Spring training injury update: Hughes, Castro, more
RELATED: 2013 spring training | Monday scoreboard
Another day of spring training action, another day of small injury updates. Let's dive in.
- Angels: Left-handed reliever Sean Burnett threw a bullpen session on Sunday and on Monday reported that he feels "fine" in recovering from his back issue. He has one more bullpen session before he'll see game action. (Jeff Fletcher via Twitter)
- Athletics: Infielder Scott Sizemore learned X-rays on his bruised left hand came back negative, so he's only out a few days (MLB.com). He missed all of last season after suffering a torn ACL in the spring, so the results here had to come with an extra jolt of relief.
- Cardinals: Allen Craig is dealing with a sore shoulder but had resumed throwing "a few days ago." (MLB.com via Twitter) Also, David Freese was removed from Monday's game after falling into the stands in pursuit of a foul ball, but the club announced it was merely a precautionary measure.
- Cubs: Starlin Castro will be held out of action until Saturday, as he's still nursing a hamstring injury that he suffered last week. If it seems like this is an extended absence, it's because the Cubs see no reason to rush their star, given that opening day is still almost a month away. (MLB.com)
- Giants: Tim Lincecum has a blister on the middle finger of his right hand, but he's not far away from action as he's "working toward" starting a game on Thursday. (Henry Schulman via Twitter)
- Indians: Relief pitcher Joe Smith, recovering from a left abdominal strain, is scheduled to pitch an inning in a Cactus League game on Tuesday. (MLB.com via Twitter)
- Mariners: Pitching prospect Danny Hultzen left his start on Monday with a hip strain, but he says he's not worried about it and the club insists it was being "overly cautious" in the removal of Hultzen. (Seattle Times)
- Phillies: Delmon Young is in the "225 to 228" pound range and could be cleared to begin running Tuesday, reports Ken Rosenthal. Remember, there are weight clauses in Young's contract. He must be below 230 in each of his first three weigh-ins, which will occur when the Phillies so choose.
- Rays: Designated hitter Luke Scott has leg tightness but says nothing has been pulled and he won't be out long. (Tampa Bay Times via Twitter)
- White Sox: Reliever Jesse Crain is out of the World Baseball Classic due to a strained right hip adductor. (MLB.com via Twitter)
- Yankees: Injured starter Phil Hughes continues to work back from a bulging disk in his back. On Monday, for the second consecutive day, Hughes went through a throwing session without any discomfort. He also noted he has been pain free for five days. (Nypost.com Yankees blog)
