I only do draft, not free agents.

Safeties I like early on:

Eric Reid
TJ McDonald
Robert Lester

then later on:

Ray Polk out of Colorado, sleeper pick.

I discovered a good CB in Clemson last year named Coty Sensabaugh, he climbed up a few hundred spots over the course of the season. Will be looking hard at the secondary in the upcoming weeks.

2013......this is a weak safety class, the year to draft a safety was 2010, Seattle got half their secondary for years to come with Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor.  I am with others, now starting to hate the Chris Rainey pick, available were: George Iloka, Justin Bethel, Markelle Martin.  Not a big fan of Ryan Mundy, as are most of us.

I was just going to post something along the lines of: we definitely need to address safety this offseason!  I see Eric Reid is the highest rated on the boards, but dont know much about him, if he would be a reach in the first or if hes just the best in a crappy class, thus overrrated in the first round?

Inside linebacker maybe in the later rounds, I've watched every Penn State game this year and would love to see Michael Mauti and to a lesser extent Gerald Hodges in a Steelers uniform!

Is it me or does it seem like Ike Taylor commits pass intereference on every play?  Just an observation . . .

Holding calls aside, Willie Colon is Ben's boy and may just need some time adjusting to a new position and new side.  Ben keeps saying that he is pancaking guys all game long, so whatever that is worth . . .

This may be the last year for the bloated salaries of the likes of Hampton, Harrison, and Polamalu

Nope, I don't care for Jefferson right now. It's early on in the season and I like the other three safties because of their length, being able to battle the taller WR and defend passes is a must in today's NFL.

I am not stuck on height, heck Polamalu is short and so isn't Earl Thomas, they are the exceptions not the rule.  Seeing Troy and Bob Sanders punish themselves year after year, I think a bigger Safety might hold up longer, just an observation.  Right now Jefferson is battling an ankle issue, but came back and played at a high level after missing a few games.  I guess I am kicking the tires looking for dings and dents.

Denard Robinson, meh, we already got a speedy little dude in Chris Rainey. The speedy little guy I think "could" make a splash in the NFL is De'Anthony Thomas, who will come out after his Junior year most likely, see The 2014 NFL draft.  The other Duck RB to look at in April is Kenjon Barner.  Sometimes guys get burried on the depth chart, see Michael Smith out of Utah State last year. With Robert Turbin get the press and the bulk of the work, Smith went unnoticed by many, but not all.  Wink

With every game, the draft position moves up. Tomlin better draft Defense with the first two picks.

RE: Tomlin better draft Defense with the first two picks

No, Tomlin needs to stay out of the draft, except to give Cowher a call to help Colbert rebuild this defense. The players they are drafting on defense, outside of Woodley, dont fit the scheme or just plain SOCK!!.

As it stands now, it's lookin' like one of them 9 and 7 seasons, but I could see 10 wins, honestly, so long as we get healthy. Anywho...where would 9 wins put us in the draft roughly? 16 - 20 or something like that? We might could have a chance at one of the top DBs in the draft around there or perhaps a OLB worthy of replacing Harrison (jury is still out on Worilds, but I am very happy with his recent performances (heck, Harrison seems to be healthy again, so maybe he's got another 2 in him?)).

What about a T'eo if he's there? I like Spence's potential, but it wouldn't hurt to load up at the LB position in all facets.

My Offseason Pre-draft moves proposal:

1. Ask Lebeau to retire so Butler can take over.
2. Send Tomlin to an NFL game management course.

My Offseason Draft Proposal:

1. Send Tomlin to the Cowboys draft with Jerry Jones. (rarbreed approves)
2. Without reaching, draft a safety in the 1st or 2nd round or both. (They should have a high pick in next year's draft.)
3. Backup QB to grrom under Ben
4. more OL (will this ever end)
5. OLB
6. MLB
7. No WRs (even if Wallace isnt back)

Caught quite a bit of the late SEC games, SC vs. LSU, and Tenn vs. MIss. State. Had to get the leaves up, gutter done, stack firewood, smart move on my part, raining today can't do squat outside.

Stock up:

Jonathon Banks, pretty much held Hunter in check for most of the game, had a real nice strip and recovery on  running play. Kid likes to stick his nose into the pile, typical Steeler DB. He did get juked on a running play, but that happens to even the best of them. He also returns punts and has solid hands.

Cordarelle Patterson- Just get him the ball, I like him better than Justin Hunter, call me a kook.

Eric Reid- nice pick and plays center field very nicely, like the size and athleticism.

Sam Montgomery- way more explosive than Mingo.

Stock Down:

Geno Smith- Welcome to Earth son.

Marcus Lattimore- I do not see the same back I saw in 2011. I would not use a first round pick on a RB coming off of a serious injury.

Barkevioiuis Mingo- disappeared yesterday a lot, IMHO, yes he had a  sack, but I was not overly impressed.

Brad Wing- two major shanks, I mean awful punts.

Ohio State- they overlooked Indiana.

Stock Neutral:

Jadeveon Clowney- Batted down balls, brang pressure, but when they ran right at him, he was washed out consitantly.

New Faces in the Crowd:

Player of the game for LSU was a freshman who did his impersonation of Jim Brown, meet Jeremy Hill. (just so happens to be the exact height and weight of the HOFer)

Ace Sanders, catches everything, dynamite Returner.

