One matchup I hope to see is Brian Winters vs. John Simon in the Senior Bowl practices, both players from Ohio, will be on the same team.  Aaron Mellette has commited to play in the Senior Bowl, I hope he shows a spark, but not too much fire.  Wink  The other OL I want to see is the OG out of Kentucky, Larry Warford. LIke Simon, his team is not playing in a  bowl game, this is his shot to make a move.

seniorbowl.com  you can check back to see who is  playing, they update once in a while, but not consistently. They promised an update 2 days ago, Dec. 19th, and I have not seen chit posted yet.  Frown

2009 Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper Sucks Thread

The Steelers NEED AT least 1 early round OLB, CB, SS, it pains me to say DL, OT, Hybrid OG/OC/OT ( Barret Jones ) an ILB who can lead the front 7 when Foote retires and for now play on 1st, 2nd and short yardage 3rd down to help Foote stop the run ( CC might fit if he can get healthy ). Also a legitimate backup QB. They can wait till the middle rounds to get another RB, WR, TE, and FS. Late rounds are ST players.
----------------------------

I think that list is on the money breed - but the word NEED bothers me...  They need to continue to draft best player available as much as possible - getting the highest rated - best value for the spot they are picking from...  If it happens to be a position of NEED - all the better...  For the most part the Steelers have done a fantastic job with that philosophy.

I'm  big on Barret Jones also - he can play all 5 spots (maybe not LT at the NFL level but I see him toward the back end of the first round  and I think we will be picking around 20 (we currently sit at the #17 pick)...

Going to be interesting..

enjoy,

I think it is sceem and the fact we don't have an identity on offence any more.
I would like to see us use a zone blocking sceem and more two back formations.
Defencive fronts are to quick for a pulling guard to get to the second level.
Put a hat on a hat, and a full back on a LB'r and you have a hole.

With this season down the toilet, I'd like to volunteer my services to scout linebackers like I did a few years ago if the spot isn't taken.  You all know that I know my stuff and can count on me for solid, reliable information without any of the extracurricular stuff that went down between a few of us once upon a time.

My secondary choice is safeties if someone is already assigned to LBs.

Where is Te'o prejected to be picked? If we lose against the Browns we could reach 13th pick in this draft.

I still have QBs, will take WR if need be under whatever name I can keep.

I like the kid out of K State, Collin Klein as a late round backup.

correction on Phillip Thomas, he is playing right now for Freso State, I had him marked down for SD State. No wonder nobody saw anything, when I asked the question if anyone saw anything special? Aa  Thomas has 8 picks for the season, but I am cautious of the stats because I watched a WR split the two DB's and burned Thomas for a  TD.  The same way I wanted that FS out of UCLA, Rahim Moore, he is having a solid second season and is starting ahead of Jim Leonhard, a veterean.  The Steelers need DB's who can pick the ball off. The knock on Moore was he was soft, well throw that out theory the window, he is a guided missle.

I can start throwing names into a hat, round by round, anyone else can stab at it, be my guest. Assume we are picking in the middle of each round. I will give 5 names for each of the 7 rounds, 35 total.

Round one

Keenan Allen
Jesse Williams
Johnathon Banks
DeMontre Moore
Chance Warmack

Round Two

John Simon
Corey Lemonier
Justin Hunter
Cordarelle Patterson
Kevin Minter

Round Three

Larry Warford
Robert Lester
Montee Ball
Alex Olgletree
Sean Porter

Round Four

Margus Hunt
Stepfan Taylor
Blidi Wreh-Wilson
Trevardo Williams
Jordan Matthews

Round FIve

Kenjon Barner
Johnathon Franklin
Xavier Nixon
Kevin Riddick
Micah Hyde

Round Six

Aaron Mellette
Collin Klein
Marquess Wilson
Jake Stoneburner
Greg Blair

RE: The Steelers need DB's who can pick the ball off.

Jordan Poyer CB Oregan State 2nd in the nation for int's. Very athletic used to be a QB. He's a SR and will likely be in the Senior Bowl so we will get to see him against some of the best from college. After watching Curtis Brown I'm convinced the combine means nothing.

