Rest In Peace DGNR8

July 17, 2010 7:38 pm
When I first saw the title of this thread I actually thought it was going to be some kind of joke that he had gotten himself banned from the community or that this was just some kind of prank.  To my utter shock, dismay, and now genuine sorrow I wish that it were.  I didn't know DG nearly as well or nearly as long as some of the rest of you, but I genuinely enjoyed interacting with him, busting each other's chops, and even trading a few private messages pertaining to the Ben Roethlisberger stuff and the fact that I referenced his name in my diss verse against Big Ben.

I ended up taking the line out later for recording purposes since nobody outside of the board would get the joke, but now I'm going to add it back in honor of his memory and his contributions here.

My heart goes out to his friends, family, and everyone close to him who was impacted by this terrible tragedy, especially his two young sons.  RIP Ryan.  You'll be missed by all of us here on CBS who knew you.

Fellow Steelers fans, Browns fans, and everybody else who knew Ryan/DG:

While I will certainly be respectful of any privacy that this situation merits and mean absolutely no offense by asking: how did this happen?  If it is something private, you can tell me in a private message but I of course will be very understanding and respectful if details are not to be disclosed.

Also, as an act of kindness and since he was a single father of two young sons, is there anything that any of us here can do?  Has anyone given some consideration to starting some kind of fund in his honor for helping his sons?  What can CBS do?

I apologize if any of that sounds unreasonable or far fetched.  I mean no offense.

Has anyone given some consideration to starting some kind of fund in his honor for helping his sons?  What can CBS do? As lyman said on the other thread...the wheels are already in motion.  When we have more info, it'll be passed along.

While I will certainly be respectful of any privacy that this situation merits and mean absolutely no offense by asking: how did this happen? GoS...no offense taken.  The details remain sketchy at best.  At this point, any details I have are from a third party and therefore, with all due respect, will remain with me.

Thanks for your post.  It was thoughtful and touching.

As an aside.  I'd like to encourage people to use this thread, and the one on the Browns board, to not just express their condolences and sadness over Ryan's passing, but to celebrate his time here!  Let's post some of things we remember most about Ryan and what he brought to this community.

His sense of humor could rub some people the wrong way, but the man had impecible timing!  He was never without a whitty comment or one liner.  I'll never forget the endless Python quotes, or his merciless debating.  What does everyone else remember?

Good for you Mano and that was an awesome suggestion.  When my grandmother was dying, she had requested that we all throw a party in her honor rather than your typical funeral situation.

I said it in the thread on the Browns board but in regards to Ryan as a person: he was consistently in contact with CBS admins to improve this website and some of its policies for the benefit of everybody who posted here.  As some of you may know, he was a strong advocate towards changing the "cap" that had been put on all of us limiting our ability to add any additional people to our favorites list.  In a thread where this was being discussed, Ryan even went so far as to APOLOGIZE to me that he couldn't add me to his favorites list because of the cap but complimented me on my posts and on our interactions.  That right there alone is testament to the fact that he was a genuinely good person who was unselfish and considerate of others.

Ryan and I had some of our first interactions in the Mel Kiper sucks thread where, incidentally for you Mano, he and I started that whole thing about how you "liked Cox Surprised".  Even though I was the "instigator" it was nevertheless what got me interacting with Ryan on a fairly regular basis.  He really enjoyed you Mano, so even though I don't know you all that well, he was very honest that sometimes he would post here just to bust your ballz on something.  I also remember when he and Gidion were trading barbs in regards to the whole Ben Roethlisberger incident and I had posted that poll for our Steelers fans to vote on who I should write my next diss verse against.  Initially, Ben was in the lead by a substantial margin, and then the poll was allegedly tampered with so that 100+ votes were cast for me to write the verse against DG instead of Ben.  This was when he and I started to get to know each other better through trading private messages and I'm grateful to still have all of those interactions.

All of us who knew Ryan, particularly those of you who knew him longer and far better than I did, know that he was a witty guy who, like his unforgettable avatar, enjoyed taking a "poop" on the Steelers every chance he got.  Sure, not everybody was fond of what he had to say, but for those of us who were fortunate enough to get to know him better we all knew and understood that it was nothing more than banter.  In our final PM conversation, do you know what he told me?

"Go ahead and make the diss verse against me because it would be funny and I could use a good laugh".

And that was Ryan in a nutshell everybody.

Our Father,
Lord that are't in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day,
Our dailey bread,
and forgive us of our tresspasses,
as we forgive those who tresspass against us.

Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

Thine is the KiKingdom,
The power and the glory,
Forever and forever Amen.

