Cal Ripken Jr.'s mother safe after abduction at gunpoint

The mother of Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr., Violet Roberta Ripken, has been found after she was reported missing on Tuesday night.

Ripken, 74, was abducted at gunpoint, CBS Baltimore reports. According to Aberdeen police, Ripken was abducted between 7 and 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Police got a tip Tuesday night and found Ripken in her car.

The family released a statement on Wednesday:

"As you now know, our mother was abducted at gunpoint from her home yesterday morning. This has been a very trying time for our family, but we are grateful and relieved that mom is back with us, safe and healthy. We want to thank everyone for their tremendous support, especially all of the law enforcement agencies that worked so hard and quickly. This is an ongoing investigation, so we hope everyone understands that we cannot comment further at this time. Thank you."

Ripken is the widow of former Orioles manager Cal Ripken Sr., and mother of Cal Ripken Jr. and former Orioles second baseman Billy Ripken.

According to WBALTV.com, a man tied Ripken up in the back seat of her car and drove away. Acccording to the report, a citizen saw Ripken and the abductor told that person his mom was sick and he was taking her to the hospital. That citizen then called police. The same report says Ripken was found tied up and blindfolded in the back seat of her car.

Paramedics attended to Ripken when she was found and she was unhurt, according to the report.