Jamie Collins OLB Southern Miss good size ( 6-3 240 )and speed mid round pick. Steelers need LB competition although I know Tomlin likes little speedy LB's who get run over.

Looking at the possible standings if we lose to the Browns, there is a chance we could pick as high as #11. If we can get there I can see a chance at Te'o. We got to close our eyes and lose to the Browns.

Gidion,

As much as I want to move up in the draft, do you really think being swept by Cleveland is anything positive?

Merry Christmas.

back to that safety from Freso State, I saw him miss an easy open field tackle, ON THE QUARTERBACK.  Surprised

Looking at the standings there is a lot of teams with a possible 7-9 record. If we win we move back about 7-8 spots in the draft. I don't want to lose to the Browns trust me on that, but maby it would be a wake up call to the Roonies, Tomlin, the team and we could get a couple of players who could make an imediate impact next year. We may have to get a replacement for miller now too.

Maybe the Roonies would light a fire under Tomlin's rearend and he in turn would light one under the rest of the coaching staff and the players. If we beat the Browns they actually may just write it off to injuries, but if we lose the Roonies will be totally pissed and make something possitive happen. Losing to them could be the best thing for next season in reality.

Walter has us getting Mingo at #14.

and I think he has the wrong motor and body type. more of a lean mean sacking machine that takes plays and games off, his stock will drop as GM's and scouts look at  tape. I also think teams that properly grade players will drop Eric Reid as well. I am not talking a full round, but maybe a half round for these guys. Don't forget Walter, Draftscout, Draftek are all speculative. They are maybe a level higher than us because of the time and data, but they almost never match the actual grades by each team. And for the record this group  gets just as much right as they do and obviously Mel Kiper still sucks at his job. If this was the only thing I did, I would kick his ass so high up, he would have to take his shirt off to s.hit.

Did anyone else watch that Hawaii Bowl?  I still don't see the second round grade on Phillip Thomas or the fourth round grade on Margus Hunt. Sure one game but Hunt was unblockable at one point two OL and a FB hit him and he still made a play. Granted the OT was undersized, but still he has that motor, wingspan, is a world class discus thrower and still learning football, ceiling is unlimited IMHO. He is 6-8 280 and runs a 4.6 40 yard dash, again 4th round grade seems low, maybe level of competition... however Jason Pierre-Paul played at South Florida, not exactly the SEC.  Undecided

A game I will be taping, especially with the injury to Heath Miller. Yell

Belk Bowl, December 27th at 6:30 PM, my key player to watch is Travis Kelce.  Initially I liked Dion Sims and his size, but after watching the Michigan State game, not overally impressed.  What we have on the roster is Heath and some backups, they are good at one thing, but not a complete TE like Miller. Paulson  runs good routes, blocks like crap. DJ Johnson is a bull, he will fight for that FB job next year. Leonard Pope I don't see back, marginal blocker, played ST mostly, they put Paulson in ahead of him, so that makes him 3rd on the depth chart.  And when we were in the red zone, how many times was Pope even on the field, let alone targeted?

Tonight is the LIttle Ceasar's Bowl, a few guys to watch, nobody that will be drafted top 75 with the exception of the OT Eric Fisher. Someone to watch on Duke is the QB Sean Renfree. This is a deep draft for backup QB, I see the Steelers taking a shot on someone. Batch will be holding a clipboard in 2013, or catching a tan while playing the Blue Monster also known as Doral.

Margus Hunt just may  have played himself into a top 40 pick, IMHO. What team would not want him? He can play DE, the 5, and he is only going to get better.

Gidion,

Te'o is a top 7 pick, barring injury or a pedestrian time at the combine.

Watching SMU vs. Fresno State...

Margus Hunt, DE,  what can you say other than WOW.

Another kid making a splash, Alston, CB FResno, just got his second pick,

Taylor Reed LB SMU,  with pick 6, really good and drop and he read Derek Carr's eyes.

BTW neither QB is worth spit, but Carr, like his brother, blowz.
