Gregg Williams Return?

January 27, 2013 8:05 pm
The Tennessean is reporting that the Titans are showing interest in Gregg Williams.

A return to football and Tennessee is possible here.  I'm for this move 100%.  I already didn't like Jerry Gray, but Williams (legal or not) showed success in Tennessee his first time around.  Maybe our defense can get mean again and match up with the Defenses they put on the field in the early 2000's.  Specifically the 2000 Titans went 13-3 and had an outstanding D that only missed big time recognition for all time because that was the same year that Baltimore broke the defensive points allowed record.  If I remember correctly, the Titans also held their opponents under 200 pts that year (196?).

I don't think he would replace Gray outright, but even with a position (almost preferrably smaller than DC with the media attention he'll bring) he can be a big upgrade.

With all do respect I don't think we have one player on todays team that could compare to a player the Titans had at the same position back then...

The only players we have that I think could compare is Colin and he was hurt alot last year....Point being, how much can we really blame Gray?

I don't think it would hurt us....Meaning I don't think we could get any worse, but if we do this, this is jst more reason for me to be pissed at the FO at the given moment...

Every year it's the samething...a F'n rollercoaster ride...up/down....up/down.....

Then when we are on a roll we hit the loop-D-loop and can't make it all the way around and start going backwards...

All this franchise does is shoot itself in the foot....And as much as I hate to say it (even though I said it before) because I've been following TEN ever since the move....Im really starting to think hard about switching teams because this is just becoming a mess. It's hard to cheer for a team that seems like they purposly take a step backwards every year.

Hey atleast for not a Lions fan. Wink My friend has stuck with them for years we will get it turned around and if we don't we may have a new home in the next few years. Bud lives in Texas still so when he dies they may move are team anyway.

A couple things to clarify my stance.
1. I agree our D needs A LOT of work.  Maybe a few players could be key, but overall, they need work.
2. I think Gray is here for the season outside of complete failure throughout the season next year that gets him fired.
3. If Williams is even allowed to coach, I wouldn't immediately try to replace Gray with him.  I think with the media coverage he is going to bring (not necessarily a bad thing for Tennessee) and being on a new team, maybe he could take one of the position coach spots or just a Asst. Coordinator spot to see how he does.  After a year or two, we see if it was worth while or move on with no harm no foul.
4. Maybe this is my flaw, but I'll never jump ship from Tennessee.  Just can't.  Seems like I invested the last 24 yrs into the Oilers/Titans that my mind now won't let me if I wanted to.  Small consolation, Bud Adams can't have this team forever.

Im not sure how this move is a bad thing if he is even allowed to coach again by Goddell.

The good points to this is the coaching staff is likley to be let go after next season unless we make the playoffs.
meaning munchak, Gray and Loggains will all be gone and im not sure after 3 straight seasons of about 7 head coaches or more being available if next years coaching pool is going to be that deep.

Titans are probably looking at williams in two respects. 1. He could be our next head coach 2. Could take over for Gray if they decide to fire him in season like they did Palmer.

I dont think Williams would have come here if he didnt think he had a shot at being the head coach next year, somebody in the FO is preparing for next year... that someone is Ruston Webster.

Im getting the Feeling that webster wasnt to fond of how Reinfeldt had him under the puppet strings and somehow convinced adams that he will get this team heading in the right direction. I still have my doubts but with them bringing in Williams to me it sends a clear message to Munchak and Gray that they better get it done because the Titans are ready to move on.

Well he is here so now the questions are how long is it before he takes over at defensive coordinator? If he does take over and does well but the Titans miss playoffs does he become head coach?

I find it interesting that Munchak, Gray and Williams contracts are all up at the end of next season.

I like that he is on the staff and if nothing else, he may be able to help Gray keep his and Munch's job throughout the year.  I think it was a low risk/high reward pick up for the organization.  The media coverage (which is usually nil) might be negative but since he's not one of the big three (OC, DC, HC) then he shouldn't be too much of a distraction.  I also think he was a good coach whether the bounties existed or not, so we may have just gotten a big coaching upgrade for real cheap and minimal risk.

I think will see a definite change in the defense with his input. I too, am sure the Titans will catch alot of heat for hiring him, but if he can stay clean so to speak, then its a big win for us. If Gray continues to struggle with the defense, then a change to Williams could be made.

You know they say that Gray is still calling the plays and i believe that but i think munchak brought in Williams to create the scheme of the defense.
I believe our defense is going to be more aggressive and i would be suprised if it is not.
