out like a fat girl in dodgeball! his should got hit time and time again and after a crushing sack to the ground the shoulder couldn't take anymore punishment. at 7-4 why risk more injury when he has to get ready for the nfl draft where his stock is already plummetting.

It's my understanding that the founder of Under Armour and Maryland alumnus was the driving force behind the move to the Big Ten and he was possibly going to foot some of the bill for the exit fee.  Now I hear that Rutgers is going to go as well, but nothign official yet.  I still think they should keep going and get Ga Tech and Florida State while they are at it.  I guess there is some weird rule about only taking states in a contiguous line, but rules are meant to be broken so why not, then you pick up the Atlanta market and the Seminoles who are national fan based.  Would love to see a Michigan FSU game or OSU FSU battle, even Iowa FSU, heck I am not far from Illinois (2.5 hours) would drive over there to see FSU or Ga Tech but likely not Maryland or Rutgers.

Barkley is out for sure, his O line sucks and couldn't protect him, shoulder is crushed for now.

Honestly I don't care if ND wins or not, but if ND is there and vs Bama, I am rooting for the Irish, if it ends up UGA, that is harder for me to choose, if it is Oregon or someone else the same...it's not that I hate ND, but they have National Championships, root for the underdog.  However, if I was a kid and wanted to go to a good school and football program it would be hard to turn ND down.

just read the front page story on Maryland as well, basically they are coming to the Big Ten due to needing money (confused why the Big Ten wants them then other than to establish a presence there and recruiting lines) but they cut 7 sports recently and the Big Ten will be financially a boon to them so who knows, maybe the Big Ten is helping out on the exit fee as well

do you have a link to the SW story?  I think I might have read that other series but would need the titles to the books...

I will just enjoy whatever football game it is since neither Mizzou nor Iowa will be in a bowl this year.

Lincoln, apparently it bombed money wise, got 3rd place last weekend

Saw the Bond movie klast weekenfd and Lincoln this weekend. Unless I am way off the mark Lincoln has a endless supply of Oscar nominations in the bag.
Best Picture
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supprting Actor
Best Costumes
Best Score
Best Director
Best Screenplay
....and maybe more.
I think it's an instant classic and Day Lewis's best job ever. That alone is saying a ton from one of today's best! I minore in history in college and this was a serious part of our history.

yammer-i majored in history and still didn't know a lot about the background this movie had.

came into the movie hearing a ton about sally field's role as oscar worthy. she's not in it very often but the scene about her losing her son with dd lewis was unreal. and in real life after lincoln died robert had her committed.

i also think david strathairn will get a nom too. He was Lincoln's Sec of State. TL Jones was awesome.

As for DD-Lewis, I read he research the role of Lincoln so much and was almost HIM! I am still pissed that after he won his second Oscar he didn't come back the next year to give out the Best Actress Oscar as required due to a film obligation. Look. someone did it for you, so do it for someone else. He should win the Oscar in a lock!

The movie went too deep into the background of the 13th Amendment and not enough about the Civil War or why he was shot. Bummer. Still a A+ movie.

one question on it...did DDL do Lincoln's voice as it was, kind of high pitched?  A bit like Mike Tyson...you wouldn't expect him to have  a high pitched voice but apparently he really did so if this movie was accurate I hope he did.

I have been to Lincoln's museum and hometown a long time ago, still have my giant penny around somewhere, I guess it is really nice now though, renovation and all that, going to have to take the kids since it is pretty close.

As far as the money goes, if it was that great then it would do well, if Skyfall which is on its 3rd week still beat it, then I have to wonder, but it is an Oscar movie, drama and while it might be good, usually those movies are pretty boring.  It's pretty rare for an Oscar movie to be a good one...just my 2 cents.  Half the time I have never even heard of those Oscar movies.

Spielberg made everyone refer to him as Mr President on the sets just to further the role.
Cat you are right on the death of the son scene and every Day Lewis has them.
Remember the buthering scene from streets of New York? The scene in "Last of the Mohicans" when he did the "stay alive" bit?

i read he kept in character offset and even text sally field while offset but in character to keep their dialogue fresh.

hawk-every james bond does well opening week for all the fans out there who wanna see it after a 4 yr layoff. to put it up against lincoln was silly. and twilight and it's $141 million dollar opening weekend proves my point even more. no movie was beating twiligh and bond.

his voice was high pitched at times but not like mike tyson. jeez. no one is that high.

and sally field is good in it but not for an oscar. a nom maybe but not the win. heard naomi watts is unreal in that movie about the tsunami.

daniel day-lewis was robbed of an oscar for gangs of ny but repaid for there will be blood as he was great but the movie was boring and slow and over the top.

