Shelby Miller, one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball, in on the verge of being called up. Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals will soon summon Miller from Triple-A Memphis now that the major-league rosters have expanded.
While Miller is not likely to receive a start down the stretch, he should, Strauss notes, receive a few low-leverage relief apperances this month.
Miller, age 21, entered the season as the fifth-ranked propect in all of baseball, according to Matt's composite rankings. Miller struggled badly early in the season, but some mechanical changes and, to hear Miller himself tell it, an improved attitude led to better results. Much better results: a 2.88 ERA and 70 strikeouts against just seven walks in 59 1/3 innings since the All-Star break.
He could play a semi-important role in a Cardinal bullpen that's been worked pretty hard of late.
