up on them yet, even though this current losing streak is tough to watch.

I haven't been able to find any detail about the team's injuries (not on the BSU athletics site), and your games are rarely broadcast where I'm at. But looking over your stats, I'm guessing the injury was Elloriaga? He's a solid 11-pt avg player and looks like he was out your last couple of games. Now he's back and you guys pulled off a nice win.

I think health is definetely going to be your key, your front 5 are producing very nicely, but statistically it doesn't look like your bench is really able to contribute much. So yeah, if your starters can stay healthy, this is definetely a team (as already proven) that's capable of beating some real good teams. BTW, I think your guy Marks is clutch and is going to be a big part of your future.

Nice win.

You're not alone steely. With the demise of the Mountain West channel it's awfully tough to catch them. I live in Phoenix now and the only two games that I've gotten is Michigan State and Utah. I'm in Vegas right now and threw down on UNLV minus 3.5. When I placed the bet the gal noticed my Boise State shirt and said, "really. You're going to bet against your team?" The result serves me right.

Yes, Elloriaga has been out with a concussion.  It was certainly good to have him back.  B4L, I can't say I thought they were going to pull it off even at home.  They held on for the win though and I'm sure it was money well spent!
