Great stuff from Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, as he gets Rangers DH Lance Berkman talking about the 2011 World Series, in which the Cardinals -- including Berkman -- beat those Rangers in heartbreaking fashion.
The jumping-off point for Berkman was a question about why, aside from his mending knee, he sat out Tuesday's intrasquad contest. His response:
"I don't want one of these guys to hit me over 2011. There still might be a little animosity, so I don't want to give [the pitchers] an open shot at me."
That's pretty good, but then the topic shifts to manager Ron Washington and how he referenced Berkman's having endured the baseball "war." Mr. Berkman, your response?
"He [Washington] forgot about me and then he was like, 'Berkman has been through the war too.' And I was like, 'Yeah, we won that war.' "
Giving your manager a second-hand ribbing about beating him in the World Series is bold enough, but referring to your former team as "we" might possibly rankle a few current Rangers, including Washington.
Somewhere in Florida, Michael Young sensed a disturbance in the force.
