Lurie FINALLY put on his big boy pants,Reid fired

December 31, 2012 8:49 pm

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.—For the first time in 14 years, Philadelphia Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie will have to find a new head coach. It’s an unimaginable time frame for an NFL owner to go between coaching searches, but the time had come. Lurie had said before the season that an 8-8 mark wouldn’t be enough for Andy Reid to see his 15th season in Philadelphia. The Eagles won half that amount and finished with their worst record ever under Reid, leaving the owner with no choice but to dismiss the franchise leader in regular-season and playoff victories . Lurie has generally made the right call on his two head coaching hires—Ray Rhodes in 1995 and Reid four years later. At the time, Rhodes was considered a rising assistant from the Mike Holmgren coaching tree, which branched out from the Bill Walsh tree. Reid also came from the Holmgren line and had never ascended higher than quarterbacks coach, which reflected Lurie’s willingness to take risks and gamble on unproven talent. But the game has changed since 1999 and the Eagles have played 52 seasons without winning an NFL championship, which means Lurie’s criteria for his next head coach could be radically different. It appears as if general manager Howie Roseman will play a major role in the interview process, but the call will ultimately be Lurie’s. Five candidates for the job: Oregon coach Chip Kelly. The catchiest candidate from the college ranks is also the biggest enigma. Oregon has emerged as a national powerhouse under Kelly, 49, an offensive mastermind who many have called a visionary. The Ducks are 45-7 under Kelly and have made a BCS bowl game in each of his four seasons as head coach. His spread offenses are built around speed, pace and maximization of space, and he’s been a consultant to Bill Belichick and the Patriots.

Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. Lurie has an excellent relationship with agent Bob LaMonte, who represents Reid, Roseman and a dozen other coaches and executives with ties to either Reid or the Eagles. LaMonte’s representatives include the 40-year-old McCoy, who helped Denver go two rounds deep into the playoffs last year with a read-option scheme he designed on the fly to fit Tim Tebow. This year, the Broncos won 13 games and the AFC’s No. 1 seed with a completely different offense that fit the talents of Peyton Manning. Former NFL coach Steve Marriucci. Word is that “Mooch” wants to get back into coaching after several years of working for the NFL Network. Mariucci (72-67 overall in the NFL) had four seasons of double-digit wins and two division titles as head coach of the 49ers from 1997 to 2002. He moved on to Detroit, where he was 15-28 from 2003 to 2005. Like Reid, Marriucci, 57, is a proponent of the West Coast offense and has roots in the Bill Walsh/Mike Holmgren tree. Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. The Falcons were known as soft and vanilla—especially on offense—until Koetter, 53, came over from Jacksonville and took control of Atlanta’s offense. In his first season, Koetter has opened up the scheme and led Atlanta to top-five rankings in completion percentage, passing touchdowns, completion percentage and yards per attempt. Koetter helped start the rise of Boise State, which went 26-10 and won two bowl games with Koetter as head coach from 1998 to 2000. He then went 40-34 in six seasons as Arizona State’s head coach. Koetter and Reid are old buds who coached together at three different spots. Eagles defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. It’s unlikely that Lurie plucks from within but he’s very fond of Bowles, who was initially hired to coach the secondary before being promoted to defensive coordinator in the middle of this season. Lurie is impressed with Bowles’ football IQ and could feasibly decide that the defense’s problems this season weren’t an accurate reflection of Bowles’ coaching acumen given the season-long turmoil on Reid’s staff. The Dolphins promoted Bowles to interim head coach near the end of the 2011 season—after firing Tony Sparano—and Bowles went 2-1.

