Skeeter, draft picks are a form of NFL currency.  They have value regardless of how they are ultimately "spent".  How we use those draft picks is a completely separate endeavor.  Check it out:

Say you have a first generation Ipad.  Unfortunately, it took you FOREVER to figure out how to use, but once you did, you liked it and found it to be an effecient way to do things.  Then for Christmas you get the NEW Ipad 4.  It is better than your original Ipad in every respect (it is faster on Wifi and 3G and it doesn't have small hands).  Well, now the only time you will use your first Ipad is if something happens to the first one so it's your "backup" Ipad, so to speak.  Well, I don't have an Ipad, so your original Ipad is worth more to me than it is to you.  I offer you 50% of what you originally paid for the original Ipad, which is a phenomenol deal for a used piece of electronics.  You wouldn't judge the value of that deal based on how you eventually spend the money.  You might do something really stupid with that money or something really smart.  But that doesn't change the fact that you got a good deal from me for a limited piece of technology that was several years old.

Gore and I are on the same page here.  Its now up to the 49ers front office to turn those picks into something.  This is the hard part but as of late the front office has done a great job with drafting players so I have faith in them.

Except, you wouldn't be given $50 in that analogy; you would be given a voucher that could be worth nothing, and may be worth more than you paid for the original iPad and, there's a chance your new iPad could break, and you would be left without ANY iPad and you'd have a worthless voucher that may, or may not, have good/anyu value in the future.  That's a more apt analogy and the "winner" in the deal is the guy that got the iPad that is tested and has a very low probability of breaking, whereas you get a new, shiny iPad, but it may have kinks that will take time to work out and no warrantee in which to cover said costs.

Analogies are fun...

But the new Ipad already operated better then the old Ipad.  Thats why we dodnt need the old Ipad anymore so why not get something for it.

This is fun. LOL

I should have checked the next page before replying - this was exactly what I was looking to write.  Jay got the analogy right.

Draft picks give a team the "potential" to get some really good players.

If we use these draft picks, and get two pro-bowlers, you could say we won.

If we use these draft picks, and get two players who dont make it out of campl, you could say we lost.

And then, I know people dont like this, but there is that possibility that it works out for both teams.

Either way you look at it, you cant tell whether it was a good trade or not..........there are too many unknows.

Um, of course they do.............but it is no where near that ipad example you game.  Draft picks have some value - but their real value is in the players that are drafted.  You can trade draft picks back and forth all day, but your team wont get better until you actuall draft the player.
