Jason Giambi, of course, lost out to Walt Weiss in his bid to become the next Rockies manager. However, as Troy Renck of The Denver Post reports, the Rockies hope Giambi will agree to become their next hitting coach.

"We consider him a Rockie, we hope this is the spot he will consider," GM Dan O'Dowd told Renck. "He was very impressive in his interview for the manager's job."

Giambi has previously indicated his interest in returning to the Rockies in his pinch-hitting role, but the team doesn't appear to be inclined to go in that direction.

As for his hitting-coach chops, Giambi the player certainly knew how to command the strike zone and hit for power -- the two best things a hitter can do at the plate. Perhaps he can impart those lessons, as Mark McGwire has done in St. Louis and, starting next season, Los Angeles.
