NORWEGIAN WOOD(THIS BIRD HAS FLOWN) - THE BEATLES

One of the best of THE BEATLES many great songs and primarily the work of JOHN LENNON. And as much as I would like to pretend that LENNON was the real driving genius behind the BEATLES, I seem to find more songs by PAUL, who I have almost total disregard for as a solo act, and even GEORGE that are my favorite BEATLE songs than I do of JOHN' S.

I could never figure out whether to take this group seriously although they were certainly darlings of the rock critics of the late 70s. This song is from the late 80s and was their only #1 single, but they actually sold more albums and concert tickets in the late 70s than during this period of comeback commercial success. Their drummer had one of my favorite names for a musician ever, although again I don't really know if it was his real name or a stage name which fits with the enigma of this group' history quite well I suppose.

Another night slowly closes in,
And I feel so lonely.
Touching heat freezing on my skin,
I pretend you still hold me.
I'm going crazy, I'm losing sleep.
I'm in too far, I'm in way too deep over you.
I can't believe you're gone.
You were the first, you'll be the last.

The Flame - Cheap Trick

No mention of Rick Nielsen's guitar collection?  I saw Rick's Hamer 5 neck guitar at a museum in Boston several years ago.

This '80s song was performed by a member of aband that was prominent inthe '70s, and written by his band mate.

After The Fire  --  Roger Daltrey and written by Pete Townshend
Another of the many shows at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ that I saw was a little warm-up concert by Daltrey there in Dec. of '85 in order to get ready for a bigger show at MSG in NY. Daltrey performed material from his solo album, 'Under A Raging Moon' and he mixed in some of The Who's classics. What stands out in my memory was how loose Daltrey was in flubbing some lines on a few songs and just laughing at himself for being rusty. It seemed to put everyone in a good mood that he could laugh at himself and we, the audience, laughed with him.

Among the songs that I can remember from that night are Substitute, Behind Blue Eyes, 5:15, Won't Get Fooled Again, After The Fire, Under A Raging Moon, Free Me, and Eddie Cochran's Summertime Blues and C'mon Everybody.

Stickin' with the 80's, here's one from a favorite indie cowpunk / country rock band of mine. This one is also a 'double themer' in the song title and in the band name. As far as I know these lyrics are unpublished, so to make it easier I'll use a simple verse that includes the song title:

Hey There! You're like a bird on a wire
Every time I get asked
Will you holler out
Help! There's a fire

Thanks for the extra clue, cobra. That's a new one on me!

Yeah, I think I've told the story that she dated Sammy Hagar after his Montrose days.
Yes!
that was it, mj!
Wow! So your wife really traded up, eh?

Their drummer had one of my favorite names for a musician ever, although again I don't really know if it was his real name or a stage name which fits with the enigma of this group' history quite well I suppose.
Fans,
I always liked that name Bun E Carlos from Cheap Trick. And in all their videos he was usually wearing a wife beater T shirt and smoking a cigarette while drumming. And with that porn stache he looked a lot like a mailman that I worked with for 30 years.
Not to ruin things for you but the drummer's real name is Brad Carlson.

By the way, I agree with your assessment of The Beatles. I also like John and George's solo work much better than Paul's but Paul's stuff with The Beatles was legendary!
I saw a very cool documentary at the Rock Hall last week that had video of the making of every Beatles studio album. Great stuff in there!

Next song:
So don’t misunderstand me
You put the light in my life
Oh, you put the spark to the flame
I’ve got your heart in my sites.

Wildfire  --  Michael Martin Murphey

From Wikipedia:
His masterpiece "Wildfire", is a sentimental song about the ghosts of a woman and her horse. As a boy, he first heard from his grandfather the story of a ghost horse rescuing people in the desert. Years later, Murphey had a dream about this ghost horse and wrote the words and music the same day with songwriter Larry Cansler.

Next: One from a 70's 'Fire' band with a connection to the Flying Burrito Brothers:

It's more that special way you look at me
That always keeps me there, woh oh

Bright light city gonna set my soul
Gonna set my soul on fire
Got a whole lot of money that's ready to burn,
So get those stakes up higher
There's a thousand pretty women waitin' out there
And they're all livin' devil may care
And I'm just the devil with love to spare

NOTE:  I had already planned to use this as my next clue, and any relation to the previous song is completely coincidental.

NOTE 2:  I am considering "burning rain" to be a metaphor for "fire."

This old earthquake's gonna leave me in the poorhouse
It seems like this whole town's insane
On the thirty-first floor a gold-plated door
Won't keep out the Lord's burning rain

The lamp light gets in the way
On the darkness you pushed me in

You told me not to sing today
You say my music gets in the way
Cause he walks on in just as you begin

Here's an easy one that everybody should know, that also connects the gun theme and this fire theme:

Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
