Well... it's not that simple, imo.  The issue with standardized testing comes from the emphasis placed on the tests - how teachers teach to the test is a result of that, not a cause.

In other words, teachers teach to the test because that is how they are measured, how they keep their job.  When funding is tied to test scores, administrators demand certain scores, and don't care how teachers get those scores.  Many schools demand that the teachers within teach the test itself, because the administrators' jobs rely on those scores as well.

Imo, the biggest problem is that the test have become the end-all-be-all of education, rather than the education itself.  Personally, I don't even think standardized testing is a good way to test kids on actual knowledge, as taking a standardized test is a skill in and of itself. 

For example, I graduated HS in 2003.  At that point, in NC, every course had an EOC (end of course test), that was entirely multiple choice, and counted for 25% of our final grade.  Except the grade given was on a curve, based on percentiles.  So I could earn a raw score of 50 on one of those tests, but score in the 90th percentile, and receive a 90 as 25% of my final grade (this has not changed, my youngest brother graduated from the same HS just 2 years ago, same stuff).

What I cannot figure out is how on earth that is beneficial to our students, which begs the question, how is it beneficial to our nation? 

I can't even figure out what our tests are really measuring, other than ability to take a standardized test.

The reason STEM courses aren't being taught well is not because of budgeting.  It's not like our science and math results from public schools went sideways three years ago.

First, just because someone has a different opinion than you and knows how to add and subtract doesn't mean he can't be believed.  In fact, given your track record with the facts in this thread, assuming someone arguing different facts than you is probably a solid default position to take.

Holy Crap, the best thing we can do for this country is adopt a poll test.  We can let everyone cast a ballot so nobody has to feel bad, but your vote only counts if you can pass a simple test.