Baker Swedenburg- P, Miss. State, averaged 42 yds. but he also has direction and location skills.

Contiues to annoy me.

Beth Mowins- I was at restaturant eating lunch with the wife, and I asked to be seated away from the tv, she's that annoying guys.

Brent Mussberger- called Steve Spurrier the The Old Ball Coach. what does that mean, his nuts get wet when he flushes?

Lou Holtz- Okay jackass, if the whistle did not blow, the second effort got Stepfan Taylor over the Goal Line, his freakin knee never hit the ground. I would recommend new glasses but I am not sure what comes after the bottom of a coke bottle. BLIND HOMER, you have no business analyzing games you old turd. ESPN is bad, he is near the top of the list of sucky begind Kiper, Berman, McShay, Keyshawn, Meatstick, and Mowins.

sorry about that, I need to qualfiy my stock down on Mingo a bit more. I think that Mingo is a great player, but I had no choice but to go stock down, I mean he is currently rated as the best player on CBS's big board, I just don't think he is the best player in the NCAA right now. After yesterday with the #1 pick,  I don't see teams taking him over everyone else.

Somebody else's draft stock I see slowly coming BACK, albeit, of no importance to the Steelers draft needs, is QB Tyler Wilson, Arkansas.  Dominant performance against Kentucky on Saturday!

Bugphuccer's mocks, just plain lazy. Steelers picking 13th, taking Marcus Lattimore because Rashard Mendenhall is talented but injury prone. Mendenhall had no injuries coming out of Illinois,  Lattimore on the other hand missed almost all of last year, talk about sideways logic and just plain half-azzed. And then they changed his logic to Mendenhall is a free agent. Who is to say Colbert does not keep #34? Both "experts" had the same pick at 21 before they adjusted the draft order. That is flat out mailing it in. YOu move up 8 spots and the pick does not change Dane...  REALLY?

Rob Rang changed the pick to Kawann Short DT out of Purdue, not sure if he playes the 0/1 or the 3, have not watched him yet or know much about him other than he is ranked behind Star Lotuleli, who is a beast.  Still on the board are Eric Reid, Xavier Rhodes,  Manti Te'o and Johnathon Banks in Bugphuccers mock...  The Steelers still have someting in Isaac Redman and Jonathon Dwyer along with Baron Batch, no panic mode taking a RB in round one.  And at 13 they could do better going BPA even if it's Keenan Allen.

I did some recon on Kawann Short, pretty good player on a crappy team. I remember back in 1987 the Steelers took a kid out of Purdue, he ended up in the HOF.  The thing about Short is he is not one-dimensional, does more than tie up blockers. He sacks the QB, blocks FG's on Special teams and pretty much blows up the line and has 9 TFL on the season.

PSU was dealt another tradgedy, a 19 year old Cheerleader fell 39 feet from a 5th floor window, ruled an accident. Huh, how do you fall out of a window unless alchohol or horse play is involved, not sure on that one. Prayers go out for the Raque family.

Purdue plays Ohio State in Columbus at noon on Saturday.   How did Montee Ball run for almost 250 yards against this team, interesting. Let's see how Short does against the Buckeyes and the moblie QB, I think OSU runs amok.  I am still not convinced Short is another Ziggy Hood who does not really fit the scheme.  Not stuck on height, but how many batted down balls does JJ Watt have? Guys 6-3 with short arms playing the 5, you lose the ability to block the passing lane without leaving your feet. We've seen the results of a player leaving his feet and not holding his ground or keeping contain.

Round 1, Walter Football has the Steelers reaching for Alec Ogletree ILB, with Te'o off the board. Banks is off the board too, but Xavier Rhodes and Eric Reid still available, I think they have Sly waiting in the wings.  I think DB is where the depth is talent void, especially Safety.

Round two Sean Porter, that would be BPA or close to it cannot argue the pick.

Round three I disagree with again, the mock has them taking RB, Stepfan "Hey, I scored Lou Holtz you idiot" Taylor over Nico Johnson, where I think ILB and value would make more sense. I sort of doubt they go Defense in the first 3 picks, but stranger t hings have happened.

It will be interesting in February, a lot of players getting a lot of money and not playing well or staying healthy.   Troy Polamalu, James Harrison, and Ike Taylor.  And how many more seasons does Ryan Clark have? Big Snack will be done in 2012 and Brett Keisel is winding down.  I like the fact they brought back Corbin Bryant, Alemeda Ta'amu is an idiot.

Will the Steelers go Florida again, the one logical pick I see is Xavier Nixon, OT. He has a huge upside and I think they get another year out of Starks and hopefully "oh my toe" Gilbert stays healthy. Adams, if only he could pass protect like he run blocks....

I still think Colbert goes RB later on, Kenjon Barner seems logical. Not sure where Montee Ball and Le'Veon Bell are going to go, but probably earlier than later.  Oklahoma State plays Iowa State, check your local listings for noon Saturday, keep an eye on Joseph Randle.

Steelers signed OG John Malecki from the team's practice squad.

Defensive end Corbin Bryant was waived in a corresponding move. Pittsburgh needs the depth with RT Marcus Gilbert (ankle) and C Maurkice Pouncey (knee) ailing. Source: [Mark Kaboly on Twitter ]