Somewhere the Blindfaithful is gushing tears like Niagara Falls! I'm sure they will be throwing around their favorite two lines as everyone celebrates the New Year and the end of Fat Andy reign in Philadelphia. What are their two favorite lines you ask? 1. Andy Reid will get hired fast and be successful somewhere else. I say, SO WHAT! Let him use that pass happy offense against the Eagles and they will crush him everytime! 2. Do you remember the years under Ray Rhodes and Rich Kotite, do you want to go back to that? I say, SHUT UP! Reid was successful during his first 5 years as coach as he feasted on the weak NFC east but the other teams got better and Reid's teams got worse. He's never learned how to run a championship type of offense and it appears that he will never learn so it was his time to move on. I could care less about the QB situation because that was NEVER the biggest issue here, it was the HC and his coaching staff and front office gurus like our wonderful GM who can't evaluate talent and treated this team TOO much like a business thus the players started doing the same. Don't want to tackle because they may get hurt and the Eagles will cut them, don't want to extend myself on offense (DeSean) because I might get hurt and can't live out my contract. The front office treated this team like a business and now the players are doing it too. Andy is gone, now they have to clean out his staff (Marty) and bring in a whole new staff and get rid of players playing for contracts and not wins. We don't need people like that in this town, we want our teams to represent us the working class, not their wallets. Reid was the first to go, hopefully other unachievers on his staff follow suit.

treated this team TOO much like a business thus the players started doing the same.
The Pats, Giants, Packers, and Steelers ALL treat the team like a business, ruthless at times in regards to players in treating them as very replaceable. And guess what they all have in common?

Way too much to read but I agree this move was way overdue. Reid IMO was very overrated. Imo he was an awful gameday coach and made alot of headscratching player/personnel moves. I think JJ was much more responsible for the Eagles success the past 14 yrs in spite of Reid.
Classy stuff by Reid adressing his team before he left.
Eagles need to clean house and start over even if it means a couple of more 4-12 seasons.

Sorry all-pgh, I'm having posting issues here on CBS and the only way I can post without computer jargon mixed in my comments is to leave no spaces like paragraphs. It still doesn't work out well if I'm copying and pasting an article like I did in my opening comments. CBS cut off half my post so I had to make a second post to complete my opening statement. Anyway, I agree with everything you said about Reid being overrated because he is. This team really did go in the toilet after JJ died and Brian Dawkins left for Denver. Great post by CentralMass as well. That was a telling statement by LeSean McCoy and Michael Vick, but if you watched the games you can see that it's obvious these guys are playing for contracts not wins (Iggy and Elton Brand did the same thing on the Sixers) so the new coach and his staff will have to clean house and get rid of these players if they want to turn this team around. And finally to Scuba....for the love of GOD would you please STOP comparing the Eagles to the Packers and the Patriots!!! Those teams won Super Bowls and the Eagles have NOT, until they won one please stop putting them in the same catagory of the other 2 teams mentioned, your comment is as pathetic as Lurie's "Gold Standard" speech. Do you honestly believe that the Eagles are as success as the Patriots and Packers???? Are you that blind? Sorry, I forgot that I was dealing with the BLINDfaithful so scratch that last question.
I'm not comparing them. I'm just showing you how DUMB these complaints are that the Eagles treat their players like a business. The BEST franchises do that. So yes, I'm saying the Eagles have the right philosophy.

How do you want the Eagles to run the team? Just hand out extensions and long term deals to old guys because they've "earned it" by being here a long time? Yeah, that will really work out well.
Do you honestly believe that the Eagles are as success as the Patriots and Packers???? Are you that blind? Sorry, I forgot that I was dealing with the BLINDfaithful so scratch that last question.
Nope. I just think the Eagles have the right philosophy in terms of treating players as replaceable parts. The only area where the Eagles differ from those teams is that they rely too much on FA. Yet people on here bitch about that too that the Eagles never spend any money on FAs, which is is of course completely false.

THIS is where the Eagles philosophy has failed. They need to focus completely on the draft and just stay out of FA and not fall for the big ticket items. Of course, that WINNING strategy would only lead people to bitch and moan that the Eagles are cheap and only care about sales and blah blah blah. Have you noticed how the Pats haven't won a SB since they've become bigger players in the FA market? Not a coincidence.

But go ahead and tell me the way to win is just by running a balanced offense.

Lol, "and there you have it folks" truth bringing another awful argument about Reid and his tenure. Reid finds a job within a week of being fired because he is an astounding coach. There are three reasons he failed: an injured o line the last two years, Michael Vick, hiring Castillo as the D coordinator. That is it, I believe he became more arrogant after his success in Philly and assumed he could train any coach to understand aspects of football they do not have experience in. But, we will see, this Reid argument has been exhausted and we will see how he does in Arizona, I would bet well.

