Yankees place Brett Gardner on DL

Brett Gardner

Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, who's off to a strong start this season (in addition to being one of the best defensive outfielders on the planet) is headed to the DL with elbow pain, the team has announced.

Gardner, who wasn't in the lineup on Wednesday underwent an MRI, which revealed a strain and bone bruise of his right elbow. The good news is that it's not Gardner's throwing arm.

To replace Gardner on the active roster, the Yankees have called up recalled right-hander Cody Eppley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Gardner boasts a .424 OBP on the young season, and in 2011 he saved a whopping 25 or so runs with his glove. Needless to say, he'll be missed. Andruw Jones will likely see most of the playing time in left during Gardner's absence.
