HOF in their future

I don't know if anyone remembers this but, several decades back, the big issue about HOF voting was - 'should a player be voted in the first time he is on the ballot?' It was an issue in Kaline's election. No one even worries about that any longer. And, maybe, that is a good thing. If you are not a true HOF player the first year you are eligible.....why should you be HOF material 14 or 15 years down the road? Society has changed....everyone wants instant gratification. Plus many people have started to take this voting personally. If the results are not what you want - scream about it! Throw in the growing irrelevance of 'history' and most baseball fans want to see THEIR players in ASAP. I liken it to Mt. Rushmore. If the people who shouted the loudest had their way, there would be 15-20 presidential heads carved up on that mountain side. And Bill Clinton would be the Barry Bonds issue for that discussion.

Agree with Adrian; if Morris didn't get in this year, he won't get in next year with Maddux, Glavine and maybe Frank Thomas locks.

Since we're picking the next Tigers HOFer, I went with Leyland simply because he'll be retired long before Cabrera or Verlander. Leyland gets a lot more respect outside Detroit, the opposite problem that Trammell and Whitaker have.  Gibson won't get in as a player.

Wouldn't bet against Prince Fielder, but he will need longetivity. Doesn't look like the type that will last, but Babe Ruth was no fitness cover model either. Besides, I thnk he could beat most of us in a race around the bases--and I mean those of us that can still run 360 feet without collapsing.

I guess I somewhat understand why some voters don't want to make certain players First Ballot HOF'ers, but someone please explain why you might get in on your 6th try, or 11th, or 14th?  I'm sure there's not much voter turnover year to year.  You boys are smart...enlighten me.  I think it's dumb.  You deserve it or you don't.
