This is a guess without Googling it.  One year Princeton played Georgetown to a stalemate and almost beat them.  I do not recall if it was overtime or not, but it was some time in te 1980s.  I'm going to say that's the same year Georgetown lost to Villanova in the final, which was 1985.

This is a pure guess.  Georgetown also played in the final in 1982 (lost to UNC) and 1984 (beat Houston), so it might have been one of those years.

Or Georgetown/Princeton might be the wrong answer entirely!!

Sorry, Luke this is wrong. The year that you are reffering to is 1989 when #16 Princeton lost to #1 Georgetown 50-49. This game did not go to overtime. Georgetown went to the Elite 8 where they lost to Duke. 

You are close in yesr, but no where near close in the teams.

1989 was the year Michigan beat Seton Hall in the Final.  I don't recall which of them beat Duke in the semifinal.

I remember in 2006, three of the four games were close at halftime, and people wondered if we would see history.  All three, though, weren't close in the end, with the 1 seed pulling away (although in UCONN's case VERY late in the game).  Couldn't tell you when a #1 seed was brought to overtime.  Will be interested to see who it was.

OK, I have a work meeting to attend at 10AM so I have to let you know sooner than anticipated.

The answer ia 1990. 

#16 Murray St took #1 Michigan St to overtime. But eventually lost 75-71. There are other #16 seeds that only lost by less than 4 points but this is regarded as the Best Perfrmance by a #16 because of the overtime factor. 

Michigan St went on to the Sweet 16 where they lost to eventual Final Four team Georgia Tech in another overtime game, 81-80.

Interesting side note on the 1989 tourney, Princeton was not the only #16 seed to almost pull off the upset that year. #1 seed Oklahoma also barely snuck past #16 seed East Tennessee St, 72-71. Oklahome made it to the Sweet 16 where they lost to #5 Virginia, 86-80.
