While we have the rumored $42 to $48 million under the cap to spend, it's going to take an Eric Steinbach (seven year, $49 million) to get a guard like Levitre to Cleveland.  While he certainly is one of the best free agents on the market, the lone strength of our team is our offensive line.
I have no issues with a contract like 7 years $49M for Levitre...

Then;

With moves to a vertical offense and attacking 3-4 defense, I feel the money could be better spent addressing rush linebackers, free safety or a deep-threat wide receiver.
Go out and sign a) Rob Jackson to immediately start at OLB at around $3.5M per year and also throw in Ray Horton's buy Quentin Groves at around $2.5M per year...

And yes, I would love to go out and get a Jarius Byrd for the back field, but honestly, I think upgrading the Guard position is just as important..What will Byrds $$$ be? The thing is both of these positions have a couple of players in free agency and then a big dropoff.

I would like to see this happen in free agency:

Levitre, Jackson and Groves...that will account for around $14M per year, then one other move would be at CB with someone like Tony Carter, who would step in and be the #2 CB upgrade so that you could maybe get someone later in the draft to grow with. As bad a Skrine was a starter, he is fine for a nickel...

Then you have a lot of maneuverability in the draft at #6...You are covered at LB, albeit safe solid guys...and you are covered at CB with another underwhelming,, yet reasonably priced guy...so you can evaluate the talent at #6 and feel good taking which ever guy you have rated the highest...

Although if you go Byrd in free agency instead of Levitre, you could also add Warmack to the talk at #6...I think you have to improve the G position in one way or another though...it is our achilles heal.

Wide receivers can be had in the later rounds of the draft...We already have Travis Benjamin and Josh Gordon capable of stretching the field...adding someone like Tavarres King late in the draft and believe it or not re-signing Josh Cribbs...

If you believe we're only a piece or two away from Playoff contention
We've already had this conversation and it didn't end well, so I won't go there...I feel we are a coach away from being in playoff contention. All I can do at this point is hope they hired the right one...

I want an O-coordinator that gets the play in with 15 seconds left on the play clock instead of 7 seconds...I want a D-coordinator that will move guys around and FIND ways to put pressure on the QB, whether or not they get a sack...

Those two things will help this team more than any single player we find...obviously, we need a lot more talent infusion before we are Super Bowl contenders, but the coaching has got to be there otherwise all else is moot.

I should have stated, in a trade down scenario...#6 is too high for Warmack...of course

Actually, allow me to indulge just a tad here SAS...

I want to build upon a few of your recent thoughts..

1) Absolutely NO trade down out of #6
2) Super Stars in the NFL, with one of your most popular topic pieces, JJ Watt
3) The need for upgrades at multiple positions

So if I were to turn the argument on you as far as the trade down scenario is concerned...

These are OBVIOUSLY hypotheticals, but we have become conditioned to believe at least one thing in todays NFL, there will be over drafted QBs and atleast 2 will be taken in the top 6...That means the reak top draft talent will only have 3 of the top 4 gone by our pick...SOMEONE will emerge as a top QB prospect, happens EVERY YEAR...Geno Smith is not the undisputed top prospect.

Say the draft came out like this:

1) KC trade out of #1, Eagles trade up and take Geno Smith(it is being reported that the Eagles will cut Vick on Thursday)
2) Jaguars select Demontre Moore
3) Raiders select Bjoern Werner
4) Eagles trade up to KC~ (give up Nick Foles #4, #67 and 2014 first round pick.) Chiefs take Star Lotulelei
5) Lions trade out with the Cardinals, pick is (the 2013 QB sky rocket Mike Glennon) Lions receive Cards #7 and #38

6) Browns have many a trade partner now for either/or Luke Joeckel/Dee Milliner...my prediction in this scenario could see the San Diego Chargers sending the Browns #11 and #46 and Antonio Gates(Whisenhunt nor McCoy value the TE as much as Turner/Chud) Select Joeckel

7) Cardinals trade up, worried that the Browns are taking QB, to the Lions who gladly select Dee Milliner
8) Bills select QB Tyler Wilson, to make it the hat trick in the to ten
9) Jets select DE/OLB Barkevious Mingo
10) Titans select Chance Warmack
11) Cleveland still has choices in Ezekial Ansah, Jarvis Jones(if he checks put medically), Dion Jordan for the Rush LB position, at CB Jonthan Banks and Xavier Rhodes...take your pick...I would actually have had Ansah and Jones as top choices at #6..