Well, well, if it isn't Crzy Joe Banner. How's Cleveland these days? It seems to me that you are STILL blind to the obvious facts. You actually believe that Michael Vick and Castillo were his only failures??? What are you delusional??? Who thought it was good ideal to use Greg Lewis as a punt returner because the birds didn't need to go out and get a REAL punt returner? Who didn't value a fullback but sat there and watched his team fail to get short yardage time and time again? Who also didn't value LBs and brought in a Defensive line coach who's scheme is geared towards strong LBer play? Who put together this house of cards Oline that falls over with a still wind. You guess it....Fat boy Andy. He handpicked those coaches that you stated that he could not train, so he's not to blame for that as well? When are fools like you going to realize that Andy Reid was at his better when he had JJ as a defensive coordinators and dedicated players like Dawkins, Runyan and Tra Thomas. Once all those guys left, Reid got exposed for the overrated coach that he is. He didn't delevop SQUAT! Ray Rhodes guys and JJ carried this team and now they are all gone and finally so is Reid. God bless him in Arizona, the same team that got suckered in for that Kolb deal now brings in the coach who hoodwinked them. He must just do well the first season or two since the division is sooooo weak (like NFC east when he first arrived) but after the other teams catch up with him it's over for fat boy. I hope the runningbacks are prepared to see less action as Kolb or whoever will be told to throw, throw and throw some more regardless of who they're playing. Just because he got another job doesn't mean he's sooo great, if that's the case then Norv Turner is the greatest thing since slice bread because he fails everywhere he goes yet he continues to get head coaching jobs. The one good thing about Reid getting a new job is that there's one team we are guaranteed to beat because their offense will be soooooooooo predictable....mark my words!

Actually, only the 49ers are a legitimate team that overrated division, the Seattle Seahawks are working on smoke and mirrors. I don't think they will last long in the playoffs....they never do. The only thing DUMB is your constant debate over a balanced offense over a pass only offense. The Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl in a game that they passed more than they ran the ball and I'm well aware of that but I'm also aware that all the games leading up to the Super Bowl were balanced offenses. I guess you forgot how the rookie Starks ran all over us and we haven't heard much of him since. Running the ball controls the clock and keeps strong offenses on the sidelines, all the smart coaches know this but overrated idiot coaches and the fools that follow them blindly seem to miss that part. Maybe the new coach will run a REAL offense designed to attack the other team's weakness and fools like you can run to Arizona and root for them and watch them get slaughter when they face the Eagles.

That's intelligent. Just say the Seahawks suck because they haven't won anything in their history. The Seahawks are one of the better teams in the NFL right now. They have a stud RB, a QB who is playing great, and a great defense. Yeah, what a crap team. It's comments like these that destroy your credibility.

It's nothing more than the ravings of a bitter fan who is already looking to make excuses if Andy does well in Arizona.

I also remember the Eagles being completely incapable of stopping the run. So that was not shocking.

You mean like what the SEAHAWKS DO?? Didn't you just tell me they SUCK? God God man. Since a balanced offense is the key (and apparently that doesn't apply to Seattle), why don't you tell me who you think will do well in the playoffs this year?

It is intelligent...more intelligent than that BS you post about this being a passing league. As I stated, the Seahawks are working on smoke and mirrors. Like the Eagles, they never won a Super Bowl and get exposed in the playoffs. Mark my works the Seahawks will not go very far in the playoffs. Regarding the Eagles, yes they couldn't stop the run which leads to my point, thank you very much. If your opponent can't stop the run why would you design 50 passing plays if opposition's weakness is stopping the run? Green Bay which is a passing team identified that and ran a rookie RB right down their thoats, would Andy Reid do this if he knew his opponent was weak against the run? Only the greater fools would say yes. And that brings me to you Scuba (who likes to exaggerate my balanced offense comment) If we are facing a team that's ranked 3rd against the pass but 27th against the run should we A. pass 50-60 times because the greater fools says it's a passing league or B. Run the ball and exploit their weakness? Let's see if you can give me a knowledgeable answer and not that BS the Eagles PR people tell you to say.

