Detroit Red Wings

I started talking about it last year and got smashed pretty good on these boards for saying it but in my opinion the Wings are going to be in some serious trouble in the not too distant future.  I want so badly to be wrong and for Wings fans on these boards to be right but I just don't see it.   Although the Wings failures the last couple post seasons are not his fault  I'm still not convinced we have a top notch Stanley Cup capable goalie in Detroit.  And if they don't play this year Howard's contract is up, he's an UFA next summer.

The defense scares the crap out of me.  I don't trust Quincey, not one bit.  I don't like Kindl AT ALL.  I'm not sure what we have with Brendan Smith.  I thought Colaiacovo was a very good signing at a more then fair price but is he a top 4 dman?  Ericsson I was always a fan of but although he had a bit of a comeback season last year is he ever going to take the next step and become a real top 2 or 4 guy?  Also one more thing to remember about the Wings D.  As of right now the Wings only have on dman signed past the 2013-2014 season, and that's Kronwall.

Offensively assuming this season is history Datsyuk only has 1 more year left on his deal and Filpula has nothing left after this season. They only have 5 forwards signed past the 2013-2014 season, 6 players in total not counting a bunch of kids in the minors on entry level or two day deals.  Zetterberg has many years left on his deal but is he going to be the same player 2 or 3 years from now? Highly unlikely in my opinion.  In my opinion Franzen is regressing and nowhere near the player he once was.

I know Wings fans on these boards will for the most part completely disagree with most of what I just said but I think it's time the Wings re-tool.  Last year I suggested trading Datsyuk and people thought I was half retarded for suggesting they do that but I think the return for Datsyuk right now would still be incredible and his future performance will not improve but he will regress.  I think the return for Franzen's cap hit friendly deal would be far more then he's actually worth today on the ice.  I think Jimmy Howard a year ago would have been a very marketable player.  I think Filpulla would have been very marketable and still could be if they got back on the ice this year and traded him before he becomes an UFA.   My fear is Holland will do nothing I just suggested be done.  My fear is he'll sign all of the above players I mentioned just to stay "competitive" and pretend the Wings can contend for a cup when in reality I knew in my heart 2 years ago there wasn't another cup coming to Detroit anytime soon with the current players on the roster.

I would much rather receive full or even above value for the players I mentioned and risk ending the incredible playoff streak the Wings have going then watch these players either expire in Detroit or regress because the end result will still mean the streak ending but there will be no light at the end of the tunnel when in fact getting great value in return just might set the Wings up for many more contending years down the road.

Defenseman Ouellet is on Team Canada roster and is the one best defenseman in all the CHL and will probably fast track his way to Detroit like Smith has. I feel good about our future with what I've seen from both so far.

Whose that goalie we drafted, Petersen that plays for Saginaw Spirit of the OHL. He was just behind Subban and Binnington on the Team Canada goalie depth roster for the World Juniors so that says a lot about how good that kid is and trending to be.
McCollum has a lot to prove in Grand Rapids in net.

Trade Pavel, lol. This team will be good for a long time and keep reloading. Drink your shirley temple and cheer up ya doomsday nut.

The speedy talented forward pipeline still excellent coming our way from our scouts in Sweden and that Finland prospect I got high hopes for too.

I know Pavel being traded isn't going to happen.  I was trying to think outside the box a little bit and figure out a way the Wings could stock up some talent for the future instead of letting players stock decrease year after year and get nothing in return for them.

I was looking at the Wings prospects online.  On defense it's better then i thought but I don't share your optimism with talent I see coming up through the ranks offensively.  I hope I'm wrong but I don't see very much.

I'm curious to see when the dust settles from the CBA. I think you may se a lot less movement on the free agent market and more of the sign and trade type deals just like the NBA.......which ironically is where the moron commissioner earned his stripes. As much as holland has sat on his arse for the last few years I suspect he'll be lazy and just ride this out. He signed too many guys to long term backended deals that no team is gonna want to be saddled with. And with a new stadium in the works I predict he doesn't do much of anything until we get closer to the new arena gets built- then he'll try to make a big splash like the tigers did with comerica in getting that terd Juan Gonzalez

If i'm Ken Holland, one of the first things i do is try and tempt Nick Lidstrom into playing, since its a shortened season. I know its very unlikely, but I would at least try . Id even tell him if he plays we would let ole granny legs Holmstrom play too .

