Blue Jays tab prospect Drew Hutchison as new fifth starter

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer
The Blue Jays have settled on their new fifth starting pitcher, and it's young Drew Hutchison.

Due to how the schedule shook out, the Jays have been able to stick with four pitchers for the most part, as it's been Ricky Romero, Brandon Morrow, Henderson Alvarez and Kyle Drabek since the third game of the season. But Saturday they'll need someone other than those four, and Jays beat reporter Shi Davidi reports that it's Hutchison.

Hutchison, 21, is a 6-foot-2 right hander. He was the Blue Jays' 15th rounder back in 2009, but he's impressed in his time with the organization. Last season, he started in Low-A ball and climbed to Double-A, where he excelled in three starts. This season, he's 2-1 with a 2.16 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 12 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings for Double-A New Hampshire.

This past spring, Hutchison had a 3.00 ERA in 15 innings.
