John Jenkins has the ability to be a dominate 3-4 NT in the NFL as that is what the Bulldogs employ. If he is still on the board, I would be happy to see the Steelers take him even though they have McClendon behind Hampton. They need more depth.

NY, ESPN's clowns are so politically correct that they never want to call out teams for bad play or in this case bad drafts. That's why I stopped listening to them.

got to disagree with you somewhat - After watching Bama vs Georgia last week - I;d rather have one of the 2 interior linemen that played against Jenkins...  Barret Jones or Warmack...  Last year it was DeCastro that domintated Ta'amu - Glad we got DeCastro round 1.....

Will be interesting to watch Jones and Warmack battle Lucas Nix NT from Notre Dame in a few weeks.

Burgh I dont think he was 100%. He got hurt the week earlier against Georgia Tech because Richt kept the starters in in a blowout for some reason. I watched the 'Dawgs all season and all bias set aside, he had a phenominal season and really great career. He's got the size strength and speed to be a top interior lineman in the NFL. Once he puts it all together, he can be dominate. But depending on where they draft this year, assuming they draft late, do you think Warack or Jones will still be there?

SteelCity,

Not sure if Jones or Warmack will be on the board - I think both will...  I'll have to give Jenkins another look during there bowl game and the other place I love to see these kids (if he is a senior) is East/West Shrine practice and Senior Bowl Practice - we see them go up against some of the best talent coming out...

Burgh, he has really been one of the staples to the defense. Him and Jarvis Jones. I wish the Steelers could pick that man up but he will clearly be a top 5 pick.

Second Round OG, I like the kid out of Kentucky, Larry Warfard.  The best OG in the draft is Chance Warmack, unless the Steelers tank the rest of the season, they have no shot at him.

Unfortunately we let Ryan Lee go...  got signed off the practice squad - the kid finishes.. and is a Mauler...  needed work on lower body strength for pass blocking - but had a lot of the tools..   (see Urbik)

Here's a kid to keep an eye on....

J.C. Tretter OG/OT - Cornell - that's right an Ivy league player - think smarts...  and think about how many dumb penalties etc that our LG's (Kemo, Colon) have given us over the last couple of years..

-------------

Lattimore has had 2 major knee injuries in 2 years - I wanted draft the kid - I feel for him cause he might have been the best RB in this draft class if he would have stayed healthy..

We can wait on a RB - and I dont want to see one picked till day 3 of the draft - even then.. they can bring one in undrafted...

Two second rounders I like for OLB are Simon and Lemonier.

I'd prefer Simon between the two. The only potential linebacker from LSU that I'd like to the Steelers grab would be Minter, maybe in the 3rd? Walter mocks Okafor to us in the 1st, but I'd rather either of the two receivers drafted behind him (Williams and Allen). Round 2 is mocked TJ McDonald, meh..., not what I'm looking for with our 2nd (especially with Jesse Williams and Larry Warford drafted immediately after). 3rd round is Ryan Swope, no thanks, period.

Looking at who Walter has falling after that last pick got me thinking about 3-4 DEs and our inability to land a winner. Where does someone like Gholston translate in the NFL? DT? Too big for a DE in a 4-3, right. I really like PSU's Jordan Hill at the next level, but he seems built for the 4-3 as well. Long story short, we need to find a 3-4 DE somewhere in this next draft, imo.

I cannot argue that, I agree. Mingo and Montgomery just something about them, specifically watching Mingo get washed out, not hold the point, he is all speed to me.  John Simon is a senior and almost every draft, the Steelers take someone from Ohio State.  Corey Lemonier is a good football player on a bad team, more opponents could key on him, he still made plays. Lemonier is also a Junior, that is a trait Tomlin likes.

Hey NyB, why not put together a "Bowl Season" edition of the pre-draft scouting routine where individuals volunteer to take on positional assignments? I only mention this because it may be a welcome distraction to what could be a morose environment on these boards, depending on this Sunday's outcome.

Bowl season is a great last chance to get some game action views of many draftees. Maybe if positions are too much, how about individuals key in on certain bowl games? Just a thought. I'd be interested (hell, Spring classes usually interfere with any hope of my participating during the standard routine).

I like the idea of overlap, allowing for greater perspective. How about we don't bother with sophmores and freshman, e.g. no Clowney's and Johnny Football's?? I'll list games I look forward to seeing with prospects in mind.

Florida vs. Louisville New Orleans, LA Wed., Jan. 2 / 8:30 p.m. ESPN Reckless

If for no other reason than Matt Elam. I wanna see more of his game. From what I've gathered he's a small but plays big, always involved in the plays. I'll research other prospects, especially on the Louisville side.