And yet you offer no explanation why. You just saying they are smoke and mirrors doesn't make it true. How about saying something to, oh I don't know, BACK IT UP. They have all the components of a team that can have great success in the postseason. I'm not saying they will, but they have the parts. And they run that balanced offense you say is so key to success. No offense, but saying they have no shot because they haven't won a SB before is an idiot's argument. If that were the case, why even bother watching the Eagles anymore?
If we are facing a team that's ranked 3rd against the pass but 27th against the run should we A. pass 50-60 times because the greater fools says it's a passing league or B. Run the ball and exploit their weakness?
Depends. Always does, and that's a concept you haven't grasped. I can't answer that question without seeing how the game unfolds or knowing more info about the opponent. The plan would likely be to run the ball more, but there is so much more that goes into that thought process of simply looking at their run/pass ranks, which are HORRIBLE marks to go by. Total yardage ranks are EASILY manipulated and EASILY misrepresented to paint an inaccurate picture.

Not even Reid says to himself I'm going to plan on throwing the ball 60 times every game. Talk about exaggeration of you constantly saying Reid throws 50-60 times per game. The times the Eagles DO throw that much is often because they have been playing from behind, and NOT by design.

You want me to back it up eh Scuba? When was the last time a rookie QB won a Super Bowl? They had some wins against the Packers, Patriots and the 49ers but that could be deceiving. The 49ers beat them and then the Seahawks beat them on Week 16 at a time when the 49ers had nothing to play for and the Packers in the beginning of the season were caught napping. No excuse for the Patriot loss but I'm sure it won't happen again in the playoffs because now they have film on them and we all know how well they study film legally and illegally. As I stated, they will get exposed in the playoffs....they always do, just like the Eagles. By the way, you didn't answer question with a knowledgeable answer. All you did was dance around it my question to avoid giving me the obvious answer. Typical of the Blindfaithful. So when will you start buying Cardinals jerseys and buying tickets to fly out to Arizona and watch your heartthrob ruin another team?

The Colts and Skins? No way. They have way too many holes. The Seahawks do have a shot, though. They have all the tools needed to win a SB. Plus, they run that balanced offense you love so much.

I'm just appalled at your stupidity on this. So the Niners knew that the Packers would lose in Week 17 and that they would also win? WOW. They are just amazing to know what the future holds. If the game was so meaningless, the Niners would have rested their starters. That game was EXTREMELY important to them. If either the Packers win or Niners lose the following week, then the Niners lose their first round bye. Not only that, they could have lost the division as well.

Yes, actually they were. You mean like the Niners probably expected to beat the Rams both times? Oh wait, I forgot they didn't even beat the lowly Rams ONCE. Any NFL team that ever takes a game for granted is in trouble. You NEVER take a game for granted in the NFL. Give me a freaking break. You have no clue what you are talking about.

Plus, you also ignored the fact that the Niners still needed the Packers to lose to get the bye. That loss meant the Niners needed HELP to get the bye. They lost control of their own destiny, but it's very cute that you think the Niners knew the Packers were going to lose to the Vikings.

Maybe you are right, Truth. I just found a transcript from what was said in the Niner's lockerroom after the loss to Seattle in Week 16.

HARBAUGH: Great effort out there guys! We need to save that energy for the playoffs. No biggie here. Meaningless game just like I said all week.

WILLIS: I don't know, Coach. Are you sure about this? I mean, we hate those guys and they're only a half game behind us now. And the Packers are ahead of us too.

HARBAUGH: Don't worry, Patrick. We play the Cards next week, and they're barely a high school team.

WILLIS: But Coach, we took it easy against the Rams both times and we didn't win either game. Are you sure about this? They don't say "Any Given Sunday" for no reason.

HARBAUGH: Any Given Sunday, Schmany Schmiven Schmunday.

WILLIS: Excuse me?

HARBAUGH: Look Patrick, please stop questioning me. I went to a psychic last week and she told me this game wouldn't matter. We'd win the following week and the Packers would lose. That means this game means nothing.

WILLIS: A psychic?

HARBAUGH: Yep, she also gave me my lucky numbers and told me that a big change I made would mark my doom. Whatevs, bro!

WILLIS: So we got this?

HARBAUGH: Whatchoo talking about Willis? Of course we got this. Now go rest up. With this week of rest, we'll get to take it easy next week against the Cards and then we got a bye. THREE WEEK VACATION BABY!!!!
