Major League Baseball adopted the tradition of the Home Run Derby during the 1985 All-Star Game. From 1985 to 1990, the derby lasted two innings, with each player getting five outs per inning. The contest switched to the current three-round format in 1991 in which eight to 10 players attempt to hit as many home runs before reaching 10 outs in each round.
