It would be easy to just say he won't make it. After all, there are lots of examples of very high profile coaches before him not making that leap, but then people said the same things about both Harbaugh and Carroll just recently and things have worked out quite well for both. Does Kelly have the same latitude they both had to clear out those who didn't buy in and really make player choices? Time will tell, but I won't write him off until those are answered.Carroll's first NFL stint came from working his way up the college and then NFL ladder as DB, DC and finally HC, where he basically flopped and went back to HC in college. There he had success, and when he went back to the NFL, the speculation was negative because he had ALREADY flopped in the NFL before, with HC jobs in NY and NE. As for negative comments about Harbaugh, I don't remember them. In fact, I recall the press being mostly positive because of his NFL tenure as a fairly good QB and his very tough mentality as a no nonsense coach. Plus, he had turned around two programs he had got to. He didn't inherit already good programs. Seriously, what Harbaugh (and Shaw who came with him from USD) did to turn the Stanford program around was truly one of the most amazing coaching jobs I have ever seen. I was bummed that Harbaugh left, but I had no doubt that SF would benefit. With Kelly, I don't really see it working out any better than it did for Spurrier or Saban.

One other thing. Vick's contract is up. They will not resign him I don't think either, so saying Kelly already has his QB that fits his style is iffy at best.

About the starting QB for Kelly, who said he will be dead set on a read option spread in his first year anyway? Everyone assumes he thinks he can go up to the pros and run exactly what he did at oregon and I say if he even tries he will have the worst offense in the history of the league. I'm no expert on Oregon's schemes, but it does seem to me the playbook has changed from year to year as his pieces have changed. That tells me he knows well enough to shift your schemes to take advantage of the pieces you have and not try to bend kids to your system. |
