Hey Rock and Packerz. Happy Friday.
Ten Years Gone- Led Zeppelin Tender is the Night- Tony Bennett Tenderness- Paul Simon Tennessee Jed- Furthur with Larry Campbell and Tesesa Williams (from Madison Square Garden, Nov. 2011). I was wearing my Tennessee sweatshirt in hopes they would play this song. This is the first of 3 versions of this song between Furthur and The Grateful Dead that I have, so I'll be back in about 1/2 hour once this set is over. |

Tenth Ave. Freezeout x3(two live, one studio)- Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band
Terrapin Station x2- The Grateful Dead This is, in my opinoin, Garcia and Hunters greatest composition. It's a mini-opera with a few of different musical movements and Hunter's cryptical story telling is front and center. Amazingly I only have two versions on my iPod. Live, the song usually clocks in around 13 minutes. Lately, Furthur has been playing the song in it's entirety. The studio version takes up all of side two of the band's album of the same name. The studio version has very complicated percussion and orchestration on the final movements. The Grateful Dead had only tackled the entire composition once in their history, sticking with the more accessible sections of the song. When the entire song is played live, it runs about 25 minutes. I did see Furthur perform it a couple of years ago. It was interesting to hear it, but I can live without it. Here are the lyricis to the firs movement, Lady With A Fan Let my inspiration flow in token rhyme, suggesting rhythm, That will not forsake you, till my tale is told and done. While the firelight's aglow, strange shadows from the flames will grow, Till things we've never seen will seem familiar. Shadows of a sailor, forming winds both foul and fair all swarm. Down in Carlisle, he loved a lady many years ago. Here beside him stands a man, a soldier from the looks of him, Who came through many fights, but lost at love. While the story teller speaks, a door within the fire creaks; Suddenly flies open, and a girl is standing there. Eyes alight, with glowing hair, all that fancy paints as fair, She takes her fan and throws it, in the lion's den. Which of you to gain me, tell, will risk uncertain pains of hell? I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance. The sailor gave at least a try, the soldier being much too wise, Strategy was his strength, and not disaster. The sailor, coming out again, the lady fairly leapt at him. That's how it stands today. You decide if he was wise. The story teller makes no choice. Soon you will not hear his voice. His job is to shed light, and not to master. Since the end is never told, we pay the teller off in gold, In hopes he will return, but he cannot be bought or sold |

Territorial Pissing- Nirvana
Interresting that this song comes up right after Terrapin Station. I remember readin an interview with Kurt Cobain where he said he despised hippies and that the only way he would ever wear tie-die, is if it dyed with Jerry Garcia's blood. Testify (Live)- SRV and Double Trouble |

That's Enough Out of You- Teddy Thompson That's Entertainment- The Jam One of my favorite songs by this underappreciate punk group that led the Mod Revival of the late 70's. This acoustic number with typically ascerbic lyrics from Paul Weller hinted at his latter solo work. It is one of the few songs that Weller still performs live from his Jam days. That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart x2 - Aimee Mann
One of my favorite songs from "The Forgotten Arm." I drew a picture of you You and your anchor tattoo And saw the face that I knew Covered in shame You drew a bird that was here A kind of sweet chanticleer But with a terrible fear That the cage couldn't tame That's how I knew this story would break my heart When you wrote it That's how I knew this story would break my heart So, like a ghost in the snow I'm getting ready to go 'Cause baby, that's all I know – How to open the door And though the exit is crude It saves me coming unglued For when you're not in the mood For the gloves and the canvas floor That's how I knew this story would break my heart When you wrote it That's how I knew this story would break my heart That's how I knew this story would break my heart When you wrote it That's how I knew this story would break my heart |

Her first solo "hit." It was helped along when it was used in an episode of Melrose Place. Co-written by super producer and frequent collaborator John Brion, it also has some nice background vocals by Glen Tillbrook of Squeeze. |