Notre Dame ended up 12-0...only in America would we have a Catholic school named after a French church called the Fighting Irish...that's the melting pot for you.  Founded by French priests and populated by Irish Catholics in its early days, the name actually translates to Our Lady. So the Our Lady Fighting Irish have a chance to bring home another NC, good luck, really surprised me this year.  Quite an interesting story about the founders coming over and they were of the Holy Cross order and decided that South Bend was a good place to start a school.

RIP Macho Camacho

First bowl season in ages that I really don't have a dog in the fight, both my black and gold teams staying home.  One certain coach in a four letter state has really angered the fan base...KF needs a kick in the pants.  5th highest paid coach and no bowl...needs to give some salary back IMO.

This is the time of year I just want to hibernate.  Wake me up in late March.

Howdy Hawkeye! Feel free to cheer for my Irish!

Notre Dame is not named for the cathedral in France, but both are named for Mary. The university is Notre Dame du Lac, Our Lady of the Lake. The univerasity is situated on two spring-fed lakes. (Home of the Fighting Trumpeter Swans these days!)Fighting Irish became their mascot back in the day when a reporter noted that the team fought like a bunch of Irish. Definitely not politically correct, but seeing how many Irish-Americans were Catholic, totally accepted back then.

So it's all about drunken Irish catholics. Seems pretty reasonable since you can go into any bar these days and find the same.

The catholics chose that name because Notre dame because the basilica of sts Peter and Paul was just too long. The "Abby in westminster" fell from grace ( protestant ). They needed a real spiritual church and Rev. Moon was'nt around yet.

I got my info off of the Notre Dame.edu site, here is what it said written by Charles Carey, who was a big wig at ND and live to the age of 90 and spent over 60 years on campus.  Really doesn't matter if they are by a lake but since it is then amend it to Our Lady of the Lake Fighting Irish, doesn't instill the same fear, and the essential is the same, French founders, Irish populated for the most part then it just stuck.

Many people wonder (or worry) about Notre Dame and that word, Irish. To us, it doesn't mean race exclusively; nor is it just another nickname. The fact is, it keeps alive the memory of a long, uphill fight for recognition against a spirit that was not always generous, nor even fair-minded. The Irish, as known at Notre Dame, has an authentic history and a meaning deeper even than race.

Notre Dame began athletic relations chiefly with local colleges founded by various denominations. Press reports would refer to the schools as the “Baptists” or the “Methodists,” and the like. For Notre Dame it was the “Catholics,” or the “Irish.” But the players were never all of Irish ancestry; nor were they all Catholics.

The usage was not original, but a continuing custom from earlier Colonial times. The bulk of the first Catholic immigrants were Irish -- so that Catholics and Irish were identical in the public mind. It is sad to recall now, but few of the original states were without laws against them. Advertisements for ‘help wanted’ commonly carried the restriction: “No Catholics. No Irish.” The Puritans were the first to cry: “Stop the Irish!”

When the religious origin of other colleges lost its significance, the emphasis shifted to conventional names, and to their school colors. But history is recorded remembrance in our blessed heritage here at Notre Dame. Fighting Irish! It’s more than a name; more than a people. It is the Faith!

In narrow, little New England, it began as a slur -- a term of opprobrium. But we took it up and made of it a badge of honor -- a symbol of fidelity and courage to everyone who suffers from discrimination; to everyone who has an uphill fight for the elemental decencies, and the basic Christian principles woven into the texture of our nation. Preserving this tradition, and this meaning of Irish at Notre Dame does honor to everyone of us. It explains why Lewinski belongs here; why Alessandrini is the Irish leader; why Schmaltz belongs here; why Bertrand, and Moreau, Van Dyke, and Larson feel at home here as much as do Leahy and O’Brien.

Cat....the movie was not about the civil war. It was Spielberg's 13 years of work on the 13th amendment.
I do agree about his missing the best actress award but i just figured it was that damn English thing an the've been strange since we ran them off. That he is alsop Irish though leaves him with no excuse. Those Irish (my mom by the way) are the salt and Ale of the earth. Wink

yam-- i thought it would be about the civil war as the opening scene looked like he was going the same route as saving private ryan but then it wasn/t. i have no problem with the movies topic. just wanted more action and less political dialogue.
