Is the champion the best team?

This topic has been rehashed many times. I think most people agree that rarely is the NCAA tournament champion the best team. There are a few exceptions. I think Kentucky was the best team last year, but more times than not, it's the team that gets the best matchups in the tournament and gets hot at the right time that wins. I suppose you could say the best team at the time of the tournament wins. If basketball were played year round, you would probably have a new best team every 6-8 weeks or so.

1983--NC State (26-10) d. Houston (31-3)
1985--Villanova (25-10) d. Georgetown (35-3)
1986--Louisville (32-7) d. Duke (37-3)
1988--Kansas (27-11) d. Oklahoma (35-4)
1997--Arizona (25-9) d. Kentucky (35-5)

These are just a few examples of the "best" team not winning. It happens a lot in sports which is fine by me. What counts is whoever wins the Championship. They may not be the best team, but they earned the trophy.
It's interesting that all those games except for one happened in the 80's. Which is odd because there is much more parity today than there was in the 80's.

While that is true, remember that we are only a few years removed from an all number one ff. The parity today is so huge though, you would think that it would be more common, but even with butlers and vcus of the world, the top seeds still manage to rise to the top at the end of the day.

Were the Ravens the best team? It's always subjective and everyone can have differing opinions who the "best team" is, but can't we expect the "best team" to show up at the most important time? It's the same in all of sports. A successful regular season gives you a shot at playing for the championship, records are 0-0 come tourney time and may the best team win.

I honestly think this year might be a year where a lower seed wins the tournament. I think it's going to be a wide open tournament this year..............more than most years.

That's a very romantic notion that CBS and the NCAA sell every March and if you buy into it that's fine, but I'm not going to ignore the thousands of games that happened every year, prior to the tournament.

The NBA has a similarly silly sales pitch for their playoffs...
"Win or go home!"

(realistically it's "Win or play another game, then go home... and play two more games, and as long as you won at least one of those you aren't really going home.")
