Will the Lakers make the playoffs?

February 22, 2013 1:43 am
Now the trade deadline is gone, we can look at the teams fighting for the final 2 spots in the west.

I think there's 4-5 teams fighting for the final 2 playoffs spots in the west and I think the Lakers miss out.

The Magic number to me is 45 wins. The Jazz and GSW just need to go .500 over their final 28 games and Houston just have to go 16-10 to hit the 45 win mark while LAL need to go 19-7 to hit that 45 win mark.

Houston schedule gets very favorable in March but before that they play 6 of 8 on the road but the games are not very tough. They should go 5-3 in this stretch and after this they come home for 9 of 10.

As for Utah their schedule is a little tougher but not by much. They do go on a 4 game eastern roadtrip in early March going against CLE, CHI,MIL,and NYK. Have few tough road games in SA,HOU, & OKC in next month but I expect them to finish with 46-48 wins.

Now on to GSW. All they have to do is survive this 5 game trip starting this sunday. If they go 2-3 I love their chances of making it in LA. Starting on March 4th-April 4th the Warriors will play 12 of 15 at home....Only 3 games in April for them.

As for the Lakers the schedule in March is not so tough but they do play 10 games on the road in the month and we're talking about a team who is 9 games below .500

I say Lakers miss out barely on the playoffs.

BTW last day of the season the Lakers host Houston

The better question is: Will punchline ever make good on his closeted yearnings to finally come out of the closet and assume his real identity as a Lakers fan?

I think they will. The Warriors are scaring me right now.  Utah and Houston are vulnerable as well.  I give it about 65% for the Lakers to make it.  Something like that.

I think if they do make it the team that won't make it will be Golden State. In order for the Lakers to make the playoffs they'll need to win 9 of ther final 14 on the road and win most of their home games.

"In order for the Lakers to make the playoffs they'll need to win 9 of ther final 14 on the road and win most of their home games"

Kobe threw a realistic number out there before the Celts game calculating that the Lakers need to go 20-8 to make the playoffs.

They won that game, so now, hypothetically they need to go 19-8 (.704).

So the question is, why would a team he can't play .500 for the first 55 games suddenly be able to play .700+ for the remainder or the season?

Also, the Rockets have won 2/3 so far vs the Lakers so they currently hold the tie breaker.   I know the have 1 more meeting.

All along I have been telling Laker fans to do the math.

The numbers don't bode well for them.

Honestly turnup even if they go 19-8 I'm not sure if they make the playoffs. 45 wins doesn't guarantee you a spot which is where 19-8 get them to. All GSW have to do is go 14-14 to get 45 wins and they have a ton of home games left on the schedule while Utah just have to go 14-13 and they're a 21-6 home team with 14 home games left. As for Houston they just need to go 15-11 which should happen because they have a very easy March schedule including a stretch where they play 9 of 10 at home where they're currently 19-8 at.

If the Lakers want to feel safe about making the playoffs I think they need to go 22-5 in the final 27 games.

It is tough to gain ground if the other teams are not losing.

Last 10 games over a 3 week period of better play:

*Jazz 7-3
Lakers 6-4
Rockets 6-4
Mavericks 6-4
Warriors 4-6
Blazers 3-7

They gained versus the Blazers and Warriors, but those are not as important as the Jazz or Rockets.

The Lakers cannot simply win their way into the playoffs.

They need the other teams to lose as well.

And those teams are not really cooperating.

"my $ is on the Lakers and other teams will start to wilt"

Other teams?

Utah looks pretty solid.

Warriors are struggling, but they have enough cushion to get through it.

I see Lakers only chance is passing Rockets, which on paper, I don't see happening.

The Lakers MUST beat Dallas IMO on Sunday. Both to stay ahead of them and to take a little pressure off of the Nuggets game the next night.

Don't forget Dallas, they are getting heathier.   Once Dirk go back to 100%, they will be fighting for a spot.