Kansas State vs. Oregon Glendale, AZ Thu., Jan. 3 / 8:30 p.m. ESPN Reckless

Not too concerned about Klein, he'll be lucky to have a job shortly. I am interested in what else makes KState tick. On Oregon's side I wanna check out the lanky DE/pass-rush prospect they have. Not sure how he translates to the next level, but have seen him mocked in the 1st in some places.

Clemson vs. LSU Atlanta, GA Mon., Dec. 31 / 7:30 p.m. ESPN  nybites, Reckless

Too many prospects to mention.

Stanford vs. Wisconsin Pasadena, CA Tue., Jan. 1 / 5 p.m. ESPN  nybites, Reckless

Many possibilities here: Skov, Ertz, Thomas, Ball, to name a few.

Michigan State vs. TCU Tempe, AZ Sat., Dec. 29 / 10:15 p.m. ESPN burghball

"L. Bell RB Mich state" I agree about one last look at Bell, but I wanna check out Sims one more time as well as Gholston...TCU, I'll have to research.

2012-13 College Football Bowl Schedule

Bowl Game Matchup Location Date / Time (ET) TV

Gildan New Mexico

Arizona vs. Nevada Albuquerque, NM Sat., Dec. 15 / 1 p.m. ESPN  nybites

Mickey Baucus, T, Arizona: Baucus is a large left tackle who's developing a
complete game. He overwhelms defenders run blocking and displays next-level
pass protection skills. The red-shirt sophomore is a two-year starter and
will only improve with experience and maturity. 3rd Round

Duke Williams, DB, Nevada: Few defensive backs in the nation come with the
measurables offered by Williams. He's a 200-pound safety who runs the 40 in
4.4 seconds and has the ability to line up over slot receivers. Williams can
be used at safety, nickel cornerback and play special teams in the NFL. 4th
Round

Dan Buckner, WR, Arizona: Buckner is a large, dependable possession receiver
who consistently comes away with the difficult reception or wins out in
battles. He projects as a fourth receiver at the next level and can help any
team on third down or in the red zone. 5th/6th Round

Zach Sudfeld, TE, Nevada: Sudfeld missed the 2011 season with a leg injury,
but returned in prime form this season. His 6-foot-6 frame stands out on the
field, and his average of 13 yards on 43 receptions is a testament to his
athleticism. Sudfled is a three-down tight end with the ability to
eventually develop into a starter at the next level. 6th Round

Famous Idaho Potato

Toledo vs. Utah State Boise, ID Sat., Dec. 15 / 4:30 p.m. ESPN burghall

#22 David Fuellin RB Toledo - and I know there are a couple form Utah State

Idaho Potato: Toledo vs Utah State
Will Davis, CB, Utah State: Davis entered the season graded out as a free
agent, but his game has taken off as a senior. He's developed into a
dominant cornerback and consistently shut down opponents last season. He
possesses the size, athleticism and skills to develop into a starter on the
NFL level. 1st/2nd Round

Kerwynn Williams, RB, Utah State: Williams was listed third on the Utah
State depth chart last season, but turned in a career campaign in 2012. He's
a multi-purpose skill player who creates yardage as a ball carrier or
produces as a pass catcher. Williams approaches April as one of the better
third-down backs available in the draft. 4th/5th Round

David Fluellen, RB, Toledo: Fluellen was one of the nation's most prolific
ball carriers this season, registering 1,460 rushing yards and 13 scores.
He's a well-sized running back with terrific quickness and vision. The
junior offers the skills to eventually develop into a feature runner at the
next level. 4th Round

San Diego County CU Poinsettia

BYU vs. San Diego State San Diego, CA Thu., Dec. 20 / 8 p.m. ESPN - burghball

Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU: Ansah came to BYU from Ghana as a track and field
athlete, then turned to football two years ago. He initially needed
assistance on how to properly put on his equipment, but has since developed
into a feared defensive lineman who can rush the passer or play in space.
Scouts are in love with his upside and feel the sky is the limit. 1st/2nd
Round   WATCH this kid

Gavin Escobar, TE, SDSU: Escobar is another talented athlete developing into
a complete player on the football field. He's well built, with the ability
to consistently make plays down the field as a pass catcher. Escobar's
blocking significantly improved this season, and scouts feel the junior has
the ability to start in the NFL. 2nd Round

Kyle Van Noy, LB, BYU: The junior linebacker is a three-down defender who
makes plays everywhere on the field. He's a stout run defender who also
effectively shuts down tight ends or running backs in coverage. Van Noy
comes with the potential to be used at several linebacker spots in a variety
of defensive systems. 2nd Round

