ACC tourneyMarch 14, 2013 3:19 pm
I just hope that loss on Sunday didn't take everything out of this team. I could see them laying a complete (we don't care) kind of game here. Tonight's game is all on coaching! I'm hoping they come out and put Wake away in the first half. I don't see that happening but I do see a 10+ point win.
I see Maryland being a 3-4 seed in the NIT. Get a home game or two and see what happen. Believe it or not I think they will be happy playing in the NIT. It all start by winning tonight lol. Just keep winning and you never know what will happen. Wake 61 UMD 72 Go Terps! |

Well, part of me just wasn't done bashing yet lol. Here's Turg's comments on acc tourney:
Those comments just don't make sense to me. He seems a bit delusional. Much further along? Much further? Played well at Virginia and becoming a tougher team physically/mentally???? Played well at Virginia but just came up short? Huh??? huh X2? Considering the talent this team supposedly had, in some ways we went backwards mentally this year, with the undisciplined play we've rehashed a million times. The only difference this year was the duke win, duke without Kelly playing their worst game. I can barely count the NCST win because of the fluke tip-in. It's hard to hold back judgement when the same same dumb mistakes go uncorrected all year. You'd think with a full season gone by, that a lot of those things would get ironed out, but this year watching them actually made me angry at times...more so than any time since the 2002 year, even more mad than watching the Redskins all those years before RGIII got here, so you know that's pretty mad lol. Losing that VA game just put an appropriate exclamation point summing up the entire season, because it was just another one to find a way to lose, this time after a big lead. "Played well at Virginia but just came up short" is not the proper comment to make after that debacle. |

Almost sounds like he might be worried about his job security and he's trying to lobby for it. I agree, terpo, many of those comments appear delusional, as if he wasn't watching the same team we were all season long. I guess it's just a case of anything to rationalize his team blowing multiple 17-point leads on the road against a Virginia team that had been really struggling coming into last Sunday's game.
"Maybe lost a game or two we didn't expect to lose this year..."Gee, ya think that had anything to do with your in-game coaching strategy/decisions?!? You always hear the old sports cliche: "coaches putting their team in a position to win." I honestly can't think of one game this year where that was the case with Turgeon; the players won in spite of his input (or lack of) much of the time, imo. Worst management of timeouts I have ever seen. It's his prerogative to hold on to the low expectations that obviously came with him to College Park; but I agree, terpo: result-wise, there is very little difference b/t this season and last, especially when you consider the level of competition during the nonconference portion of the schedule. LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, MARYLAND! |

LOL!!! Well at least this game is entertaining from a comedic perspective. Did you see that when Dez Wells went to bounce the ball on the floor and just kicked it to the defender who was about 3 feet away from him. HAHA! How about when Faust tried to go all Magic Johnson and threw the ball into a crowd of Wake Forest defenders. Perhaps my favored though, when Dez went to pass the ball to a "rolling" guy, and he whiped it into the stanchion, with no Terp anywhere near it. LOL!
Looking forward to many more of these moments in the second half! What a pathetic team and season. I'm certainly critical of coach as well, but there are tons of times where there is just nothing a coach to do. It has to be hard not to just laugh at your players sometimes and try to stay positive, because this is just beyond words. Just lose this game............. this season needs to be over. |

1 pt game with 11 minutes left but I just don't see it tonight. WF is doing the solid reproducable things assisting on almost every hoop while we just again keep throwing it around. Plenty of time and might only take one good run, but it doesn't look immenent. one wf player with 4 fouls but Thomas and Harris are enough by themselves it looks like. Aronholdt just made a 3 so who knows but it doesnt feel comfident

ACC tourneyMarch 14, 2013 8:44 pm
its amazing how you can call this before it happens. three times tonight we get a steal, they get the ball to the middle, the guard refuses to dish to the open guy or pull up for a short jumper, misses the contested layup, then commits the foul. Now WF is drawing at least one foul every time down the court. Every time. somehow still hanging around.

ACC tourneyMarch 14, 2013 8:59 pm
Well if you are going to put on a run, the last 5 min is the time. had a chance to make it 10, blew the dunk and then commit the foul and wake comes right back and repays th favir with less than 4 min. Aronholt makes these and its 9 with less than 4 to go. A basket per minute lead is a good place to be. Unbelievably the terps are in control. Amazing what happens when you simply dont throw the ball away. Nope Aronhodt misses and the terps fouls again with WF in the double bonus. Len back in he game. here we go. |

needless to say it will take more than 10 good minutes against Duke but for now the Terps still have a chip and a chair in poker terms.

ACC tourneyMarch 14, 2013 9:06 pm
WF just gave up. it's over with a 10 pt lead and a minute nd a half. WF calls a TO and this is their coaches last chance to do something big. The terps just need to not throw the ball away and make FT. of course Duke awaits. Lunardi as of this moment still has the terps as next four out. This win could actually put MD back in the first four out. Such loss opportunity in the last two weeks. At least they made a strong bid for an NIT bid and had some success for these young players in post season.

