I still think Rube is in the mix for a big name. I actually don't hate the deal, Revere is your classic Michael Bourn type outfielder and he's really cheap. Won't be arb eligible till 2014.

Ben Revere, 1st round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins (28th overall) in 2007. Date of Birth is 5/3/88. Bats L, Throws R
Minors: 2007: Gulf Coast Twins: .325 with 21 SB 2008: Beloit, Class A: .379 with 44 SB 2009: Fort Myers, A+: .311 with 45 SB 2010: New Britain, AA: .305 with 36 SB 2011: Rochester, AAA: .303 with 8 SB 2012: Rochester, AAA: .330 with 6 SB Majors: 2010: Twins: .179 in 28 ABs 2011: Twins: .267 with 34 SB 2012: Twins: .294 with 40 SB In 989 Major League at bats he has struck out just 100 times. I don't remember specifics but I do remember seeing him make a great catch in centerfield against the Ironpigs in May, 2011 at Coca-Cola Park. Won't be arb eligible till 2014.and can't become a free agent until 2018. He earned $492,500 in 2012 so he basically puts up similar offensive numbers to Michael Bourn at about $15 million less. |

Ognir
are we the only 2 manning the Frandsen train still ??? LOL .. im serious, id like to see him get a real chance. He has no power, but neither does Young anymore. Is Young truly going to be that much of an upgrade |

Frandsen is a guy who will get exposed with extended playing time. Is it possible everything just clicked for him? I suppose. But the overwhelming odds are that he is a guy who came up and was hitting well.
He certainly deserves a roster spot and playing time, but he will be overmatched in a full-time role. Young isn't the answer either, though. |

young is still an above average potentially scary RH bat that can play both 3B and 1B take some heat of howard as well as in a best case scenario play 2/3s of a season at 3rd...there ain't much else out there this year period
no one is giving up on frandsen and with young it could be an interesting and effective platoon |

If Young enjoys playing the game, he would accept the trade. In Philly he'll play everyday but if he stays in Texas he won't have a full time job. Here's hoping we have Michael Young by the end of the day. Also all this means the Phillies should have money for another FA corner OF'er. Hamilton or Swisher?

Also all this means the Phillies should have money for another FA corner OF'er. Hamilton or Swisher? could be .. but call me nuts, i could see them throwing a nice chunk of change to a setup guy.... not saying its what i want, just I could see it |

Just wondering but why would Swisher be a bad signing? |

Offseason Phillies TransactionsDecember 6, 2012 1:45 pm
Id prefer
Revere and Young batting 1 and 2 but I agree ... Rollins is still going to be leadoff |

Swisher is entering his declining years. He's a .250s hitter. He will be very expensive. He is something like a .170 career hitter in the postseason. It's one thing if that was a very small sample size, but that's 154 ABs.
Why pay top dollar for someone who always chokes when it matters most? It's not like he's going to suddenly figure it out at age 32. |
|
-
Offseason Phillies TransactionsDecember 6, 2012 3:27 pm
Chooch was probably sharing his Adderal with Frandsen.
How else could you explain a career backup leading the Phillies and the NL in batting average after the all-star break? The Nationals just signed Dan Haren to a one year 13 million dollar deal, in case anyone isn't aware. Phillies have to get someone as good as Worley to keep up the pace. (if they do in fact trade him for Revere) |

The Worley/Revere trade just went official. Michael Young is next...

The acquisition of Revere for two pitchers who regressed in 2012 is a plus move. Revere is a highlight reel waiting to happen and that has the potential to happen every single game. In a way he reminds me of Devon White and he was as good as it gets in CF. Fills a vital need the Phillies had. Offensively he will provide very little but on those occasions he gets on base I hope the Phillies give him the green light. He has no arm to speak of but if you can run the ball down it goes a long way to mitigating that shortcoming. As was pointed out he comes at a price tag of about $15M less and more than 5 years younger than Michael Bourn.
Now the idea of bringing Michael Young in and actually having him slip on a glove and play in the field is sheer lunacy. |

If you look at the numbers put up by Revere, Span and Bourn you'll see that Revere had a better BA then the other 2, scored just about the same number of runs as Span and 20 less then Bourn (however in 30 less games then Bourn) and also stole more bases then Span and only 2 less then Bourn (again in 30 less games). Revere also plays a better CF then both of them, will cost over 60-70million less then Bourn and is 4 years younger then Span and 5 years younger then Bourn. He also doesn't strike out as much as Bourn. There has been ppl saying that he has no arm however from what some scouts are saying his arm is average, nothing wrong with average when you can cover the ground he does. This might be the steal of the winter. |

As far as Michael Young . . . think of it this way, last year he had a down year yet still had about 170 hits and hit over .275, i'll take that. He's only a year removed from hitting .338 . . .Compare him to the last 3 regular third basemen the Phillies had before Frandsen took over last year. I'd take the 2012 Michael Young over Placido Polanco, Pedro Feliz or David Bell. Polanco never played more than 132 games and never had more than 52 RBIs in his 3 years with the Phillies. Feliz's best year had him hitting .266 with a .308 OBP and David Bell had 1 good season in his 3 1/2 years in Philly. Young will bounce back. He always does, and I "think" I heard the Phillies will only have to pay like $5.5 million of his 2013 contract. Jim Salisbury said it could be Josh Lindblom and another low level minor leaguer. With Revere only making about $500,000, that's 2 starting positions filled with $6 million. That should leave plenty of money to sign a RH corner outfielder and a veteran starting pitcher to replace Worley. Michael Young's see-saw: 2007: .315 2008: .284 2009: .322 2010: .284 2011: .338 2012: .277 Lost in the shuffle seems to be the Phillies selections in the Rule 5 Draft. They took an outfielder by the name of Ender Inciarte from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is 22, bats left and is supposed to be another very good defensive outfielder in CF. He played at A+ Visalia last year and hit .319 with 28 SB after hitting .293 with 18 SB at lower level class A South Bend to begin 2012. Seems like an extreme longshot for him to make the 25 man roster like Michael Martinez, David Herndon, etc. In the AAA phase they took LHP Brendan Lafferty from the Royals. He pitched at AA NW Arkansas last year, all in relief and went 1-1 4.77. In 60.1 IP he had 71 strikeouts. No Phillies players were selected by other teams. |

My only issue with Young is .... can he play 3B almost the whole season?
If not, whats the point? Howard dont need to sit all that much at 1B. Does he spot for Utley at 2B? Utley has proved he wont sit as much as we're told every year he will get days off LOL |

Hopefully they roll the dice with Frandsen he proved he could hit ML pitching last yr. (.338 , 195 AB)I guess Young would be an ok backup, but cant see him playing every day. Diminishing bat and not a good fielder. We would still need a power bat for the OF though. Not too much power going with Frandsen(or Young) and Revere in the lineup.

youngs offensive downside is a dream...
texas signed beltre and FORCED him out of time on the field...this guy is not a cripple i was thinking you could literally do a innings 1-7 with young and then bring in fradsen as a defensive replacement accordingly would suck for fantasy numbers but a more valuable roster spot i could not imagine |

Buc, I hope you're right.
There has to be concern though that he had not-so-good yr last season , and he's now 36. He has to slow down at some point and last yr might have been the start of it.. |
