I am no Islanders' fan and I expected this to be just one more item on their track record of ineptitude.  However, when you consider that Thomas gets paid $0 and that the Islanders gain the cap hit that brings them over the floor, then this is borderline genius.  They are literally on the hook for nothing if Thomas never suits up for them - or any other team his rights may be traded to.

What's the penalty for being below the salary cap floor?  Does a team lose a draft pick?

Boston gains, too.  That's the part that stings.
