List of the top 10 Head Coaches in NFL history

It's actually .490 without him, but its still under .500.  I'd put BP ahead of BB for 2 reasons.  

1.  Parcells assistants under him almost all went on to become very successful coaqches and coordinators on almost every level of football.  BB assistants have gone on to flop essentially wherever they go and the team ends up being pretty bad.  If i'm ranking head coaches then preparing their assistants for their future head coaching expieriences is pretty high on my list

2.  I know that some people will  say it isnt a big deal, but you still cannot ignore the whole Spygate incident.  It happened, and if Roger Goodell had any balls he would have revealed it to the world.  

How can lombardi be considered the greates coach of all time, it doesnt make sense.
 He may have been the greates coach in his era but not of all time.
 You cant place any coach at all time because of the eras they played in.
 Lombardi is the greates pioneer coach of all time in my eyes but i cant say he is the best coach of all time.

 News flash... there were only 12 teams in the NFL during his time not 32 like today. there were also less games played.
 He is the pioneer of what foot ball would become in scheming with defese and offense.
 Landry should be right there with him, alot of people dont know that he was not only a player on the Giants but also coaching the Giants at the same time.
 So he would also be one of the greatest pioneers of all time.
 So how are you judging who is the best of all time?
 Football has changed so much since the 30s 40s and 50s.
 Hell palyers in those days played defense and offense, players today couldnt hold those old timers jock straps.

I love how BB supporters just want to forget about Cleveland. Yes, I'm aware that the organization sucks - doesn't matter. He coached there and made the playoffs ONCE. He left with a losing record. As for the guy that asked how does Lombardi get ranked #1....first, championships. He won 5 in 9 years. Two of those came AFTER the merger so there were more than just 12 teams. And yeah, winning 73% of his games is huge. There's a reason they named the trophy after the guy.  

You haven't explained how he sucked in Cleveland yet. He had a record a little below .500 and got the Browns to the playoffs. At worst that's mediocre for that organization, and far from terrible.

Actually I DID explain how he sucked in Cleveland but to go into detail for you here we go....6-10, 7-9, 7-9, 11-5, 5-11. He only won 45% of his games. That doesn't SUCK to you? Really?

In cleveland? No, it doesn't. It isn't the best coaching job ever, but terrible? it's not like he was averaging 4-12, which by all means those Browns should have.

Yeah, it kinda does. Like most you want to excuse Cleveland like it didn't count so you can make your HC look better. He won only 45% of his games, so slightly better than 4 out of 10. Yeah, that sucks. PS...where we draw THAT line? Do we do this only for BB? Is it only for Cleveland? Do we also throw out a guys record in Oakland? Or Miami? Or KC? When judging a HC's career you have to look at his whole career, not just the shiny parts.

Who's throwing it out? I just said it's not as awful as you claim. He took an awful team and was mediocre with them. It's not anything to brag about, and I'm not pretending it is. But if you truly think he was awful there or that it brings down his standing among the greats, I seriously question your understanding of the game.

BB was 8 games under 500 in cleveland during a 5 year career there. He also took a pretty bad toeam to the playoffs. BB's record speaks for itself and he is also a 3 time AP NFL Coach of the year to go along with 3 Lombardis.

you also have to take into consideration that BB and Madden coached in 2 different eras of the game. BB I feel had the more ddifficult time just because of constant rule changes that hampered every team year in and year out unlike Madden.

The OP made the topic of the thread the top 10 coaches in NFL history. In retrospect he could have divided it up into different eras, but he didn't. Therefore I have to go from 1920 to 2012.

Few understand how much the game has changed in the last 90+ years.

A few changes just to give you an idea...

1) At one time there were no playoffs or championship game. The champion was determined based solely on W-L record, and to screw that up not all teams played the same amount of games.

2) There were no hash marks until 1933.

3) The Chicago Bears (and those visiting them) had to play on the old Polo grounds - a field which was only 50 yards long. So when you reached the end, you had to turn around and come back.

4) The ball used to look more like a medicine ball then it does now. It was made for running, not throwing.

5) No salary cap until 1994 so teams could spend as much as they wanted.

6) The goal posts used to be at the front of the endzone, not the back. That was a change made by Lamar Hunt.

7) You were allowed to bump the WR downfield. This changed in the mid-70's and is now known as the "Mel Blount" rule.

8) The QB was afforded no more protection than anyone else

9) Head slapping was legal - as was clotheslining and leading with the helmet.

10) Teams had to travel across country by train. That took a few days traveling from NY to the west coast. Travel time ate up most your game prep time.

So being a coach in the 1930's was very different than today - I'll grant you that.

But going by the standard as set by the OP, Lombardi is the best.

When judging a HC's career you have to look at his whole career, not just the shiny parts.
Isn't it just as bad to point out the bad parts and only focus on that.

If you look at Belichicks career as a whole......187-101, 18-8 in the playoffs, 5 SB appearances with 3 wins............I'd say overall that is pretty damn good.
