Vladimir Guerrero impressive in workout, but unlikely to land in Arizona
Although a source tells CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman that Vladimir Guerrero looked good in a workout with the Diamondbacks on Monday, it's unlikely Arizona will sign the 37-year-old because of the team's outfield depth.Junior Noboa, Arizona's vice president for Latin operations, told the Associated Press that Guerrero appeared to be in good enough shape to play the outfield, but not every day. Guerrero didn't play in the outfield last season in Baltimore and played in just 20 regular-season games in the field over the last three seasons. He also played in the field in the 2010 World Series with poor results.
With Hideki Matsui signing with the Rays and Johnny Damon back with the Indians, it's hardly a stretch to think Guerrero could play again, but there doesn't seem to be too many places where he fits at this point. Guerrero was an All-Star in 2010 and finished 11th in MVP voting, but still had a hard time finding a job in 2011. He eventually ended up in Baltimore, where he hit .290/.317/.416 with 13 home runs in 146 games. In parts of 16 seasons, Guerrero is a .318/.379/.553 hitter with 449 home runs and 2,590 hits.
