Anquan Boldin asked to take a paycutMarch 11, 2013 11:21 am
Regardless of if you technically can or not, why would anyone restructure a deal they just signed. It's not going to happen. If they wanted that money, they should have worked it out before signing a contract.

Kinda silly dont you think. |

i agree its silly but is an option, poor planning to begin with if both sides agree to a restructure, but it is possible, but doubtful to happen

i agree its silly but is an option, poor planning to begin with if both sides agree to a restructure, but it is possible, but doubtful to happenThe only thing to restructure is Flacco's base which is only 1M in 2013. The vet minimum for 5+ yr players is 715,000 so they could drop his base to 715,000 and take the remaining 285,000 and spread it out over 5 years for a whopping savings of $218,000. That's your only option at this point which means there are no options. Boldin is a goner unless he takes less because the Ravens need the money for free agency. Ozzie can work miracles with the Cap room Boldin's release creates. To be honest I'm not sure if I believe they only asked him to take a 2M pay cut. That doesn't sound like enough unless they are also going to release Leach and / or McClain. Keep in mind when you look at the Ravens salary cap: 1. They have to issue RFA tenders in the next 24 hours which could be around 7-8M and they need room to sign their rookie draft class (around 4.5M). That's basically eats up the cap space they have right now so if they want to sign Ellerbe, McKinnie, Reed or anyone else in free agency they need to create room somewhere. 2. They don't really have any restructure candidates. Haloti's base salary is only 4M, Suggs is ony 6M with just one more year under contract and no one else has a base salary over 3M. They could save about 2M if they redo Haloti's deal but he is already a 16.5M cap hit in 2014/15. They could save about 2.5M if they lower Suggs' base but he's already a 14.4M cap hit next year and whatever you save in 2013 gets added to 2014 barring an extension. 3. Boldin, Leach, McClain and Jones are your only real options to lower your cap right now with either releases or extensions and it's not prudent to extend 30+ year olds and guys coming off neck injuries. |

Jacoby should get an extension. His return ability made a serious difference. McClain I'd cut but they'd only do that if they could sign Ellerbe. I'd be fine with Bynes playing in place of Jameel but depth will be needed. Can't lose McClain AND Ellerbe though. Boldin is the wildcard. Unless they give him a one year extension, I'm expecting to read "Latest News, Ravens release WR Anquan Boldin". |

Actually now that I look at it McClain is probably safe if he's healthy. His release creates a 2.4M cap charge so the savings is only 1.8M. Do you release a capable LB to save 1.8M? Doesn't seem likely when you consider his replacement will cost about 480k.

Sucks, but if they were going to have to cut him anyway, might as well get a pick for him.

As a 49er fan, I think I really like this. And we only gave up a 6.

It's also reported the Vikings were interested but didn't offer as much. Not as much as a 6th? Wouldn't that just mean they offered a 7th? Does anyone know if the 49ers had multiple 6th round picks. Not that there is much difference between early and late 6th rounders but I was curious if it could be an early pick as opposed to the second to last pick in the round (not counting comp. picks). |

Gah! Just a 6th round pick? To our probable perennial NFC nemisis? So much much for Boldin's "I'm a Raven for life" speech. Not his decision though, but I guess they just didn't have any options. I think that this trade too means that the Ravens now have the most picks in the draft (now 12) since the 49ers had 12 before the trade. Still, not the draft where that many picks is going to yield 6 future stars for us. Then again, diamonds in the rough are Ozzie's specialty. Draft targets for possession receivercould be Keenan Allen or Robert Woods, but are they NFL ready?
This is good for Q, because he goes to another class-act organization, a team who's success is set for years to come, and he keeps his $7.2M salary intact. Not ideal for the Ravens tho', but there are other possession WR candidates (maybe ) and if Joe demanded $120M worth of "respect" he's gonna have make Doss (or some other lesser WR) look like Boldin. Another possibility is that Pitta lines up in slot(?) more - Heap-style. |

Considering that Joe's deal is all of one week old, chances are it's structured the best way possible right now. Even if they managed to free up more cap space for this year (which would probably be less than 1M anyway), all they'd be doing is creating an even bigger cap hit down the line for Flacco. |
