Tigers scratch Avila with right forearm soreness

DETROIT -- Already down three games to none in the World Series, the Tigers had to scratch catcher Alex Avila from their Game 4 lineup because of right forearm soreness.

Gerald Laird will take Avila's spot in the lineup.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Avila might be able to catch in an emergency, but probably couldn't pinch hit. Leyland said it's possible the Tigers could make a roster move if the series continues.

"Alex is very tough, without question, one of the toughest I've ever managed," Leyland said. "If it's hurting, it's hurting."

Leyland said Avila got hit with a foul tip.

Avila has one hit in seven at-bats in the World Series. Laird is 0 for 3.