The way things are now. Eaves isnt going to be back playing anytime soon. I liked him in  a Wings jersey . Let him get back to 100% . I think this is the last year of his contract . Lets sign him cheaper to a new deal next year  and hope he can be what he was before his injury .

Your probably right Bill...cant rush things.

Pavel Datsyuk is going to play in the KHL All-Star game Sunday. He better get to Detroit in one piece.

Mike Babcock says he's playing Henrik Zetterberg and Datsyuk together on the first line with Damien Brunner on the right side. That sounds like a very explosive line.

I hate when coaches already have their minds made up about the lines. Granted Babcock knows most of his players but who's to say that someone won't come in and knock his socks off and has drastically be improved or slowed down? Not to mention he's never even coached Brunner.

matty, let's see what happens. i think there's a lot of difference between "i'm gonna play these guys together" and "i'm gonna play these guys together regardless of what happens, and i'll never change my mind about it". ;)

he's got to start somewhere. since he's never coached brunner, what should he do? just let him sit on the bench?

I'm a fan of Eaves gutsy playing style too. Wings PK was a rancid 18th last season without him.

Patrick Eaves has been cleared for contact, though even Eaves isn't sure whether his post-concussive headaches are gone for good:

"It felt good, and I can do whatever we do out there," Eaves said. "It's more than anything I could have done out there a little while ago. It's a step forward and I just have to keep making progress."

Tom Renney as our new associate coach, a title that previously was just called "assistant coach" hopefully allows him to make changes to our crappy PP 22nd ranked last year and PK units. This team will miss the playoffs if they can't improve their special team units.

We haven't had a pest that buzzed around the ice since I think Sean Avery was a Wing briefly. Looking forward to Tootoo running clowns wreaking havoc.

Read Ilitch waving ticketmaster fees for Wings games sold in first 36 hours, boo. I don't buy my tickets from those price gouging crooks named ticketmaster so this news means nothing to me.
No news yet on free NHL Centre Ice. Owners and NHL front office  still owe us fans a lot more than ticket price fees and weak sorry.

Tom Renney as our new associate coach,
I should have talked about this hire more.

The guy has never finished above 3rd in his division.   He has one only 2 career playoff series.   He moved the Oilers from fun bad to crap on skates.    I'm not sure how he's been able to hang around the league behind a bench for so long.    Seems like the type of resume that gets a guy moved to a different front office position or something.

Anyway, maybe he could help out the special teams, but I'm not sure I would want a guy that's been around egos and kids to an organization of true professionals.

The Red Wings and their AHL-affiliate, Grand Rapids Griffins, will hold a Red-White scrimmage on Tuesday night, which is free to the public, at 3,500-seat Compuware Arena in suburban Detroit.

The scrimmage will feature 38 players – that’s 19 on each squad – from the parent club as well as minor-leaguers, who have played this season in the American Hockey League.(DetroitRedWings.com)

Sounds like some fun to me. Hope none of the Griffins injure any Red Wings. That would not be cool.

LOL...Yes, I was refering to the future vs. the current parent club members.

'Z' gets the 'C'. Only the 3rd team captain the Wings have had since 1986...36th over-all.

Now...beat the Blues this Saturday.

After pulling a muscle in his back Thursday, Darren Helm has not been on the ice again with his teammates. With Helm likely unavailable, Justin Abdelkader is expected to center the Wings' checking line against the Blues on Saturday.

because of the head injury still?

I love Patrick Eaves' game. Ive seen almost all of BC's hockey games over the past 15 years (aside from my 4 yrs in college) and I Patrick Eaves is my favorite of all the players in taht time. Maybe not the most skilled but such a hard nosed player.
