The ACC Thread...................................November 30, 2012 6:48 am
Geneh, from what I can put together, the Big 12 was awaiting the results of the Maryland litigation. They were reluctant to pay out 50 or 100 million to the ACC. I think the waiting line had Louisville third with two ACC teams in front of the Cards. Swofford needs to continue his piracy & bring in Cincinnati to backfill in case of raids. And surely the Big 12 will get aggressive soon although I would keep one eye onthe SEC right now. The next 6 months will be critical for the ACC's future IMO.
And now that we have mutual interests, Geneh, I hope that you are right & I am wrong about the dominoes. I don't think the exit fee will ever hold up anyway. |

Good post, misterjimi.
Geneh, from what I can put together, the Big 12 was awaiting the results of the Maryland litigation. They were reluctant to pay out 50 or 100 million to the ACC.The Big 12 is content to sit on their hands for now, anyway. The only move they could have made that makes any sense was inviting Louisville. The Big 12 is also looking at catching bigger fish like the FSU/Clemson "almost" move before the season started. Now that Louisville is off the table, I imagine the Big 12 will stand pat. They have little choice now. I think the waiting line had Louisville third with two ACC teams in front of the Cards. If you are talking about the Big 12, I agree. But they couldn't land the ACC fish and they let the Cards get off the hook. Swofford needs to continue his piracy & bring in Cincinnati to backfill in case of raids.I think Swofford realizes that it is better to just hold off for now. The ACC does not want the B1G and SEC to get any ideas about jumping to 16 team conferences any time in the near future so he is holding off, not wanting to start a chain reaction for everybody to go to 16. And surely the Big 12 will get aggressive soonI don't see that - unless they try to raid the ACC again. Good luck coming up helping FSU come up with the exit money. although I would keep one eye onthe SEC right now.The SEC can benefit greatly by taking NCSU and VT. I don't know what they are waiting for, really. Of course we will just backfill with UConn and Cinci if/when they do. The next 6 months will be critical for the ACC's future IMOMaybe. It depends on how fast the SEC and B1G want to get to 16 teams. I don't see the Big 12 as a real threat. They struck out on FSU & Clemson so they are batting zero when it comes to raiding the ACC. I see them standing pat for now due to a real lack of options. Surely they do not want to add any MWC or CUSA teams. Cinci is a possibility, but who comes in with them? And now that we have mutual interests, Geneh, I hope that you are right & I am wrong about the dominoes. I don't think the exit fee will ever hold up anyway. It held up well enough for the BE. WVU worked out a deal, sure. But the schools who want to change conferences cannot afford to get into a long litigation process - that would hold up their move, after all. Better to settle the lawsuit as soon as possible. Md won't have to pay $50 million, but I will bet they do have to fork out 30-40 million and give up something else in the process to make a deal work. Remember that many of the considerations in the WVU deal were not disclosed. The ACC is a great move for Louisville. I understand the desire to be in with OU and Texas, but Louisville will benefit greatly financially in the ACC. Their #21 profitability rating from basketball - over everybody else's football programs - will get better and richer in the ACC. One thing people do not take into consideration is the financial stability of the ACC. We've got tons of money and will make tons more even though the B1G and SEC will make more than we do, we are far, far from being poor man out. |

We ought to have the BB tournament in the Georgia Dome. We would fill it up with no problem.
UNC VS. SYRACUSE DUKE VS. LOUISVILLE ETC., ETC., ETC. |

Apparently a writer for 24/7 Sports tweeted earlier today that Ga. Tech has agreed to join the B1G. About an hour later, his tweet was deleted and he started back-tracking on what he said. Did anyone else happen to see that tweet? I found it on the Carolina Scout messageboard, but it has since been removed.

It may be just a little more than that, geneh. UCF HC & buddy of Paul Johnson stated on his show this week that there will be wild changes in the ACC very soon.
Multiple blogs are reporting that GT has already been approved by the Big Ten. GT has made no secret about wanting in. If this really happens, the ACC will be in serious instability with the dominoes lined up. |

That means that either NCSU or VT will go to the Belk Bowl, pushing Duke down to the Music City Bowl.
I'm hoping SU gets into the Belk Bowl. Future versus old time ACC would be very cool. But it looks like everything is pointing towards the Pinstripe. SU or Pitt have been mentioned. And WV out of the B12. GB2....Who do you want most? Pitt or SU? |

Ugh, it looks like FSU will face NIU...
I mean good for NIU, but who honestly thinks they can pull off the upset? I'm not trying to be a homer, but... Then again, stranger things have happened. If FSU lost that game I would be happy for NIU to do that, but at the same time I'd prolly burst into tears of laughter seeing FSU lose |

The ACC has some good things going on right now:
LOUISVILLE joining the conference and FSU going to the Orange Bowl. The ACC also has some bad things going on right now: 1. Maryland, God bless their souls, is gone. 2. GT might be next along with UVA. 3. FSU has to play NIU in the Orange, making it a BCS trap game. 4. VT had a 6 win season, which also means 6 losses, not good for the ACC. |

Geneh 32. you need to do a reality check. The ACC is on life support as a football conference. I'll give you the edge as a BB conference, but one of the worst FB conferences in the country. VT is no real contender. They play is a weak division and they were so bad they ended up at the bottom. Duke, UNC, NCSU, Virginia - get serious - all these teams are terrible. The ACC does not even deserve an autiomatic bid to a bowl.