Then come back at #67 and grab Margus Hunt, DE freak. This cat is in the mold of JJ Watt, but much more raw than when Watt came out...He can play DE in either the 4-3 or 3-4 looks, however he is very raw and will need to be coached up...No one better than Horton to do that.

#68 depends on which way you go in free agency...if you get Levitre, you go with Bacarri Rambo at FS, if you go Byrd, then you snag Larry Warford at G...

#101 grab Tyrann Mathieu and pray he has wisened up...

A trade down wouldn't be the worst thing in the world...Then with this plan intact, you could afford to move a couple of DTs for extra 2nd/3rd round picks depending on who you are talking about also...Not ideal, but moving to a 3-4, you have to atleast think about it.
In this scenario, we would once again be employing most likely 3 new starters on defense from the rookie pool...Again, not ideal, but I am bored and had time on my hands to kill....

Irish... it's a bit early for me to try and get into hypotheticals, but I don't disagree with the core of your argument.

I'm not saying that the "don't trade down" should be a hard and fast rule that isn't to be broken, but I do think it has the most merit of any other draft proverbs -- besides "you don't pass up a franchise QB if you dont' have a franchise QB".

In your trade down from #6 to #11, we're only sliding five spots and still staying in the upper echelon of the draft.  I don't have a major issue with that.  What I do take issue with is the trade downs from #6 to #28 and then burning picks to move back up to get a solid contributor, turning future picks into more manuevering fuel (#4 to #3, despite no apparent danger of missing TR-33) and then wiffing on the extra first.

I do think if the GM has a solid track record of acquiring talent, any option is on the table.  When you only hit on first and second round picks as a GM, then those are precious and need to be the impact guys.  I don't know what Lombardi's recent track record working as a mercenary for Billicheck has been.  I just don't trust him right now trying to bee-bop and scat through the draft positions just because the offers are there.

The conversation that started with Mike Lombardi has gravitated to a level only matched with the Browns and Rams records the past few seasons.Sealed  Between SAS and Irish, we have two Browns fans discussing elements that only the new owner can fix and that is called talent.Money mouth  It doesn't matter how many good players the Browns have, they need more and that is the real facts and we all know that.Yell  I say start with a huge FA stash and find the gems in the draft and we will look like a contender for a winning record.Cool  If the owner doesn't spend, Chub, Turner, Horton or even Bellacheat couldn't get a 8-8 record in Cleveland.  This off season should be fun to watch.Smile Crap, got a non cooked kernal caught in my throatCry ugh!

I would add I'd also like a coach/OC who do not waste timeouts. They are precious, as proven by the end of the Super Bowl.  Think SF wouldn't have wanted one or both of those TOs back?

I have to say I've never understood why coaches waste them as often as they do in the 2nd half of a close game (especially if losing). In SFs case, they'd have been better off taking a delay of game penalty than using their second TO. They knew they were passing anyway, so it could be argued they were better off at the 10 (more room to work) than the 5.

Well, in that case, then just keep that feeling.  When you actually use full words, your posts make a lot more sense.

Hopefully you get that in Chud who is giving the pressure of offense to Turner and the pressure of defense to Horton...He wants to know the gameplan, but he wants to control these game aspects better than what we have seen in the past from our HCs that have their hand in either the offense/defense and never really has control of the HC duties...One can only hope....
