Biggest Raider Regrets

However, having said that, there's no denying that over the last ten years Al Davis did more harm than good to our favorite team. He fired coach after coach, season after season all because he wouldnt conform or adjust to the modern NFL. Instead of hiring quality coaches and letting them run the team the way they needed to, Al Davis was constantly meddling in his coaches business. That's the main reason that we were constantly turned down by quality coaches (J.Harbaugh, S.Payton, B.Parcells) and forced to deal with turd HC's.

Being able to admit when you made a mistake... It takes a big man to be able to do so. Al Davis could tell when the new head coach was not going to pan out long before other owners and GMs would be willing to admit it. Would you have rather seen the Raiders hang on to Norv Turner like the Chargers did?

So you give him credit for constantly firing people that he never should have hired in the first place?

I'm not saying he shouldnt have fired J.Bugel, B.Callahan, L.Kiffin or A.Shell v2.0. I'm saying that he never should of even hired them in the first place. Do you think ANY of those guys would have been hired as a HC for any other NFL team? I sure dont.

Yeah they probably wouldn't. Some of them (Lane Kiffin) figured out what to say to Davis in an interview to make him believe they might turn into the next John Madden. Others (Art Shell) probably got hired because of their past contributions. Still others (Norv Turner) got hired because they simply appeared to be the best option at the time.

All of them were failures, yes. All of them were hired by Al Davis, yes. But Hue Jackson was Davis' last hire and it sure looked like he hit on something there before Davis died. Davis reputation might have been saved if he had just lived another year and a half. Of course it may have been made worse, but I guess we'll never know. It will forever be one of those sports "What IF's" in my book.

When Ron Wolfe left the organization for Green Bay this was the start of the downfall of the domination the Raiders enjoyed for years. After Wolfe left the Raiders they were never the same, the personnel was never the same and the wins decreased from that point on.

Im with hateall. Ron Wolf was the biggest mistake this team made by letting him go. Now he didnt go right to Green Bay he went to New York for a year before going to Green Bay. But when you look at the first significant move that Wolf made it was trading for Brett Favre. Now IDK if he was still here or if he was already gone, but Im quite sure the Raiders knew they wanted another qb the year Favre was gonna enter the draft and they picked Todd Marinovich over him.

Had they gone with Favre IDK if Wolf would have stayed or if he was already on his way out or what have you. But Favre with those speed demon of reveivers they had and his gunslinger mentality would have fit perfectly with the Raiders and they wouldn't have missed a beat in the 90s. They had some sub par seasons in the 90s but nothing like they experienced after the Super Bowl run of the 00 - 02/03 campaigns.

Biggest mistakes all teams make seem to revolve around who is their qb and more often than not its who they drafted or failed to draft at that position. Marc Wilson help set the team back. Marinovich certainly set the team back. Russell absolutely set the team back. But the Raiders aren't alone in that category. For as great as the Ravens have drafted, drafting Kyle Boller and running with him easily cost them one more ring maybe two with that defense still being at its prime. Even the Steelers made a huge mistake in 83 when they didnt draft Dan Marino a Pittsburgh native and it caused riffs in that orgainzation mainly between the Rooney brothers if Im not mistaken.
