The Replacements, who covered "The Letter" by The Box Tops in their early days, were led by Paul Westerburg who wrote the song, "Alex Chilton" after meeting Chilton in NYC in 1984.

My favorite bootleg recording by The Replacements is 'Live and Drunk' at NYC's CBGB in October of 1984, where the band played as Gary and the Boners (after their own song, "Gary's Got A Boner") Some very bizarre drunken cover songs that night with "If I Only Had a Brain" from The Wizard of Oz , Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe", Hank William's "Hey, Good Lookin'" and TV themes from Gilligan's Island and The Beverly Hillbillies.