You guys are awfully tough on a Coach without a point guard. Someone said this game was all about coaching, so...
does Coach T get the victory or do you guys see what you want to see? Or, will you rationalize why he had no impact on the win? Seems to me to be a no win situation for many of you. I happen to agree with his assessment of the team's performance this year. This program is headed in the right direction, and anyone who judges Turgeon, limited by players he inherited, is far too impatient and frustrated to do so fairly. You guys need to give it a rest...at least for another season. Where was the upside the last few seasons on GW? If you answer that question honestly, then all the "he can't coach" crap is just that...crap. |

ACC tourneyMarch 15, 2013 12:19 am
Moul huge upside on GW team just back in 2010. Just looking at a lot of these post game comments shows where he doesn't have a clue, and it's really disturbing. All the players are making the same bone-headed mistakes regardless of who recruited them. The same repeated, dumb, mistakes, a lot of which should be at least partially correctable by the end of a full season, not continue to get worse and lose games as a result. I mean, what are they watching in game film? Can you not obviously see how you are telegraphing passes and running/dribbling out of control half the time? Can these things not be corrected to some degree without constantly spilling over in to the next game?
Geez I might be an armchair QB, but this stuff is just so blatantly obvious it's sick. I mean to be 2nd in nation in rebounds and have a few key stats way better than most tournament teams, then blowing games because of stupidity. I agree with Skins that Wake just gave up or ran out of steam. We were making the same mistakes AGAIN to lost that game if they had gone on anything resembling a run. It's gonna be ugly against duke unless 75% of our shots "fall" lol. Im too tired but how many games this year did we have less turnovers than our opponent? And I mean the cupcakes too, same s$%%t. The only thing to check is these stats over at Texas A&M, and see what the parallels are.... |

ACC tourneyMarch 15, 2013 11:56 am
then all the "he can't coach" crap is just that...crap.No, what's crap is building 3 17-point leads in the first half and a 13-point halftime lead on the road against a struggling UVA team and then losing. What's crap is being 13-1, having just come off a blowout win in your first ACC game of the season and then blowing a 12-point lead on your homecourt to an average Fla St. team...the game that ultimately changed the entire direction of the season. So what, the Terps beat a sub -.500 Wake team for the 3rd time and now we should all have Turgeon's back and revere him as the next Coach K or Wooden?!? The first 30-35 minutes of the game were just more of the same with regard to undisciplined, careless mistakes. I can be patient and forgiving in Jan. while the young players are adjusting to the challenges of ACC play, but when the same stupid mistakes are being made game in, game out in late Feb & March, you have to lay the blame on the coaching staff as well. Coaching is all about communication and connecting with your kids, and obviously Turgeon's message hasn't gotten through yet. The Terps won last night because Dez Wells is really talented and almost single-handedly willed it and PeShon played tough D on Harris and came through with some surprisingly nice plays on the offensive end in the 2nd half. So maybe we don't have a "true" PG, and maybe PeShon & Faust regressed more than anyone expected and Len isn't the dominant big man all the "experts" claimed he was during the preseason hype fest. All of them have shown signs of potential at one time or another; it takes a talented coach to draw the talent and confidence out of his/her players and correct the mistakes when they're struggling. Friedgen inherited a bunch of players from Vanderlinden that he didn't recruit and wasn't initially familiar with and won an ACC championship with them in his first year at the helm. His task was even more daunting, imo; the Fridge had to rebuild a gridiron program that had only one winning season and no bowl game appearances in 11 years! Proof that quick turnarounds can be had with the hand you're dealt. No doubt Turgeon enjoyed a solid track record at Wichita St. & Texas A&M (I'm sure he didn't complain about the players he inherited from Gillispie) but for all of the years he's been a head coach, he has a total of 7 postseason wins in 8 appearances, no conference tourney championships and only one regular season conference championship. Again, very solid, but not the type of record that instills a deep confidence in his ability to bring the MD program back to prominence. Things APPEAR to be improving on the recruiting front since Gary "retired", but what good is a bunch of supposed blue chip talent if the coaches can't help the kids realize their potential and the players don't buy into the system?!? Maybe some of us are being too impatient and a bit premature with our criticism, but it's not as if we started watching/analyzing college hoops yesterday. 3 years seems to be the timeframe for rebuilding tolerance at power conference schools these days; I firmly believe that's all Turgeon is going to get if the Terps fail to make the Tourney again next season. Who knows, maybe he'll push all the right buttons this weekend and guide the Terps to the ACC Tourney Finals and a berth to the Big Dance. I've always appreciated your even-handed, reasoned, diplomatic approach to posting, Mouly. As we all are, you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I couldn't disagree more with your stance this time around. LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, MARYLAND! |

NC ST whuppin VA as I thought. BEatin a dead horse again, but of all the Turg quotes I put there, the one that got me the most was " " "maybe we lost a game or two we shoulda won" something to that effect. Key stuff...first, the word "maybe"....maybe? How about for sure..yeah. Then a game or two? How about 4 or 5 ? but at minimum it's 3: both FL ST games and the 2nd VA game. Some might say the GT/BC road games, but those 2 games we got outplayed/out hustled, and that I can deal with..sorta.
Those other 3 woulda made 11-7 acc, and probably in. I really bought in to what Turg was sayin last year, but this year his commentary has switched to undecisive, unsure "I don't know the answers or don't have any answers" type of thing, it wasn't our day, shots not falling whatever. In NIT, since nobody really cares about it anyway, Turg should just lay down the law and say he's gonna play those that do what he says, and bench those that keep making the same mistakes, even if it means a 1st round exit. That might actually "teach" these guys more than winning a few games while still doing all that dumb stuff. Winning while doing dumb stuff just reinforces the idea that you can get away with it and still win. We don't have anyone with that great a skill set, not even Wells. GV was the last guy that could take over a game, and was cut slack. Stoglin tried, failed. Dez might still be that guy next year or so. |

Weird well at least on Lunardi's analysis we're the last of the last....2nd four out, and the last of that bunch lol. Who knows but I think the wake win gets us in NIT for sure. Win today by some freak occurance and it's back solidly in the discussion.

Please man, no. Ain't gonna happen. Duke by like 20. Let's be realistic. UNLESS...something weird happens, like we shoot 65% and have 5 turnovers total, and Turg goes nuts and gets 3 technical fouls and the whole team goes nuts and whatever. I expect plumlee amd Kelly to royally "BF" Len. We'll see humanoids. |