The ACC is going strong financially and is hardly on life support. Trading Maryland for Louisville is actually better for the ACC from a financial perspective. Louisville's BB team makes more money than all but 20 football programs. Even though the ACC was down this year, we still filled up our stadiums and love our teams. And we still spend our money on them even though they weren't all that good this year. But there will always be next year... And I certainly hope so for your case in VCU and WVU. You are still angry because the ACC dissed on WVU? Get over it already. |

Fill your stadiums. No Chance have you seen all the empty seats at Maryland, UVA, Miami, Wake Forrest, BC, Duke as well as a few others. The only three teams who sell out consistently are Fla State, Va Tech and Clemson. Stick to basketball, baseball, golf, soccer and Lacross Real football is played in the SEC.

Gamecocksrup, Gamecocks are actually down, if you know what I mean.
And you can stick your "real football" up your butt. The SEC blows a lot of smoke up people's butts including yours. You've got 6 good teams and 8 bad ones. The 8 bad ones are pulling you down with them. Can you say, Top Heavy? The ACC talent is more smoothly spread out among its teams. And the ACC is still #2 in what really counts: Putting players in the NFL. Just keep on oversigning and cheating - you'll win a title just like your fellow SECers, too! |

Kind of funny that a USc guy comes onto our thread to talk smack. They haven't done squat in football...ever. Thanks for coming on and representing the 4th best team in your conference.South Carolina is the only team to have played in both the ACC and SEC besides Georgia Tech. The difference is that GT won both conference titles while SC... has never won anything worth bragging about. They have just now gotten to where they can beat UGA and Clemson in the same season. SC = Zero conference championships SC = Zero (NOT EVEN CLOSE) National titles When Spurrier leaves or croaks, the Game Cocks**** will go right back to sucking hind tit in the SEC East basement along with Vanderbilt. |

Yeah, not sure why in the world a South Carolina fan would talk chit about anyone else's team/conference.
I guess that's why the SEC people are so nutts about their conference, gives the bottom dwellers and average teams a chance to chant something (SEC...SEC...SEC...). So obnoxious. |

I am kind of hoping the B1G comes along and snatches UVA and GT - so we can get Cinci and UConn out of that Big East-MWC-CUSA conference. I would love to see both in the ACC while UVA and GT can take a hike if that's what they want to do.

This is a pretty good article about the ACC, expansion rumors, etc. It predates the GT rumor, though but its a good read for ACC fans:
[http://frankthetank.wordpress.com/] Rumor has it right now that the B1G is looking at UVA and GT. But I don't think it has any validity and everybody out there is denying that it is happening so it probably isn't. |

The ACC does not even deserve an autiomatic bid to a bowl. Thanks for adding your opinion - but the ACC will send a team to the Orange Bowl GUARANTEED for the next 12 years so you had better get used to it, like it or not, it is going to happen for a very long time to come. Unlike you, the Orange Bowl loves the ACC. Best look out for your 7-5 WVU team that was talking NC preseason and Heisman for Geno preseason. You'd best look after matters you might actually have some control over. |

Too bad you don't know anything about football and the $$ football brings. It makes the conferences - end of story. When you need to revert to personal attacks you only expose your immaturity and ignorance. Stay on task if you are smart enough and sto[p sniffing glue. Keep hoping and praying for your great ACC football conference. It's all about money pal, and if the ACC comes apart as some believe, those big contracts will be challenged (because TV $ prevail) as the ACC will be no longer the same. Be prepared to see FSU, Clemson, possibly UVA and UNC all looking for greener pastures in the next 3-5 years. Its all about making money. I'm sure FSU is absolutely jumping up and down thinking about their NIU match-up. Even if they win, so what. No one cares. |

if the ACC comes apart as some believe,Key phrase in your post. The ACC is not going to come apart. As many defections as the Big 12, Big East, CUSA and Sun Belt have had, all 4 conferences are still alive and well. The ACC is no different except for the fact that we make a whole lot more money than at least 3 of those 4. Be prepared to see FSU, Clemson, possibly UVA and UNC all looking for greener pastures in the next 3-5 years. Its all about making money. Why do you think FSU stayed instead of splitting? Because the ACC was willing to help them with their money problems while the Big 12 refused to do so because they didn't care or didn't have the money. FSU and Clemson will not go to the Big 12 and the SEC does not want them. Next subject, please. I'm sure FSU is absolutely jumping up and down thinking about their NIU match-up. Even if they win, so what. No one cares. How are they jumping up and down? NIU is a formidable opponent and FSU had better take them seriously. And I CARE, so do the many millions of ACC fans. You care because you hate the ACC because they passed on WVU. If you claim you don't care, why bother to post about it? You obviously do care so that makes you a liar. Oh well. Life goes on. You'd better hope Syracuse doesn't do another number on WVU like they did last year. It sounds like you have enough problems worrying about sweeping out your own house to go around dissing on the ACC. |

geneh,
I believe the ACC schools, who are thinking about leaving the conference, are waiting to see what happens with Maryland before making any decision. If Maryland is able to negotiate a reduction in the exit fee from $50 million to $25-$30 million, then that could open the door for some schools. The only way the Big XII will expand is if their media contract goes up significantly and I believe Clemson and Florida State are probably the only ACC schools (right now) that fit the description. Now it is debatable what the Big XII defines as being "significant." Would the Big XII invite Clemson and Florida State to join the conference if all 12 schools were able to earn $40 million per year? $50 million per year? $60 million per year? Something else to consider is the threat of Clemson and Florida State may force the ACC to rethink its position on starting a network. |
