The New 1970s Lyrics Game

Even though she's been around for about a decade, I only became aware of Joanna Newsom when I saw her perform 'Soft as Chalk' on Jimmy Fallon's show a couple of years ago.  Of her other songs that I've listened to, 'Sadie' stands out as one of her best.  While her strange style is not for everyone, anyone that can be compared to Dylan lyrically, is definitely doing something right.

Looking out my window at some girl as I'm writing this
And I watch her eat a peach, the way she's biting it, biting it
And I probably shouldn't stare, but  I am fighting it, fighting it
And I think that she's aware and kind of liking it, liking it

Now, I goin' to Rosedale, Take my rider by my side
Still barrelhouse, If it's on the riverside, yeah
I know my baby, Lord, I said, "is really sloppy drunk"
I know my mama, Lord, a brownskin, but she ain't no plum

Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) Harry Belfaonte

This song is probably more known as an instrumental

The story goes that once a cherry tree
Beside an apple tree did grow
And there a boy once met his bride-to-be
Long long ago

From a garden that was eden
Strange the fruit it Bears for me
And the wind will spread the fire
And the rain will ever fall
If no one reads the writing
That's been written on the wall

The Apple Song - Squeeze

Old man sailin’ in a dinghy boat
Down there
Old man down is baitin’ a hook
On there
Gonna pull man down on a suckling hook
Gonna pull man into the suckling brook
Oh yeah!

God Didn't Make The Little Green Apples - Roger Miller

It hurts to see the man I've become, to know I'll never see the morning sunshine on the land.
I'll never see your smiling face or touch your hand.
If just once more I could see, you, our home and our little baby.

She was the apple of temptation
The apple of my eye
Used to rest on a bed of burning coals
Every single night
And I know she's out there somewhere
She's wrestling in the bones
With confetti in her hair
You can bet she's not alone
