The O'Malley family, the clan that owned the Dodgers for generations, has won the bidding for the San Diego Padres, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports. CBSSports.com's Scott Miller first reported that the O'Malleys were emerging as the favorites.
The O'Malleys will pay $800 million to buy the team from outgoing owner John Moores. The sale price includes $200 million for the team's stake in FOXSports San Diego.
The new ownership group includes four grandchildren of Walter O'Malley, the Dodger owner who relocated the team from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958, and professional golfer Phil Mickelson. Moores has owned the Padres since 1994; the O'Malley family sold the Dodgers in 1998.
