Orioles pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada to undergo Tommy John surgery

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer
Orioles pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada will have Tommy John surgery May 11 in Los Angeles, the team announced Wednesday. For the past few days, this announcement has seemingly been a formality, Wada just had to give the go-ahead. And he now evidently has.

Wada, a 31-year-old left-handed import from Japan, was shut down in spring training with elbow inflammation and then again shut down after one rehab appearance in Triple-A -- where he was shelled (six hits, six earned runs in 2 2/3 innings).

The Orioles signed Wada to a two-year, $8.14 million contract this past offseason. Considering he's going to miss all of the 2012 season and possibly a decent part of 2013, there's a good possibility that salary is already a sunk cost.