Lakers are 9th with 9 games to play.

Lose tonight and the Mavs are just a half game behind the Lakers.

It has happened.  The Warriors team that beat Dallas in round 1 about 6 years okay closed out the season at 19-5 I believe.  Something like that.  It does not happen a lot but it does happen.

Currently 11-7 since the Boston game. Still have tough games against SAC, MEM, LAC, SAS, POR, GSW, and HOU left on the schedule.

for all the kobe lovers here is something for you..

how is it gonna feel not winning a chip when kobe played with not one but 2 super teams
and they always say wade is not better than him.. wade has been better than kobe for at least 5 years now and it really isn't as close as the kobe lovers like to make it seem. Wink

oh and btw.. the Heat beat the Lakers twice this year and head to head wade outplayed kobe. and kobe guarded wade and got tourched for 16 in the 4th quarter. and wade guarded kobe as well..

They do have a ton of home games to close out the season for sure.  Their defense has just slipped so bad over the last 7 or so games they are just scaring me.  The rookies have been slipping a lot lately.  I have to stick to my pre-season stance and say they have to prove it to me and make it before I am going to start saying they can make it.

As I have said since the preseason, I think it all depends on the Lakers.
They have the talent.  It just depends on health and if they can find the chemistry to pull it together.
So far they have had neither, though recently they have shown signs of turning it around.
If they manage to play up to their potential they can sneak into the playoffs.
It would take them playng very well together and having a nice run to finish the season, and if they are playing that well together the Lakers would be a team no one could take for an easy out.
There are a lot if ifs, but if they put it together look out.
They have a rallying point now with the unfortunate death of Dr. Buss, maybe this will focus them and get them playing together for a cause.

Jefe, you have offered more opinions, based on the continued Lakers failings then a fortune teller at a state fair.

Rememeber when you said (once you realized what a disaster it was) that you didn't care where they finished, as long as it wasn't the 8 seed??

So now what? Let's live through your rose colored glasses and say all planets align and you sneak in.

Have you been watching the Spurs?

You would need to be FORTUNATE to win 1 game.

Totally agree. I say between 17-19 wins in the final 27 is likely. If I had to put money on it I'll say 17-10

It is impossible for it to ALL depend on the Lakers because they are currently out of the playoffs.  Even if they go undefeated the rest of the way it doesn't guarantee them anything.  It depends on them doing very good AND on at least one other team ahead of them doing bad enough to let them in.

Yes, of course you and wildcats are right, when every other team goes undefeated the rest of the way the Lakers can not make the playoffs.  How silly of me to forget that.

I think it all depends on the Lakers.
It doesn't. They're in 9th place which means they need teams to lose in order to make it. If the Lakers lose 2 less games  than Houston from now til the end of the season and lose 4 games less than Utah and GSW from now until the end of the season they still would miss the playoffs so to say it all depends on the Lakers is a stupid answer. It depends on the Rockets, Jazz, and Warriors.

If they manage to play up to their potential they can sneak into the playoffs.
What is their potential? They only have 27 games left. They have yet to play to their potential in the first 55 games, why should I believe they will start now?

Stop with the lame excuses.

All season long the Lakers won 1 game they shouldn't have. Every other win on their schedule so far was expected and all of sudden I'm suppose to expect them to play good on the road and also beat teams who are better than them on a consistent base?

Another reason this is a lame excuse because the Lakers had 2 or 3 of their big 4 playing in every game this year.

Wow, talk about nitpicking.
Why I think it is all up to the Lakers, which shouldn't be difficult to figure out from what I wrote, is that if they can be healthy AND play up to their potential they are the four games better than Houston it would take to make the playoffs.
They have yet to do this yet this season, but they now have a cause to come together and play for that can help them focus.
Is it a given that they make the playoffs--far from it.  To me it is a long shot still.
But really, with the talent on that squad I do still believe it is all up to the Lakers.
