Despite the good news on Thursday regarding A's pitcher Brandon McCarthy, Oakland trainer Nick Paparesta said McCarthy is "absolutely" in a life-threatening situation, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Slusser gave an update on Twitter, here's a compilation of her Tweets:

McCarthy underwent emergency surgery on Wednesday after suffering an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture as the result of being hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Erick Aybar. McCarthy walked off the field under his own power before being taken to a local hospital for a CT scan. That test revealed the severity of his injury.