Leon McFadden, CB, SDSU: McFadden offers NFL size, which he combines with
top ball skills to shut down opponents. He's efficient in all aspects of the
game, and can line up in man coverage as well as zone. The senior cornerback
entered the season with mid-round grades, but has jumped into the second day
of April's draft. 3rd Round

Beef 'O' Brady's

Ball State vs. UCF St. Petersburg, FL Fri., Dec. 21 / 7:30 p.m. ESPN

R+L Carriers New Orleans

East Carolina vs. UL Lafayette New Orleans, LA Sat., Dec. 22 / 12 p.m. ESPN

Melvin White, CB, La-Lafayette: Scouts have a higher grade on White than his
former teammate Dwight Bentley, the third-round pick of the Detroit Lions in
the 2012 draft. White offers outstanding size, plays a tough brand of
football and consistently has opposing quarterbacks throwing away from him.
He's one of the better sleepers at cornerback. 3rd Round

Justin Hardy, WR, East Carolina*: The red-shirt sophomore has combined for
147 receptions, 1,704 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns the past two
seasons. He's a well-rounded pass catcher who consistently finds the soft
spot in the defense. Hardy projects as a fourth wide out on the NFL level.
5th/6th Round

Cordian Hagans, DT, La-Lafayette: The athletic Hagans has displayed flashes
of skill the past two seasons, but has fallen short of expectations and does
not play at a high level consistently. Scouts love his upside and feel he
offers the potential to line up in a number of defensive schemes at the next
level. 7th Round

MAACO Bowl Las Vegas

Boise State vs. Washington Las Vegas, NV Sat., Dec. 22 / 3:30 p.m. ESPN nybites

Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington: The latest addition from the Trufant
household to enter the professional ranks, Desmond has been a consistent
starter the past three seasons. He possesses terrific ball skills and plays
with good instinct. Trufant offers the ability to line up as a No. 2
cornerback in the NFL. 3rd Round

Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State: Taylor watched his game take off this season,
and played well beyond the expectations of NFL scouts. He's a shutdown
cornerback with a feisty style, battling to defend passes or working hard to
stop the run. Taylor is also player who will lend a hand on special teams in
the NFL. 4th Round

Jerrell Gavins, CB, Boise State: Gavins' skills on the field match any of
the other cornerbacks mentioned. He's a tough defender with terrific ball
skills. He's also constantly around the action making positive plays and
does not back down to a challenge. His slight frame (5-8 and 170 pounds) is
the only limitation to his game. 5th Round

2009 Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper Sucks Thread

Of note - more senior bowl accepts:

Kiko Alonso LB Oregon  - I liked this kid last year...
Khaseem Greene LB Rutgers  - the one game I watched - didn't stand out
Jordan Hill DT  Penn State - Like this kid - saw a lot of PSU games but fit is the question - thinking more of a 4-3 DT
JC Tretter OG Cornell  <--- the ivy league kid I mentioned before
Ricky Wagner OT Wisconsin <----  yet another OL player from the Badgers
Larry Warford OG Kentucky <---  ny posted about this kid

there were 13 total that accepted on 12/12/12..  those are just a few...

This is the time for Larry Warfard to shine, the combine will help but won't do more than game tape. Kentucky was sucky this year, no bowl game for his team. So Larry needs to kick butt and take names at the Senior Bowl.

NY,

Interesing enough was watching the BUNGALS vs Eagles last night - that Brandon Graham kid is really starting to play like we thought he would - he had some injuries but also - bone head coaching and I still think he is in the wrong system...

That senior bowl is huge for some of these kids.. the smaller school invites as well as the Warfard's that come off these non-bowl -losing records schools rosters..

I think the Steelers are going to have to look for more options at CB in the draft this year. Curtis Brown is a HUGE diappointment, Cortez may get better like Keenan ( surprisingly ) but overall the Steelers need upgrades at CB. Check out Jordan Poyer's  ( Oregon ST )resume. 7 int's in 2012.
More than likely he will be at the Senior bowl so we can get a good look at him. Johnthan banks ( Mississsippi ST )is also a senior so he should be there as well, 2 of the top 5 CB's coming out are seniors with experience.

Agreed [don't go into shock breed!]

I had high hopes for Brown, but the kid is dumb as a rock.  All the physical skills, but I worry about his football IQ.  I like Cortez Allen and think he'll be a good player moving forward, but Ike Taylor won't be around forever and even if Lewis and Allen make a good starting pair, this defense needs to have 4 solid CBs on the roster.

I would have no problem with taking a CB in the first 3 rounds.
