2009 Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper Sucks ThreadMarch 11, 2012 3:32 pm
The Rams gained picks, not sure they want to reverse the trend, I just don't see that trade.
My thinking was if Blackmon is gone before they pick at six they may want to jump back into the first for a reciever they like, I know its unlikly but a guy like Stephen Hill or Kendall Wright if he falls that far could tempt them, or even a tackle like Mike Adams if they want to protect Bradford. The Rams have gained a lot of picks but I think that means there's more chance of them jumping up for a guy they really like who can improve their team rather than sitting and hoping he'll fall to them. Ny, I know you've been High on Fletcher Cox for a while but how high do you think he'll go? I mean a couple of weeks ago he seemed to be there or there abouts around our pick but now I'm seeing him mocked as high as the Panthers, thats some serious movement in a couple weeks. What could a guy like Coby Fleener do for this offense? I'm sure Ben would love the move, If we were somehow able to move back surely he should be seriously considered? Him and Miller would be deadly but TE isn't near the top of our needs but may be BPA when we pick? |

I understand all the hoopla around TE's these days, but I'm not buying into the whole Steelers-should/would/could-draft-a-tight-e
nd-this-April. Here's my thinking on the subject: Heath Miller isn't broken, right? Did I miss something? For the life of me I can't understand why we would be interested in drafting another TE when we haven't shown any signs in the past few years of effectively utilizing the position. Miller is a premier player at his position, yet we can't seem to put together a decent enough o-line to where he can run routes as often as his talents require. My answer - let's see how 2012 develops offensively before we try to mimic the Pats. Is there something about Todd Haley's offesive scheme that screams two-tight-end sets? He seemed to do a good job at utilizing TE's in KC, but, from what my meager familiarity with Chiefs football can recall, I've never known his offense to incorporate two tight-ends. If anything, his presence might remind everybody how great those man-mitts of Miller's are. I think we need to give Saunders a break. Sure, kid had a rep coming out of college, but at some point we have to recognize that the illegal substance policy in the NFL is pretty much a joke. Who in this chat room is kidding themselves thinking that steroids aren't rampant in professional football? anyone? and yet, rarely to we hear about someone getting busted? but a guy like Saunders fails for adderal? an ADHD drug? I know that it can be abused and combined with alcohol, but on this offense i'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt. Heck, even Braun got exonerated in baseball (kidding...he did it! lol). Hey, I'm not saying Saunders is the answer, but drafting a TE any were near the first 3 rounds of the draft this year would come across as a copycat-league manuever more so than a legitimate team-need/BPA selection. Sure, I get excited with the thought of putting together a prolific offense and prospects like Allen or Fleener are enticing, but I would like to queu that 'ol favorite song of Ben's called "I would like a big receiver to lob the ball to." Lest we forget that there are some decent (perhaps "project") receivers with good size in this draft that can be had later on. Draft a TE? I just don't see the logic in it. Of course, I'll be singing a different tune if say someone like Michael Egnew drops in our lap late in the draft, but to consider the likes of Allen or Fleener would mean to take one of them in the top, what, 45? I can't be convinced into thinking that there wouldn't be another player consierably more deserving at that point in this year's draft. Maybe I got it all backwards? I open it up to the floor... |

Reckless,
To add - this is a very weak TE class - Fleener is the only kid I'd think about early - only if the right scenerio played out - meaning trading back for multiple picks... - and a big NO if we are drafting at #24.. Other than that - no to first 3 rounds for a TE.. L.Green late - 5th round maybe - kid has potential - needs to but on some beef - he has great size (height) and good hands - if we dont draft a TE - I'm real fine with that - again - this class of TE is overall very weak... enjoy, bb |

He ran a 4.79 at 300 lbs., did well on the bench and the position drills. He is a starter from day one and has a more complete resume than Brockers. I saw all of this but the 40 yard time and I will stick with my guy on him. He is this years version of Muhamid Wilkerson, only better. Back to the trade, you would have to give up 56 to balance out the 24 for 33, 39 deal with the Rams. Also that point system is a guide, teams like the Red4skins don't follow it at all, obviously. What you NEVER want to do is what Colbert and Cowher did in 2004, trade up for an impulse pick. In 2004 they got Ben at 11, great value. but they moved up for RIcardo Coughclough and paid dearly for it. THey left a HUGE gap in their picks, 70 spots to be exact. (75 Starks to 145 Nathaniel Adibi). They really needed help at LB and by the time they picked again, the board was wiped clean. If you move up from 56 to 39, you leave a gap that may come back and bite you in the ass. HOwever if they get their target, Colbert won't hesitate. HEre is the history of the Steelers Draft. http://www.pro-football-reference.c om/teams/pit/draft.htm |