The Lord is my Shepard,
I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green patures,
He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul,
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his names sake.
Yea though I walk through the valie of death,
I will fear no evil.
For thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

He prepare a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.
He annointeth my head with oil.
My cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the lord forever.
Amen.
Amen.

Like GoS, when reading the headline I thought he got kicked off of CBS or something like that, then I started to read all of your posts I knew it was something far more serious than that.

I never really knew DGNR8, but I could tell how passionate he was in support for the Browns, or when ever he debated on another matter like Big Ben.  I guy that passionate about something like sports had to be as passionate in his approach to life.  When you hear of someone as young as he was passing away, you often tell yourself that life is just too short and that you should live your life to the fullest and never take it for granted.

My condolences go out to his family and friends.

When I heard he left behind 2 sons, I got very emotional, I don't know what it is but whenever I hear, or read of something like this happening, my thoughts often wander into their shoes, being a father of a 21 month year old little girl, it makes me ask myself......I hope I'm being the best father, friend and role-model that I can be for her.

"Tis not just a Scratch"
Scratches heal and go away.
DGNR8 is more like a scar.
Scars are memories that are never forgotten.

You'll be forever remembered.

I hope I'm being the best father, friend and role-model that I can be for her.  Wanting it is 7/8s of the battle Steel. You'll be fine.

Ryan gave 100% of himself to his kids. Nothing mattered more to him than Jaiden and Jarrod. I lost my father at 11 yrs old and it was tragic but knowing he loved me unconditionally got me and my sister through it.

I can assure everyone on this board that at the very least those kids know Ryan loved them unconditionally. He fought for them when custody was at stake. I hope the families they have left remind them of that every day.

One more story about Ryan - or Jaiden really. Ryan told me one of the toughest decisions he had to make was when Jaiden got injured in a football game last fall. At 14, Jaiden is already a tough little SOB and he hurt his arm making a tackle.

He wanted to keep playing and Ryan yanked him out of the game. He said he was so proud Jaiden wanted to keep playing but he didn't let himself get caught up in the emotion. He sat Jaiden down and told him his health was more important. There was more football in his future.

They went to the doctor after the game and Jaiden had a broken arm. Anyone that is friends with Ryan on FB has probably seen the picture of Jaiden with the cast on his arm. Yep, he wanted to keep playing with that broken arm.

I think Jaiden is going to be okay through this. Ryan's Mom petitioned for custody today and I'm hoping the courts will take Jaiden's request into consideration because I'm pretty sure he liked to be with his grandmother. At 14, he will have some great memories of his fathter and time will heal his wounds.

Would you buy that I'm going to continue doing it in his honor? Wink

I'm going to miss that little dog dancing on the Steelers dance floor. I wonder if R.W. Chan would consider letting Lym keep the account active? I'll take any piece of Ryan I can get. Can't believe he's gone.

Speaking of DGNR8 and his propensity to push Firefox;

From Ringleader . . .

DGNR8: I have a problem. I watched the Super Bowl with my Grandma. Granny gave me a bowl of peanuts to munch on, and I mentioned how good they were. She said she only liked to suck the chocolate off. Will Firefox help?
DG's response . . .

Ring - Firefox may not be the answer to your problem, as it seems members of your family just suck. Don't worry, buddy. We all accept you the way you are.  Wink

Wow, I typically don't have too many nice things to say about anything but I enjoyed reading DG's posts and will miss the passion he had for his team, his sense of humor, and posting with him.

Although it means little in reality I honestly do wish the best for his kids and that they find a way to make it through this troubling time for them with as little pain and unrest as possible.

My next poo post is in your honor DG.  RIP

He always cracked me up no matter how crappy my  day was going . i enjoyed the many conversations we had and enjoyed reading his posts .

OK, well this sucks. To come back from vacation to this. Now everything else is going to seem trivial in comparison. It's nice to see the outpouring of support from the community. The true measure of success in life is the legacy you leave behind, the memories you create, the people whose lives you touch (and improve), and the number of friends you have. By all these measures, Ryan was a great success. He will be missed.

RIP Ryan, it is real shame to see a father with two young sons pass at 36, hits home, thats how old I am.

It is a stark reminder of two important things, one, live life to the fullest and two, these ARE real people on these boards, so the next time you want to flame somebody, remember that.

What does everyone else remember?

The NFL Vote-Off thread that sb= mentioned.  DG and I would spend hours on that stupid thread.  But they were the hours where I really got to know Ryan.  Ever since that thread, Ryan was more like a "Virtual Son" to me.  I began calling him ILTR8 in that thread and he named his FFB team that year the ILTR8's (or something of that nature).  He was the one who convinced me to change my AV from Abe Abraham to "Walter".   If he could something on this thread right now, I suspect it would be;
