Diamondbacks, Aaron Hill agree to three-year, $35 million extension

The Diamondbacks and second baseman Aaron Hill have finalized a three-year contract extension worth approximately $35 million, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com has confirmed. ESPN's Buster Olney first reported the deal. The team intends to announce the agreement later Friday.

Hill, 30, was scheduled to earn $5.5 million this year as part of the two-year pact he signed with the Diamondbacks last offseason. The new extension will be tacked on to his current contract, so Hill is now signed through 2016 for a total of $40.5 million. Arizona signed Martin Prado to a four-year, $40 million extension last week.

Hill came to the Diamondbacks with utility man John McDonald in an August 2011 trade that sent Kelly Johnson to the Blue Jays. He had the best season of his career in 2012, hitting .302/.360/.522 (131 OPS+) with 26 home runs and 14 stolen bases in 668 plate appearances. The performance earned him some MVP votes.
